Mega Man X1 is the Super Nintendo classic almost everybody's played, being the most financially successful and well-received, but I personally think Mega Man X2 is the superior game. To me it seemed to be a smoother, better-crafted experience, mainly because it isn't as arbitrarily difficulty as its predecessor, though the music isn't nearly as memorable and the weapons are disappointing. That said, while X2 didn't get the same amount of loving attention as X1, it performed well enough for Capcom to start developing the third title, so after another twelve months, Mega Man X3 was released for the Super Nintendo on December 1st, 1995. Some critics gave X3 a positive review, praising it as a solid send-off for the 16-bit era, but others had grown tired of the formula, complaining it's the same game yet again, or even noted sluggish and sloppy design overall. Because the Super Nintendo was slowly but surely losing popularity with the then-recent rise of fifth generation consoles, ports of the game for the Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn, boasting anime-esque FMV cutscenes and a re-arranged Red Book Audio soundtrack, came out on April 26th, 1996. This 32-bit version got even more flack than the original, with one source calling Mega Man X3 the worst Saturn title out there. Even fans of the franchise generally consider this swan-song of the SNES trilogy, not necessarily a bad game, but inferior to the previous installments from what I've gathered, so could it be that Capcom was losing it already with the third X game?

In Mega Man X, charge up Rolling Shield on the walls of Sigma Stage 4. It makes Sub -Tank farming much easier. In X2, there are several locations where charging up Silk Shot in certain locations will summon large quantities of health for Sub -Tanks. In X3, get the Golden armor and simply wait around, your health will regenerate immediately, and your Sub - Tanks, too.

X3 was my first Mega Man X game. And yeah the bosses kicked my butt left and right. On my first rental of the game I couldn't beat a single Maverick boss. Not one. ... ...and I LOVED THE GAME FOR IT. Maybe it was just the novelty of these awesome fully-realized colorful bosses with all these crazy attacks and feeling defeated but never downtrodden. Maybe I naively or intuitively realized these bosses weren't unbeatable or unfair. But I had to play more of it! It also inspired me to draw versions of my own maverick bosses. :P

Mega Man X3 was actually developed by one of Capcom's outsourcing companies, Minakuchi Engineering. They also worked on the Mega Man Game Boy line-up (excluding Mega Man II, which was BIOX) and Mega Man: The Wily Wars for Sega Genesis. That pretty much explains why some people believe X3 has a weirdly higher amount of bullshit than the previous 2 titles, because the same is said for the Game Boy titles. That being said, Mega Man X3 is BY FAR my favorite Mega Man game. Not just X, not just the platformers, but period.
@niespeludo
@niespeludo 7 лет назад
Which is pretty interesting. X1 was done by the Original Megaman Team, X2 was done by IntiCreates (of Megaman Zero fame and more) and this one by Minakuchi Engineering. Hence why X1 has such a focus on details and level design, X2 focuses so much on speed and execution and X3 tries so much new stuff.

This one was my favorite in the SNES trilogy, and still my favorite X game period. I know it's got some flaws, like the glitch with Blizzard Buffalo, not the best music at times and other such things, but the sheer amount of things to find with the heart tanks, the ride armors, the armor upgrades and the chip upgrades? Great stuff. Also, the secret chip and Z sabre seem like the most powerful armor X ever had, to me it feels stronger than the Ultimate Armor that shows up in the subsequent games.

