A guide/walkthrough of the battle against Boobeam Trap in "Mega Man 2" for the Famicom.
No damage taken.
This boss, Boobeam Trap, is infamous, due to running out of Crash Bomber and/or Items. They are mandatory to beat this boss.
If you want to save a Crash Bomber for the next stage, you will have to follow this video. Otherwise, every use of the Crash Bomber needs to count.
An alternative strategy is to destroy all the walls, then purposely lose a life and farm from the enemies to refill the Crash Bomber. The walls do not reappear.

SMALL TIP: The pause trick can be used to avoid the shots. If the timing is right, the shots will phase through.

Due to Nintendo confirming how to pronounce NES as...'Ness' (as of August 2, 2018) through a game called "WarioWare Gold" (Japanese version), I'm referring to the original Japanese name for both Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Super NES). The reason why is because I find Nintendo's confirmation very stupid. Back in the late 1980s and 1990s, they said 'N.E.S.' and 'Super N.E.S.' during the commercials. They said it themselves. Look those videos up, and you'll see what I mean. Now, after 1985 (released on October 18, 1985 in North America), Nintendo suddenly decided to change up the pronunciation of NES (from N.E.S. to 'Ness'). This will cause some confusion between the American/European consoles and the "Mother" ("EarthBound") character, Ness. Therefore, I'm referring to both of those consoles as the Famicom (FC) and Super Famicom (Super FC), as they are originally called that in Japan. You people are free to call those consoles however you want, but I'm sticking with the original Japanese names from now on. And to those who ask 'Why not call the third generation console just Nintendo?', calling the console that is also the name of the company, and that can cause some confusion between the console and the company. I could call Nintendo's fourth generation console just Super Nintendo, but some people would rather abbreviate the name to just Super NES or SNES for obvious reasons (mainly because the name is very long). That's another reason why I'm sticking to the original Japanese names. From time to time, I may even abbreviate the name Famicom to just FC and the name Super Famicom to just Super FC or SFC. I hope you people understand where I'm coming from with this.

I use to consider MM2 the best game in the franchise. However, after replaying this boss battle, I’m not sure. This is terrible boss design.

Play Megaman 3 if you havent already. It's my personal favorite. The enemy respawns arent cruel, the bosses aren't awful like the one in this video, and Megaman can slide.

Ok, I didn't know it was possible to beat this boss without dying. I always ran out of the crash man ammo, so I used to destroy the walls and then let the turrets kill me, then refill the crash man gun and destroy the turrets on the second try. I found it really irritating how the game forced me to die on purpose in this fight.

I thought you had to die too. I remember using the Game Genie for infinite health as a kid and ending up stuck on this boss because I'd run out of crash ammo.

@@tawagotoCage ????? you can go in there with full crash ammo and run out unless you do that glitch getting the bomb stuck in the wall. there is no "normal' way to do this without running out of ammo

For anyone reading these comments, yes this boss is ridiculously hard, but wanna know the secret to make it super easy? Spam the pause button when the turrets shoot at you and they can't touch you, just do it until the bullets are pretty much past you. This means you are only vulnerable when using an item or a bomb. So take it slow and play it smart. You don't have to get the well place bomb at the beginning like this guy did.

Quickman second weakness is the charged heat shot. still hard to land a hit. But the outcoming damage will surpass the buster by far too much if you time it correctly. I've discovered it after trial and error because I ran out of energy with the time stopper on the stage beams section

The game's fun at times, but far from the best, at least in my opinion. Most of the stages felt either unfair (be it through trial and error, forced item usage, tons of instant death, or really bad enemy designs) or just boring. Plus, a lot of bosses seem to have no pattern and move and attack randomly (however, that's just from personal experience and might not be accurate). On top of that, every weapon that isn't the Quick Boomering, Leaf Shield, or Metal Blade, while not totally useless, are completely outclassed by those 3. Yes, all the games follow the same formula, but I personally think the later games managed to make it much more fun than 2.

I think the boss design, the layout etc. is fine. What's not fine and what's poor game design is the fact that there is only 1 weapon that can destroy the walls and the glowing weak points. Even if a charged fire shot could kill the weak points, that would be somewhat acceptable. But given the fact that this game came out in 1988 when developers were still experimenting etc. the boss fights poor design doesn't surprise me in retrospect.

I would not say this is a great game. In fact, I would say this is an average game. There are many good things about the game, but there are many flaws that hold the game back from being fun at times. There is a series called "Nico Evaluates", mainly covering nearly every "Mega Man" game. Check that series out if you are interested.

It doesn’t matter how old I get this will always be the ONE part of MM2 I will always dread getting to. I mean as a kid MM2 took me HOURS to beat but now I can finish the game in under an hour but this one bullshit boss is always gonna be the worst part of this game for me. I mean I always dreaded the Doc Robot stages in MM3 but even those I’ve gotten used to and actually like to see how fast I can speedrun them. So yeah it’s pretty obvious I HATE this boss. Hell the only thing I hate worse is King Stage 2 in MM&B especially as Mega Man.

