@@madgecko11 here we have it, someone with an emotionally charged opinion…and someone who has had to call the police and wait with bleeding victims on the sidewalk in Chicago…. “Gibbon”
"Die further away" Is literally most cities in the US's plan for dealing with homelessness. Rather than addressing systemic issues, cities try to drive homeless away to be someone else's problem. And since cities are effectively strategic players, most cities act this way to avoid the externality of homeless migrating to their own.
It's not just a US problem. Here in my country the local slum areas would occasionally erupt in flames as the local government try to drive the poor out. They usually do it when the actual owners of the land -- rich people -- wanna build a mall or condo over it. Cities promise the stars to people from rural areas, and then chew and spit them out for not having been born with enough money to rent a tiny studio apartment.
their mentality is some bastardized mix of "if you cant beat em, join em" and "fight fire with fire" if we cant handle our own homelessness issue, we'll push em away just like everyone else s i n c e they didnt get any worthwhile amount of backlash for it, or pushback before it went through
@@binglemccringle705 I think at the very core of it, and it might be a bit cyclical, is this ostracization, or sense of 'otherness' most modern societies have cultivated for the poor. I feel like if we truly respected our wounded refuse as fellow citizens, politicians would be held accountable.
Instead of building a couple of tall cheap apartment blocks and setting up a help center for homeless to get back on track or to deal with addiction, they do this crap. Incredible. I remember a guy who built mini "houses" for them, kinda like clean looking proper wooden sheds really. And the city spent lots of money tearing them down and fighting him.
I remember a while ago, maybe two or three years ago one of the nearby cities had built really low rent buildings (with rent forgiveness) for the young homeless populations
As I recall the mayor was about to release his plan for dealing with the homeless and his photo opportunity would have been ruined if some rando already fixed the problem by just building them small little shacks they could live in. They confiscated and destroyed the tiny houses claiming that they posed a health and safety risk to the people living in them, and then kicked them back out onto the street to sleep in cardboard boxes and tents.
As an American I absolutely love watching these videos seeing the perspective of someone not living in America. Really makes me feel my confusion on the insanity of America isn't unwarranted. Lol
It makes me feel brain-broken when I hear well-adjusted humans from another country. America is such an embarrassment and I’m ashamed to be a natural-born citizen for a multitude of reasons. Disgusting. This country should be balkanized
Except I live in la where the homeless are a big part of the drug problem, unemployment is crazy high. Almost every business is hiring but they get assistance that pays for their drug use. Not to mention these people throw stuff like glass at cars and block every place possible so people can’t walk safely
The most unrealistic part of this video is at 8:51 where he uses centimeters. An American would use literally ANY other unit of measurement for inspection. Preferably football fields.

Recently laws have changed in LA where if homeless communities are within a certain radius of “public spaces” cops are allowed to tear them apart and use violence to get rid of them. And a reminder that this is an issue because most homeless shelters and mental institutions were shut down by the government because they weren’t “profitable”… I live in LA and I’ve seen a lot of dystopian shit.
same up here in Anchorage, AK. public parks usually were the only places people could, y'know, exist homelessly, without paying, have access to porta potties and cheap food from street vendors, and generally these were downtown - close to the shelter and various services. The problem isn't that they live in relative comfort on the street. The problem is that they aren't making someone else richer by paying rent on while living on the street

The lack of public restrooms is a serious issue. People are pooping/peeing in the streets witch is cosigning all kinds of health risks. it's not that hard to put in more public restrooms, LA has the money they just don't care. Every time I'm in LA it's so upsetting seeing those people on the streets surrounded by people with more money then they know what to do with.
look how dystopian the world has become, we are complaining when people are living normally, except without a white picket fence, and not paying the government
The mentalities toward unhoused people in LA are truly some of the nastiest I've ever seen. I follow a lot of for-and-by unhoused people and their neighbours organisations there, and it's truly disgusting how the rich talk about them. Like, there's shitty classism everywhere, but I've always been poor and I've lived in Detroit my entire life and the income disparity is largely outside the city vs inside the city (w the exception of Downtown), whereas LA is a huge gap between extremely wealthy people and unhoused or otherwise extremely impoverished people, with like, seemingly no middle class, and there really is this horrific, sadistic, emotionless, inhuman view of unhoused and impoverished people, I've heard people say such disgusting things without blinking, the LAPD was caught on recording joking about bombing an encampment, and it's only going to get worse with the Olympics displacements amping up, the LAPD is intentionally destroying safer shelters that organisations are building, the local government has been intentionally removing access from public restrooms and creating intentionally unsafe warming and cooling centers for the unhoused throughout the pandemic, there's "special enforcement zones" around shelters where unhoused people are additionally terrorised to make the city look better, etc, and generally speaking so many of the people who live there just support it. Unhoused people are treated worse than feral animals, like, so many people in LA genuinely view these real, living human beings, these families and struggling individuals dealing with a really shitty situation in the best way they possibly can, like pests, and it's something I've never seen before, from police and government and people in rich neighbourhoods yeah but not from peoples' direct neighbours, the mentality among much of rich LA residents is genuinely that these people should just die and stop being "in the way," with no actual regard for what's going on or basic human decency. I just can't express how viscerally, horrifyingly sad it is that capitalism has made us more worried about someone "illegally" acquiring electricity and water and housing, than someone having to illegally acquire electricity and water and housing.
There's a reason why LA has one of the worst reputations in the civilised world. Although I've got to say UK cities aren't great either, I've seen homeless people get beaten, robbed and pissed on by groups of drunk "lads" in the streets of Manchester and London. Many of them freeze to death during the winter because of how cold it gets too.
Don't blame capatalism for LA. The LA government destroys better housing opportunities for the homeless, by people who actually give a shit. That's not capitalism, thats the city's rank.