Mega Man X3 has long been counted as my favorite game of all time. I came here after watching your X6 review (which was excellent), and I'm overjoyed to hear that you like X3. I've had my SNES copy since I was a little kid, and it's kind of a continuing pleasure to see its value continuing to increase over the years. X3 I feel is the most challenging of the classic trilogy which is great, I feel the enemies are much more aggressive and out for your head if your not used to this game. The Mavericks themselves all pose a unique challenge, although I personally have to avoid Volt Catfish, once he's half health I just cannot avoid his attacks, but can handle the other bosses without too much issue. The Weapons I found half were amazing while the other half were just...lacking, especially Frost Shield/Tornado Fang & Ray Splasher, the first 2 are too slow and just do not have enough power to be useful, the Drill is also just too weak to be useful, Ray Splasher could be nice if the shots weren't so inaccurate, I have to be up close for the weapon to be remotely useful. The other weapons, namely Parasitic Bomb, Gravity Well and Spinning Blade are just great tools to eliminate obstacles, Acid Burst and Triad Thunder have their uses too, as for the armor parts this time around are damn amazing, except for the Head Part, which is pointless sense it's effect is pointless if you have any memory of the game's items, the bonus upgrades are ok but not needed to beat the game, if you know how to get the Golden Armor, you can get all 4 super chips and become Super X, you basically become god if you know how to get Zero's Saber as well. As for the later stage bosses such as Bit and Byte, I can beat Bit with the buster no problem, but Byte can just get a virus and die for good, Byte is a bastard to deal with, even their combined form boss can be annoying sometime, but most of the later bosses are fine, Vile can be an annoyance sometimes but overall is fine, this game's version of Sigma though I think is by far the hardest and the worst to deal with, 1st form I just do not how people cannot take damage in that stage while his 2nd form is just mean, his missiles always ruined me, when I choose to not use Zero's Saber. Forgot to mention the addition of the Armor Suits that you can use from time to time....they are ok, but not needed they mostly are there for players to make certain sections less problematic to deal with, overall I consider X3 to be the best in the trilogy minus the weapons, some of the weapons are nice but when compared to X1's weapons, X3 just can't compete, but X3's weapons are much better then X2's yes, even Frost Shield and Tornado Fang can be of use.......Sorry but no, the X3 ports to the Saturn in terms of the music are trash, completely ruined the tracks and feel of the stages as a result.

Even though X3 is considered to be the worst in the original trilogy of games, it is probably the one that I like the most. The bosses are challenging to fight buster only in a lot of cases, but become a good deal more manageable once you learn what makes them tick; it's for this reason why I think that people who give bosses crap for not being easily beatable as a first pick or that have certain elements that seem "cheap" are not fully understanding the game and it's intricacies on the whole. I think that it's a good thing that they don't make all the bosses this way because it makes certain ones more challenging to defeat, and even some that many people complain about being extremely difficult (most notably Armored Armadillo from X1 and Blast Hornet from X3) are not nearly as bad as people say they are if you take a step back to actually look at what they are doing rather than complaining about all the "shit" that's going on on-screen and dismissing it as being overly punishing. I also liked how much there is to collect in X3, and once you learn more about how the game is structured, there actually is, in fact, an order tou can tackle the stages in that makes you only need to backtrack once: *First, start with Tunnel Rhino's stage, this will be the only one you'll have to backtrack to *From there, I prefer to go after Blizzard Buffalo next. This is because Bit shows up first, and this way, you'll be guaranteed to have his weakness when you do fight him; the tornado fang also lets you get the heart tank without having to go back for it. *The next boss should then be Blast Hornet, so you can get the ride armor as soon as possible. *From there, Neon Tiger is the next option to prioritize, since you need the buster upgrade to get a lot of hidden secrets in this game. If you feel more comfortable doing so, he can be taken on third, saving Blast Hornet for this part instead. *Gravity Beetle should be next, since you need his weapon for obtaining the body armor upgrade. Also, with Blast Hornet already dead (even though he's weak to Gravity Beetle's weapon, ironically), the crates will be gone and you can get the heart tank as well. *Volt Catfish is the next victim, since you need the charged triad thunder in a couple of levels. Also, if you want to get the Z saber, now is the best time to fight and kill Vile (it helps that the teleporter is at the very beginning of the stage). *From here, you can go back to Tunnel Rhino's stage and get the head upgrade and heart tank you couldn't the first time through. Now you don't need to backtrack to any other stages! *The remaining 2 Mavericks can be taken on in whichever order you wish. On a side note, you can probably do Toxic Seahorse's level once you have the buster upgrade instead of waiting until later, but not so much with Crush Crawfish

