This left me pretty impressed by Benedict Cumberbatch. A lot of guest stars on SNL can barely get through a sketch, and obviously read their lines from cue cards. Cumberbatch had to pretend to be talking to a dummy with a bird's head, and if he needed any prompting, I didn't notice it. I couldn't have talked to that thing without cracking up.

That it's so dumb is sort of the point, like a lot of their show ending sketches. Putting a fine actor like Cumberbatch in ridiculously stupid skits and having him commit to it is where the comedy comes from. I like this one.

Herbert West I like it too. This is pretty much what SNL is about. I think it's funny, Benedict making puns to an eagle statue, being fired by it, and the cardiology bit. I love sketches like this where the writers don't take themselves so seriously. I don't like all the political sketches. You see one you see them all, kind of like politicians.

This would be great if, in the end, it turns out that Benedict is actually Mr. Shaw who has a hard time saying no to people. Come on SNL, you're too scared of punchlines. They don't have to be good as long as they are silly enough. It works for the Pythons

this is like something out of a monty python collection. bizarre, random. ben really does remind me of john cleese in this. this is british humour which is why it probably wasn’t as well received. these kinds of skits were especially common in british television in the 60’s and early 70’s. i for one love it, but that’s just bc this humour is my jam.

I once saw a guy like Mr. Shaw, he was walking around smoking a cigar inside the building even through the building was no smoking. A guy was following him around with an ashtray. This "Mr. Shaw" did donate the money to build the place, so I guess it was OK.
