What happens when you take a mad-genius creator of DIY electronic instruments, a vintage synth virtuoso and a music-tech maven, and get them to play together for the first time? Curious to find out, Patreon has assembled the all-star team of Look Mum no Computer, Cuckoo and Hainbach in a brand new supergroup: UNCOMPRESSED. With a debut show at Barcelona’s Sónar Festival fast approaching, Patreon followed the trio to LMNC’s museum of electronic esoterica on the British seaside, to document their first rehearsal against a backdrop of furby organs, antique electronics and enough oscillators to cause an earthquake.

I’m just going to embarrass myself here and say I had no idea who these people were and when I clicked on the video I thought it was a mockumentary , Like an electronic version of Spinal Tap. I thought these were actors. It was so awesome and over-the-top. But then I started reading the comments and thought, “wait a minute is this for real?“. So to discover that these people are real and are really like this and that this is an actual thing happening and to be able to go down the rabbit hole of discovering them has filled my world with joy. Makes me think of many nights in Berlin and discovering crazy fringe creatives doing the most awesome things. Sometimes this world can be so cool in the midst of all of the awful mess

They are the new Monkeys except they've always played they're own instruments, except in cases where they prepare their instruments to play themselves. And they're more like the three Enos, except they don't wear lots of feathers and makeup...

The Avengers is spot on. What a killer trio. Positively giddy seeing even just this one video. Definitely the pick-me-up I needed after Vangelis’ passing last week. Didn’t hurt learning that Cuckoo is a fellow synthesist of Greek descent either.

Back in 77, I saw the Chris Swansen Trio. It was a group of synthesists with each member having a specific function. One was in charge of percussion etc. One did the rhythms, and one did the leads. There were variations but it worked well...especially given the technical limitations of gear back then. That show changed my life. This show should be exciting. Good lighting, good vids and good luck.

I've always thought Sam never got the recognition he deserved. I'm glad he's finally getting it - this dude will take over the world. The fact that he has 2 other musical geniuses behind him is going to take them all to the next level.

I'm prepared to get crucified for this but... none of them are musical geniuses. That term gets thrown around too much. Sam is a genius there's no doubt about that, but it's not musical genius. He will spend weeks crafting incredible instruments, beyond anything I could comprehend, and then when it's finished and the time comes to actually make music with it what does he do? Plays boring major/minor chords over a basic 4/4 beat.

@@urmumsbaps I kinda question the use of "musical genius" for anyone, cause it's highly subjective. What style? Where at? What time period? Is it high minded understandings of western theory like someone like Milton Babbitt? Is it mastery over an instrument? Is it being a prodigy? Their emotional connection to their creativity? It's often true that "musical geniuses" are just people who marketed themselves better and were lucky in many ways- poverty and exposure can easily get in the way so we may never hear a possible "genius". Also, since "musical geniuses" are often recognised posthumously not in their lifetimes (even their deaths cause booms in their careers or their work can be lost), we may not know who- whether we consider them geniuses or not will be considered geniuses in the future. It just seems to me to be a pointless exercise to gatekeep what someone wishes to subjectively label people they like in a complimentary way.