So here's my pitch. Once upon a time the energy balancer was an optional/hidden item which we now take for granted. X3 could have easily had a super secret item that recharges sub tanks every time you die or slowly overtime when not in combat. Likewise a similar hidden item could do the same with weapon energy. Some games in the MM series already do this(I believe MM8 does refill all weapons upon death)

It's refreshing to finally see a positive review of the game which I also thought was the best in the 16-bit X series, if not the entire X series. I firmly believe that all the negative opinions about this game are specific to the period of time during which it was released; gamers were entering the 32-bit era, and were largely unable to judge X3 on its own merits. The sluggish Saturn port also didn't help overall opinions of the game, nor did spreading its release over the boundary between iconic consoles of the 16-bit and 32-bit eras. It's a shame that the first playable appearance of Zero is so overlooked most gamers, as well as the expansive, non-linear level design and multiplicity of collectibles/upgrades featured in X3. Mega Man X3 has been my personal favourite game in the entire X series since I first played it in 1995; subsequent games were great, but none of them topped X3 in my mind. Thanks for an excellent review!
@petelee2477
@petelee2477 Год назад
The x3 bosses have really simple and predictable patterns. The reason they seem much tougher than they should be is because one hit is half your health for some reason, they just do so much damage. This means you either win at full health or you screw up once and die. That's what it was like for me at least. Obviously weaknesses ruin them.

Great review. Man I really hated the replaced audio in the PS2 collection version. It just sounded wrong for a SNES title, I suppose. But it did give me a chance to play through the whole game, and I definitely enjoyed a lot more than I did as a kid. Back then I felt the stages and bosses were too difficult and I had a hard time even defeating one of them. OH, and you're totally right about dying at the final boss and trying to replenish the E-tanks...this was the main reason I could never defeat Sigma in X1 as a kid. If I died once, I would just get discouraged and switch off the game.

One thing I just noticed now as I was playing on the x collection for switch: in blizzard buffalo's stage, one of the enemies on the last section before the boss freezes you and the only way to get out of the freeze is to take damage. If you land improperly, and with bad timing, its possible to soft lock by landing on the edge of the projectile's arc, and just out of hit range for the enemy. Play safe

Fyi: the Frost shield gives you automatic life drops and the Acid burst gives you automatic weapon drops. juggle both of this on the last stage if you used up all of your health tanks. also by using the password generator(not cheating) you can get 3 of the enhancement chips on you(I PERSONALY HATE LOOKING GOLD!!!). so dump the hyper cannon chip and stick with other 3 for this. you can instakill the 1st form of sigma by hitting him with a charged spinning blade while doing a neon jump. its hard but tripple jointed people should be able to doit. you can also skip the toxic seahorse stage propellers by dashing upward as close as posible to them then keep pushing forward and x should land his feet right above propeller number 2 wall kick quickly and then water skip left to get the kangaroo armor. you can also touch the stairs in tunnel rhino then double dash the ceiling till you see your first enemy. the stage becomes glitchy and you can get the heart container without triad thunder. im still working on a way to get the arm upgrade without the legs etc. l

