I tried to kill this boss first time in 1997 but didn't succeed. Now after 25 years in 2022 the year I'm writing this comment I finally beat him thanks to you!! Probably the hardest boss ever in this game!! Thank you so much for showing me this trick!!
Aside from when you used the pause trick, your gameplay was incredible. For you to have memorized the pattern to the point where you can dodge them just as they appear, knowing a single mistake would kill you, is nothing short of amazing.

@frank7471000 Its not about pressing the selectbutton as fast as you can. If you press select as fast as possible, you wont let the thunderbeam do its damage on him. If you look closely, when the thunderbeam does the damage to the devil, you can see a white flash on his eye. AFTER that flash, you press select again and wait for the next flash to show up and so forth. I have done it so many times that I have timed the times when I have to press select ;-)

that trick is really well known, he's really not that hard to beat once you got the whole order of the rocks down, but if people found this video helpful, well then you've truly helped them out
Certainly was awesome to watch, specially coming in with only one shot of the electric thingy hahaha Without the glitch I would say this is one of the most challenging megaman bosses.

I owe you one man,thanks :D My friend and I spent more of twenty hours yesterday and today on beating Megaman 1, and we still didn't make it,but you have save us some good amount of time and nerves :) I also must say that this is hardest game I have ever played.
Fun fact: You can also do this with other bosses, Like if you time Ice blaster or whatever on Fire Man and keep pausing, it'll do the same thing like Yellow Devil
Hehe thanks! If you press select while playing Megaman 1 you can see that everything freezes. You can use this trick when defeating bosses, as you can see :) But after a while its not really funny because you want the bosses to be hard and not easy ;D Thanks for your comment :)
lol man that trick was so fun to use. I remember using that...the weird thing is back in 87 I honestly don't know how my friend knew it..Nintendo Power maybe?
holy shit, I wasn't aware of this. I was actually using the pause button to see where the yellow blocks will appear and dodge them. but still a couple of them would hit me and i wasn't doing enough damage to kill that bastard. this is waay better hahah

Come on, the Yellow Devil is not THAT difficult. His attack pattern is the exact same every time, once you get it down and know when to jump, he becomes easy.
I think the mechanics for this boss is incredible as it gave an excuse for having a sprite heavy object and still having a fun fight with it by using a varied "flicker" effect where essentially the sprite splits into pieces and flies at you giving you a better experience than having to deal with flickering if it was from the original game
the pause glitch also works on Megaman anniversary edition as well, the pause glitch works well on Wily boss stage on his flier before the shield and after the shield is gone
That's because when you pause the game, the boss's "invincibility" timer doesn't pause with it, thus making it vulnerable after you unpause after waiting till the timer ends. And since the projectile disappear on contact with the boss, this "drains" it's health after each unpause.
@Deboogs if you look at the begining you'll notice he jumped across all of them without even moving lol... I would not dare to say anything to this awesome megaman player xD
Holy shit, I played Mega Man 1 all this time without knowing the pause trick and Yellow Devil the most annoying ass boss in the entire game. Now I gotta play this again using that
Seeing how capcom found out about the pause trick you can no longer pause with a quiet sound. Instead you get to pause with music and a list of defeated robot master weapons you can use.

That pause glitch is the only good thing about the original Mega Man, haha....the game is hard enough without passwords, bosses like yellow Devil....and many many other elements that did not survive to reach Mega Man 2.
Shadow Devil from X5? He is based off of Yellow Devil, duh. :P X5 also has you fighting Rangda Bangda, a boss from the first Megaman X game. Man X5 was awesome.
I LOVE this glitch!I do it all the time!Man,Yellow Devil used to be the HARDEST boss in Mega Man I've ever fought.But once I found out about this,I abused it on him!BTW,this trick works with ANY weapon that goes through enemies.(Ex.Fire Storm,Rolling Cutter,Ice Slasher)
Can’t do this is the newest collection since the pause button (select) was replaced to goto the in game options. 😜 Also this cheater feature can be used on all the bosses even the slowbot masters. 😜
You know, I love you and at the same time I hate you... I spent like 1 hour trying to kill the yellow devil today .... and I didn't think about the Pause Trick XD I'll never forget it again!!!
@flyzer97 i don't think you can (PS2) select takes you to the menu where you can go to the title screen and what ever and start is just the weapon menu.
The Anniversary Collection? Yes. This is the only Megaman game this worked with, though. You could basically beat every boss in the game like this, but Yellow Devil was the only one that was worth bothering with. I think the only other time I bothered with it was on Elecman with the Rolling Cutter if I was doing a speed run.
Did you see him play? is obvious that he can kill it without glitches. Actually is easier that way than timing the pause button and dodging perfectly in the left of the screen
@art11art12 Yeah, right now this is commonly known thanks to the internet but back then it's hard to imagine how people heard about it. Did nintendo power really tell people how to beat a game by using a glitch? I find that unlikely. He probably heard it from a friend.