A few months ago I read book called "caliban and the witch", and it talked about how people in Europe used to just build their houses anywhere, hunt and fish and basically obtain everything needed for their existence in communal lands. But then private property of land became a thing, and the new "owners" of the land would tear down and burn the houses of the people living there if they didn't pay or work for the lords to obtain the right to exist as a human being in that space. But there was a huge resistance at first, because it was new and people weren't used to that arrangement, so they saw it for what it really is: the "owners" of the land are enslaving you, just with this new justification that it is not you what they own, but the land you exist in. It all sounds so barbaric and it happened like 1500 years ago, but you look at this and you're reminded that we live in exactly the same regimen.

Some people coming from countries that haven't experienced communism have romantic image of it. Coming from post communist country I can say communism is not a good thing! Trust me, don't fall for "we are all equal" slogans and such, it's a utopian trap. Communism wants to organize your life for your own money. THEY know what's best for you. I don't wish you to go what we went through, dark times when only thing you could buy in store for sure was vinegar. When you somehow got a pack o toilet paper you would walk home with it proudly like a peacock, so everybody could see what luxuries you have. Real times of absurdity, I tell you that. If you want to see communist reality (in a crooked mirror, but still very true) watch movie "Mis" by Stanislaw Bareja, best comedy ever, although I don't know how much of it you would actually get. As an American, I couldn't agree with you two more, you have it 100% correct. Most people in America believe the narrative they're told and they treat people that are different from them as inhuman.
Hearing the news anchor say the streets have gone "unchecked" and then proceeds to list basic things that help keep the homeless alive is pretty chilling
The reason there's an American flag is because a large portion of veterans become homeless because they are often underqualified or too injured for all other jobs. The American military complex doesnt give any sort of pension etc. and they dont get aid with PTSD/their need for adrenaline after leaving the military. One of the main tenants of soldier training is patriotism, so it never really leaves them, even when they country they were told they are defending fails them.

12:48 is what broke me "Imagine someone in a wheelchair trying to go down the sidewalk" As an American I know that nobody uses the sidewalks to actually walk since everything is built for cars and you can't walk (or wheelchair in this case) anywhere in a reasonable time.
It’s honesty disgusting to see how people view this issue. Using excuses like “homeless people want to be homeless” (which is just flat out wrong and the worst of the propaganda) or worse “they will never work a real job anyway” Like how tf are you supposed to have a job if you don’t even have an alarm clock can’t clean yourself and you have no idea if you’ll be able to sleep in the same place every day. People also like to say that “homelessness only exists in California” while in other states the homeless population is less visible only because those who become homeless eventually die or end up in the US prison system. If we gave these people free housing running water and food they would have a greater chance of becoming self sustaining. Not only that it would remove the need for homeless encampments at all, so snobby assholes don’t have to cry about “having to see people suffering in muh neighborhood” It’s astounding how little compassion the average person has towards those who are literally struggling to survive. Like can you imagine having to live on the sidewalk, having to beg for money from others, being helplessly addicted to a drug that may or may not ease the pain and knowing there is no chance at getting help? Not only that, having to live in fear that one day, the police will raid the place you live, take all of your belongings, and throw you in jail where withdrawals from the drug you depend on might literally end your life.

And after two customers complained about him being there, my manager asked me if i could go wake him up and ask him to move, i really didnt want to make him move cause he wasn't doing anything. So i go out give him a nudge and felt that he was ice cold. Which startled me, so i went to check his pulse, and well, he was dead. I go back in to notify her the the man was dead, and i was going to call 911 to well. deal with him, but my manager, upon me telling her he was dead, in the most karen bullshit voice, "god why couldn't that loser fucking die somewhere else". Which totally caught me off guard cause she was genuinely a good boss and seemed to be a decent person, unless you're homeless then to her you're no longer a human. i ask if shes being serious since that's a human being right there."hardly a person, one less loser coming in here asking for free shit". I had never seen the guy before and i knew most of the homeless crowd since id give cigarettes to anyone that asked. I lost my shit right as the other closing drive came in. he is like wtf is going one so i explain. he looks at the homeless guy and back over to her "fuck you bitch i quit" and i thought that was a great idea, so i also let her know i was fucking done here as well and she can shove the 2 week notice right up her ass "well you guys need to finish out your shifts, there's no way i can do all these dishes by myself, since our cook has to leave in 15 minutes as well". our cook was a 15 year old girl, her first job and it was nearly the time where she was legally no longer allowed to work. so she chimed in she was done as well which i gave her mad props for. so all three of us leave and stand out front waiting for paramedics to arrive. my manager comes back out demanding we get back in there. i tell her hey you're right i should get back in there, walk back inside and clocked out. this sent her up the fucking wall. and to this day brings a smile to my face. a few days later i got a call from none other than the owner of our store, explaining that he knew what went down(our store had audio and video recording stuff throughout the store), he had terminated her and was wondering if i would like come back, no repercussions for walking out on my shift. i thanked him for doing the right thing and firing that lady but i was no longer interested. he wished me best of luck and hung up. Fuck some people, but having zero respect for someone who died cold and alone in front of a pizza place is beyond sick to me.