I have to say that it wasn't my favorite at first, it didn't feel nearly as 'charming' as most Mega Man games in general, opting for this grittier, more mature feel even compared to the original MMX that I felt went a bit too far, especially n that mid-90s era of everything in gaming feeling like it was shifting to a more mature, edgier tone and leaving the happy, charming atmosphere of earlier gaming in general behind. However, as time passed, and especially given my not-very-positive opinion of most the later X games and coming back to it, I grew to not only like but really love this game. The atmosphere's pretty unique and cool, the music actually sounds amazing the more you listen to it imo, and in many ways it does have the most polished graphics and gameplay of the original trilogy Plus it has some of the coolest upgrades and secrets (gold armor + Z-Sabre has to be the most godlike form Mega Man has ever taken) and a good solid challenge throughout, it's just a great package. Yeah, the sidequest, chip stuff and Zero-death crap could have been better, but overall I think this is a great game and I hold it and X2 nearly equal in overall quality as just below X1. Anyway, good luck with the rest of the series -- there are positives and negatives to each game, but overall I feel it never really reaches the overall quality and feel of the SNES trilogy. Of course, having already seen your X4 review and how much you liked that, you might end up surprising me and really liking them all -- X6, for example, which is totally loathed by fans it seems, does have some of the worst aspects in the series but also some of the best IMHO, so I'm looking forward to seeing what you think about that.

Nice style! I liked grinding on the Mavericks to complete a #24 - #1 easiest to hardest, no health or weapon upgrades... X3 had some tough ones!! When I played all of these together, X3 simply has longer levels, more damaging enemies, and objectively more repetitive and shorter musical tracks.. it’s still a good game, it has cool things about it.. I don’t think their levels had to be so long and the music needed to be better. And dammit, was that final fight hard.. my lord.

Have you tried the zero project? it makes zero a regular switchable character like in the ps games so he can fight bosses and die and use special weapons. also nerfs him slightly so he's more balanced with x. It's wonderful. it even modifies the script in some places to accommodate playing as zero through story scenes.

x1, x2, x4, and x8 have easy ways to refill your subtanks, which is part of what makes those games better designed. In X1 you can use the charged rolling shield to instakill the worms by touching them in sigma 4 and quickly fill up your subtanks in about 10 seconds. In X2 you have the hidden rooms where you can charge junk shot to draw in a ton of energy capsules. In X4 you can just go to the top of Frost Walrus's stage at the start and find a ton of weapon and energy capsules. In X8 you can just use scrap metal to refill your tanks right away at the shop menu. X3 is really terrible because it doesnt have easy ways to fill your tanks at the end. The closest they have is that a charged ice shot will cause the first walker mech in the sigma stage to drop large energy over and over, but it's a huge pain and not reliable or easy.

@Jackelbeaver
@Jackelbeaver 8 лет назад
Retropolis Zone Not when it's expedited. If you got full subtanks as a reward for dying then it would be advantageous to waste a life. Dying shouldn't be a reward. You need to have some form of game balance to it. You have exit capsules in x2, so its easy to pop into a stage and then back out in less than a minute. X3 actively wastes your time to fill up your tanks. They don't give you any slack.
@RetropolisZone
@RetropolisZone 8 лет назад
+JackelZXA I can see your argument to game balancing, but I'm still iffy on it. I wasn't saying sub tanks filled as a reward for dying; I was saying all your sub tanks filled at any point you face the final boss, even when just approaching it initially. The player went out of his/her way to find these sub tanks in the first place, and if you make the final bosses pretty damn hard without 'em, isn't that enough? If the process of refilling sub tanks is so boring that that is the reason you can't be bothered to try again... is that fun and well-balanced? Shouldn't the punishment for dying to the boss simply be restarting from the start of the fight? Why does it need tedious sub tank refilling on top of that?

The subtank issue for the finale sigma battle. I think thats a strategic play as well. When you fighting him and very low on health, you have to make a judgement call either to use the sub tanks or admit defeat to save the subtank..i liked that. Yeah collecting subs back all the time was tedious. Thats why i opted for the helmet upgrade. It cam replenish your subtank if u stand still. I just have to leave x standing still and went made a sandwich while waiting. Good times.