The first "Mega Man" got a remake on PlayStation Portable called "Mega Man Powered Up". There was going to be a remake of "Mega Man 2" on PlayStation Portable called "Mega Man Powered Up 2", but plans fell through, as "Mega Man Powered Up" did not sell well. So, unfortunately, a remake of "Mega Man 2" will likely never happen. As for the game itself, it actually has many problems, mainly the weapon balance, some enemy placements, and stage design after the regular stages. As shown in the video, this boss design is terrible. There is a series called "Nico Evaluates", mainly covering nearly every "Mega Man" game. Check that series out if you are interested.

I could never beat this boss as a kid (10yo). and I finally beat this boss as an adult after 2 hours without knowing what the actual strategy was. So after I beat the boss, I came here to see how you're actually supposed to beat it. fuck this boss, not many kids back then in the 90's knew how to beat this abomination

me too. i play it on the nestopia emulator, it was 3 a.m and i losed a thousand times trying to beat this boss because the crash bomber ammo gets empty very fastly.... i just want to beat this boss and finish mega man 2.............. and then go to mega man 3 and complete the rest.........

You don't have to cheat. It's not even that hard, by Mega Man standards. Jump when the pods start flashing and you'll probably avoid getting hit. Of all the punishingly hard bosses in the Mega Man series, why are people complaining about this one?

Horrible boss - I used *HATE* it when I couldnt beat it.......now I can beat it, I just hate it. Totally un-enjoyable. The yellow devil from MM1 was tough........but it was enjoyable and once ya beat there was a sense of acheivement.......with this, once ya beat it, its like thank Fk thats out the way.

It's actually super easy if you spam pause when they shoot you, it makes you invulnerable so the bullets fly right through you. I'm serious I just found that out years later.

Yeah, this boss design is definitely terrible. I would not call the first "Mega Man" bad. If anything, "Mega Man 8" and "Mega Man & Bass" (SFC and GBA versions) are generally considered below average games in the main series. "Mega Man 5" is not too far behind either. Sure, it is a fantastic game on its own merits. But as a "Mega Man" game, it is not very good; it is slightly below average.

This is just plain shitty boss design This boss is unbeatable if you don't have a full stock of Crash Bombs beforehand and even then, you're fucked if you waste one of those bombs on those blocks or fail to do a trickshot like this guy did at 0:51 You cannot compare this to something like Ghost Houses in Super Mario World, because you don't need a Fire powerup or Yoshi beforehand to complete these levels, they encourage exploration and critical thinking without resorting to bullshit like this to get their child to subscribe to Nintendo Power

Didn't know that so many people hated this boss. I think it's pretty cool and different. Remember that NONE of the bosses in a Mega Man game are meant to be beaten on your very first attempt. And yet the very first time you set foot in this room, you get a strong hint about the boss's vulnerability by the presence of the bombable walls. That kind of hint is something you don't get with most other bosses. And after you've seen and died to the boss once, you know that you need full crash bombs to take it on.

I FUCKING HATE THIS SHITTY BOSS! When it comes to bad bosses in good Mega Man games, THIS BOSS COMES TO MIND! At least with MM1's Yellow Devil & MM3's Doc Robots, it's possible to beat them Buster Only. BOOBEAM TRAP IS OUT OF THE QUESTION & IT'S BULLSHIT! If you're a Mega Man fan, you know why this boss is the major reason why MM2 is a tad overrated. Knowing Quarter Guy will upload his Top 10 Bad Bosses in Good Games video next month, he won't hesitate to put that fucking boss somewhere in that list. BOOBEAM TRAP IS FUCKING HELL! Edited as of 7/23/2024. I'M EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED IN QUARTER GUY'S TOP 10 BAD BOSSES IN GOOD GAMES! Instead of BooBeam Trap, he put Wily Capsule 7 at #1 likely because of him being spiteful against Keiji Inafune for making that boss intentionally extremely hard. That goes double with Quarter Guy being really spiteful against Keiji Inafune for the disasterpiece that was Mighty No 9 which caused the latter to be the #2 laughing stock of gaming developers next to Yuji Naka. Yes, I get that, but he doesn't understand that BooBeam Trap was even more poorly designed than Wily Capsule 7 solely because that boss from MM2 is a puzzle boss & not a good one at all. Wily Capsule 7 at least acts like a final boss even if poorly handled by Inafune. For one thing, Boobeam Trap is immune to everything except for the shittyass Crash Bomber which has limited ammo count & you can't pause the game when it's active. And there's no W-Tank which does not make a debut until MM7. To make matters worst, one missed shot leads to an unwinnable fight. After losing a life on purpose, you have to refill your ammo which is extremely tedious as hell & then try again this with maybe less walls. IT IS MORE BULLSHIT THAN WILY CAPSULE 7! AT LEAST WITH WILY CAPSULE 7, I HAVE A FIGHTING CHANCE WITH E-TANKS & W-TANKS WHILE BOOBEAM TRAP IS SOMETHING THAT I WILL NEVER EVER TOLERATE WITHOUT USING SAVE STATES! THOUGH IT MADE ME REALIZED SOMETHING, WHY CAN'T LEGACY COLLECTION 2 HAVE SAVE STATES THERE!?
