Seems like his father was very controlling in his childhood. Not necessarily abusive, but perhaps his father just wanted Home to have the best life he could have. But just didn't want to step back and let his son figure it out. It's a very common problem in family.

The other heart breaking thing said to House came from his mother. "You are perfect just the way you are." House is miserable, in pain and slowly becoming addicted to the drugs he needs to manage his pain. He knows he's not perfect because he could be better. It's not validation House needed from his parents. It was acceptance of the man they helped him grow up to be, that he resents. So an apology would be overdue but pave the way to a mutual loving respect instead of unconditional love that everyone knows has conditions attached.

The father was a soldier. Military parents tend to desensitivize their children and treat their family as a prolongation of their work. He probably repressed House to a breaking point, and when he started living alone he overcompensated all the years of military treatment

2 years late but it is revealed in another episode with a victim patient that House explains his father used to abuse him in some ways such as making him bath outside and such, if I remember the episode, his father was very strict and cold towards him.

why does his life suck? I havent watched the series but Im planning to when I have the time. From these compilations it seems like his only problem is exactly what his father is telling him. Other than his leg every problem he has is caused by him

@@nemdenemam9753 Living with pain so severe, you need Vicodin to manage it is absolutely life altering. Physical pain also takes a toll on mental and emotional health.

@@167thSpartan there was an episode where his pain got worse and asked Cuddy for help. She gave him placebo and the pain went away. Maybe its different in later seasons but so far it seems he is just an addict who was an addict before the accident too

@@nemdenemam9753 You are absolutely wrong, he didn't take Vicodin before the leg accident cause he didn't NEED TO. He was an ass before the leg, he was probably not a very cheerful guy but leg pain and subsequent Vicoddin dependance and everything else that happened made it 1000000 times worse. To write comments and form opinions you MUST watch series otherwise your opinion is invalid and just plain wrong.

But in the story about his leg in the lecture he called himself a junkie (off course he was intentionally misleading in everything else but he was misleading in things that were not medically relevant). There is also an episode where he admits he is an addict at the end of a bet. There is another where Cuddy's placebo treatment makes the pain go away. That episode ends with him looking at the pills heavily thinking and deciding to take the pill. His Vicoddin dependance came after the accident but his substance dependance didnt as far as I understand. Unless in later seasons it turns out different. But looking at his wiki page it doesnt seem like it. Although there is a mention of childhood trauma so maybe its not fair to say its all his fault so maybe there is still some levels to it. Still I believe so far that the leg injury is used as an alibi to just get worse. But maybe I should just stop right here and say you are right before I read more spoilers. I originally commented looking for answers for why the commenter considered his life suckage as I didnt plan on watching the series. Obviously I changed that foolish state of mind

For the longest time fans were clammoring for either Rowan Atkinson or Stephen Fry to do a guest shot on House. Maybe even become a recurring character for a couple of episodes and have them be just that. Or instead be another doctor that House knew at school but was even more brilliant than House. Shame it never happened.

It would've made it too similar to a medical Elementary or Sherlock.

He is pretty lucky too. He has a great mind, better than most people's. He's working in a place where he can treat people like crap and he'll never get fired. He's got his own team of minions who'll do pretty much anything he asks of them. Even though he's the leader of a department of medicine, his workload is pretty much non-existent and flexible. His only real problem is his leg pain, which he brough upon himself. His vicodin addiction is just another complication he's forcing upon himself because he refuses to face life like an adult.

He did bring the pain upon himself, he was the one who came up with the surgery for his muscle death that would keep his leg but leave him with chronic leg pain. Of course, it wasn't his fault that he had muscle death to begin with. About experiencing agony, I don't think I could compare any pain I've ever suffered to what House's character goes through, but it is shown later on that it is manageable without vicodin. It's true that he started taking vicodin for the pain, but he kept taking it instead of an alternative because he became an addict, the same way that a stressed-out person smokes weed. It's not because of the pain, it's because he feels unable to face his fears on his own. In the end House is a great character, but he's not devoid of flaws, that's what makes it better. His vicodin addiction and his self-pity are definitely two defining flaws of his, and we're shown time and again that there are better alternatives, he just doesn't take them.

I think it was less that, as Wilson has lied before, and more that House felt moderately betrayed. His relationship with his parents (mostly his father) is so bad he wants avoid them at all costs, but still values them, and Wilson didn't help him accomplish those goals.

It makes sense, considering House's dad was written to be a former Marine pilot.

Oumaima Samir yeah i kinda got that vibe.The dad is a bit demanding rude and authourative and the mom is just in a happy place . Thanks to the great acting of the characters we see their emotions. To me house was trying to not be rude and politely refuse them the chance to catch up because probably an awful past with the father. We didnt saw any greetings between him and his dad that means the have little hate and disagreement towards eachother. Houses politeness was shown by him not being condencending or sarcastic at all.

Your explanation is fine, It just doesn't fit genetically speaking. We either share personality traits with our parents, or resent them enough to develop defense mechanisms against them. So his sarcasm and disregard for rules can come from an overly strict dad, but where did his intellect and capacity to think logically came from? Obviously not his mom, since she's self deluded, and not his dad, since unconventional thinking is a bad trait for the military (not saying they're dumb, just that order and obedience is valued higher than thinking outside the box). (Personal rant below) I mean in my case, my dad, an engineer, is a fucking genius at doing business. I don't know how, but when it comes to making money, he's constantly coming up with ideas. He has little regard for rules, and gave me licence to screw up, because I'd learn from it. He's a fucking good dad for me, maybe terrible for someone with less self control. Our current relationship is more like close business partners and friends than father and son, since we've got a few enterprises together. If I ever kill a hooker, I know who I'm calling. My mom, a therapist, on the other side, is a complete sociopath. On the outside she's the most charming woman you'll ever meet, but only because she knows how to control and manipulate everyone. And I was her pet project. She always found ways to take away anything that made me happy in order to set the bar higher, but she never valued any of my accomplishments (I've got 2 fucking Doctorates ffs), and that made me learn how to lie, deceive, persuade, be my own rock, and never look for validation from anyone. So in a way, I became a persuasive sociopath who's good at business and doesn't give a fuck about what people think. That's a dangerous combo.