I like X3, even if it is a drop-off from 2 and 1, it's still really good. The biggest problem for me is the repetetive enemies. Such a bizarre game. There’s a genuine classic here, put its hidden under layers of weird design choices and obnoxious aspects. Bosses are absolutely punishingly brutal until you get their weapon and then they’re hilariously easy. There’s way too much shit to collect and parts of the game are needlessly obtuse (kill a certain boss with a certain weapon and then know to change to Zero for a random boss fight when you can’t do that for any other boss in the game to get the Beam sabre). Zero is also woefully underused and I didn’t even reason you could play as him until like my 3rd playthrough because he’s buried in one of the menus. The music has way too many electric guitar synths that get grating after a while, the level design is weirdly flat and dull, the super charged shot is awful and the path to the Gold Armor makes no sense (collect the chips but don’t equip any of them. What? How about just collect the 4 chips, why can’t I use any of them?). They try to do the whole ‘beating a certain boss changes other levels’ but it doesn’t make sense the way they do it. Beating Chill Penguin and having Flame Mammoth’s stage freeze over makes sense. Beating a random boss which makes a crate despawn in another level does not. It’s weird shit like that that just ends up bringing the game down and turning what genuinely might’ve been the best X game on the SNES into a total chore at times

X3 is by far my favorite of the SNES trilogy. Fantastic sountrack, the best armor in the series (yes, I think golden Third armor is better than Ultimate armor), the most well-balanced weapon set aside from Tornado Fang, and the best super weapon in the Z-saber. My only gripe with it are that some of the 8 Mavericks are nearly impossible without their weaknesses (Seahorse, Catfish, and Beetle, all of which suffer immensely from Spark Mandrill Syndrome) and that some enemies and bosses deal WAY too much damage without power ups (Blast Hornet's sting attack, the Wall Cancer enemy, and Sigma 1 come to mind). Other than that, X3 is a nearly perfect game for me
@Art_Izon
@Art_Izon 6 лет назад
I honestly think the best solution to the sub-tank problem would have been to not include them in the first place, but that's probably a pretty contentious viewpoint. Actually, here's a thought -- no more health pickups at all. You start the game with an ability to instantly heal you to full HP, but only your starting HP. What used to be the Sub-tank pickups are now permanent power-ups for that ability, which eventually maxes at the same value as your fully-augmented max HP. The game action halts like normal while your health refills, so you can also use it as a timing safety net to give yourself a bit of extra time to react to a situation. It also emphasizes decision-making on the part of the player as to when the best moment to use their healing might be (during stage or against the boss or whatever). If weapon energy were refilled on death (including the healing ability), that fixes the Sub-tank problem completely with an added advantage to help players learn the fights (by giving them that extra moment of healing to think about what's going on). Of course, there's then the problem of weapon energy pickups, because if anything other than death can recharge this healing ability, it would become incredibly OP immediately. This isn't a perfect solution, but I feel it would be a significant improvement on the existing system, since it removes the grinding and helps ease players into the game with a reliable source of healing (instead of having to rely on random drops) while still maintaining the sensation of growing stronger via collectibles.

Your Idea is actually really good. It doesn't need to really be revamped at all. Though it doesn't really need as harsh a limit either. think about it: Reserve tanks are yes, a good thing. and you can have 4 of them, which means up to 4.5 full health meters for boss fights. But if the stage is rough, you can pop one and just grind health-ups till you fill the tank. Purely to smooth it out, have it be a starting "weapon" with its own power bar. Don't make it chargeable. doesn't Need it anyways, and would just take away very precious weapon resource anyways. make each use take 25% of the Weapon Energy. Now you have 4 uses. and yes, maybe that seems OP, but weapon recharging is fast anyways. Reserve tanks simply "UP" the % of a max value health meter that it restores. So if you don't find 2 of or 3 of the health containers, it doesn't matter that you also didn't find one of the reserve tanks either. I would say that the "weapon" itself recharges 20% of a maxed out Health meter, and each reserve tank adds an additional 20% it Runs on weapon energy and can be recharged by weapon tanks (which seem to charge twice as much anyways) Due to the fact that it is technically a weapon Like Rush in basic megs games, You start with it. I would say that unlike any other weapon you can activate it from the menu. Finally, for Balance and a slight limitation, yes it auto charges, but always last, so basically, only if your other weapons are already full. I would say that you can equip it to maunualy recharge, like any other weapon.
@Art_Izon
@Art_Izon 5 лет назад
4 uses *is* OP because of the time-stop feature. Activating it from the menu seems silly since it removes the brief time-stop feature. I think the option to give a player an extra second to react is a criminally undervalued feature, and recharging is unnecessary. The primary goal is to help with boss fights. At least, I personally have never needed sub-tanks during the bulk of a stage. In all honesty, I'm just adapting Kingdom Hearts 2's Cure spell for Mega Man X, since I think it's one of the best examples of self-healing abilities in games.