Almost got into a yelling fight with a coworker bc I said that at least *one* of the parks should allow permanent tents for the homeless. Literally just don’t tear them down. The part of me that’s trying to figure out how this could go wrong is like “well what if one guy was extorting people and making them pay to be in the area” then I remembered that’s just my reality.
My province has laws that a city must permit temporary shelters somewhere on its public park spaces. The city has allocated the river banks - not the worst for the summers, but it's effective at shoving people to the side.

Brazil is where it is, because "the poor" were going to Disney. Of course, our bourgeoisie could not allow this kind of nonsense, now here we are :) (help)
@@righthomosphere7962 There's a difference between taking someone's only place of residence and taking someone's holiday home lmao, don't even try to make that comparison. And anyways, the government could forcefully buy those homes from rich people for a reduced price, and then put homeless people in them, if you're so desperate for rich people to get some kind of compensation.
There was a older man in the rural part of where I live, who was living in a wooden shack, clearly malnourished with two children who were wearing school uniforms when it was term holidays, yet someone said if he’s so poor, why does he have a tv satellite dish on his house? They disregard everything else yet zero in on that one piece of “luxury”. It probably doesn’t even work anymore Luckily the welfare services here were notified and they will be receiving financial and housing assistance.
Can you two do an episode on how long you can remain homeless, and how long you can remain homeless without breaking any rules? Or looking for a job? I commuted through homeless encampment for work and lived next door to one. It's never a dull moment.
Yeah it would be a great idea to respond to the statement “if you’re homeless pull yourself up by the bootstraps and find a job to work your way up to housing” because in America you need an address and phone number to even apply
Omg I literally just mentioned your channel to someone earlier today raving about how awesome your content is but that you never post. I hope this is a sign of more to come? :D
Imagine leaving in a city without proper squares and parks and the whole city is made up of roads only, so the sidewalks is the thing that is considered where “the public” happens… Oh yeah, welcome to south western USA
I'm homeless in Australia. Physically disabled. Mentally unwell. Living in a Prado, in random car parks. It's illegal to sleep in your car, risking $100 fine. Eating breakfast by the beach right now. About to have a cold beach shower. Luxury 😂
Im really glad you guy’s are keeping this amazing project alive, this channel and the work you put into it is GOLD and it’s greatly appreciated. Thank you.
You joked about them clearing homeless encampments with a bulldozer, but that is basically standard practice. I live near a canal between a lake and the sea, and in order to get some privacy homeless people regularly set up in the tree line by the canal. Then one day fliers were posted saying basically "There will be a raid tomorrow" and sure enough, the next day city cleanup workers and cops showed up. They arrested everyone who didn't want to leave, took everything, threw away most of it, and a bunch of tents ended up going into the canal.
It's actually wild how horrible most people are in the US. My father set up a nonprofit organization to build tiny homes, and it worked great after much much much fighting the city government temporarily homed 300 people and got over 100 permeant housing and lives back together in less then one year. Then all of a sudden my father was being taken to jail, and has spent 5 YEARS in court fighting charges of embezzlement when he lives off of a 900 dollar a month disability check and ntm was fighting throat cancer lol. AND get this they local government placed their people in charge of the non profit which now has a yearly budget of 3 MILLION dollars (vs the 150,000 that was donated and was almost wholly used for the homeless before they were in charge). And they have done NOTHING to help the people because 90% of the 3 million goes to admin costs and only a HANDFUL of new tiny homes have been built and NO permeant housing has been found through the "non" profit since. The reason homelessness isn't solved in American cities is because the local governments make MILLIONS sometimes BILLIONS of dollars through funding for their contracted "non" profits. And anyone who try's to run an actual NON profit is swiftly taken to jail or brought up on charges so the pot isn't stirred
the irony of the news talking about how things are illegal while these people are just trying to survive is crazy. like, thats the least of the problems here, the danger of it is an issue as was mentioned, as well as it not even being luxurious at all. having to tap into these public resources sounds like a nightmare to do, but theyre left with little to no choice, its pretty much the only option.
I can't believe the nerve of these "homeless" people. Not having houses and intentionally taking up public space just to try and eek out a meager living for themselves in an otherwise unbelievably wealthy area? The shame.
