My wife and I had a pair of pet rats several years ago and she is absolutely right, they have a ton of personality. They can be litter trained and play much like cats do. They are also good swimmers. Rats in the home are different from pet rats, however, and can be dangerous. There are live traps on the market for catch-and-release from your home.
Those glue traps catch a lot of lizards and geckos which take out so many many bugs. I just had a big fight with two rats in my house for two months. One was HUGE, and came and ate my ripening mangoes until my mother cat gave it to her kittens The second one ate through the double thickness patch on my screen window of fiber glass and aluminum to get to the mangoes and papaya. I caught it in a snap trap and released it before it choked under the pressure but my cat beat it up good.