For the record, I think that filling sub tanks in X3 is easier than any of the other SNES counterparts since killing an enemy with frost shield will literally *always* drop health. I do still think filling the tanks is a bit repetitive, but still. That combined with the fact that the helmet chip fills tanks too just kinda nulls that.

To refill health, kill ennemie with the ice weapon, to replenish energy use acid bomb. Killing ennemies with the appropriate weapon makes the refilling chore way easier. Plus, missing energy to shoot the ice spike, kill enemy with acid to get more energy. Use ice for sub tank, rince and repeat. Hope it helps a few player, try it and see for yourself. Each weapon increase the odds of drops and... it's a way to manage them too.

You can refill your sub tanks in 30 seconds. While I grew up to these games, 'this' was the one I played the most on SNEX9x v1.2 (when the encoder altered white noises making Crono's luminaire sound bad ass). @RetropolisZone
@RetropolisZone 7 лет назад
Whether a boss is tough or not is subjective, I'd say. As a newcomer I think plenty of people experience difficulty with these. Also, yeah I know about the farming spots and they mitigate the problem. I just don't think they fully resolve the matter, to be honest. Like, you can go to Bubble Crab's stage and charge the Silk Shot, but you'd have to know about it in the first place and constantly having to get a game over to get out of Sigma's level, going to Bubble Crab's stage and then returning isn't my idea of fun. I think the situations could have been handled better, was the main point. :)

Sorry for taking so long to reply on this, personal stuff keeps me occupied. Anyway, good review on Mega Man X3, wasn't aware that the newer ports on the next-gen consoles at the time were kind of considered to be bad for slowdown issues, guess working out the CD-based hardware was tough for them. I can definetely see why the 'obscuring camera leading into a possible cheap death trap' issue might be infuriating, because I played a decent amount of 2D platformers where I have to make leaps of faith andget screwed over rather easily that it becomes trial and error-based. And I also find a valid complaint in the 'grind excessively just to have a easier time with a hard boss.' department. It kills off any sort of moderate pacing a otherwise great game has and only truly patient people can put up with that sort of shit. It's a pet peeve of mine in most old-school RPG's with hard-hitting boss encounters where you have to grind for about 2 hours or possibly more to get a few levels up just to try and have a legit shot of beating said boss, and it's no better in the method the X games would apparently handle it if you can't handle barely getting shot at and learning the very tricky patterns. Oh well, great review there Michael, looking forward to Symphony of the Night, you miserable little pile of amazing reviewing capabilities!

16:48 DUDE! Even in X1 you can break the boss pattern by using the proper weapon. Sting Chameleon acts like Neon Tiger, trying to get back into its pattern after being hit. Sparl Mandrill is totally broken. You freeze him every time he is about to break free and he does nothing aside from breaking free to which you freeze him right away again. Or Armored Armadillo. You shoot him with the proper weapon and he becomes a whimp. Only few enemies are less affected. And in X3 this is not different in any way. Alas I played a different game?

Ranting about Bit and Byte was silly. If you do not defeat them properly before, the boss encounter in Doppler's first stage is even easier. And defeating Vile-MK II before entering Doppler Stage 2 means you get a chance to obtain the Z-Saber if you know how to do that, and it gives you and easier boss fight this time. Depending on my mood I go for any of those options which keep the game fresh even after decades.
