Nice new bench. I have just finished putting all my older bench’s and tools on mobile stands. The tops will all eventually be the same as my MFT. What I did on my main work bench was to cut a 4X8 sheet of ½” MDF to the same size as the top. I put some smaller size turn hardware that get turned in the vertical position and hold the MDF in place. Now I can cut down my sheet material without cutting into my bench. As long as I adjust my track saw depth so that it just kisses the MDF it can be used over and over again. I like the idea that you cut out sections in your cut protector but I guess I’m lazy and just haven’t done that. Thanks so much for sharing your work.

I have emailed the nice people st KJN about this table, although my table is much smaller at 60inch by 30inch, I was tempted with the festool mft but not big enough and way to wobbly, so awaiting a quote from, KJN thanks for the excellent video, very helpful.

Hah, I was watching this video earlier, and then later on I bought some plans for something very similar on etsy. Anyway I come back to the video to see how you fixed the top down and lo and behold it was your store on etsy! :D Going to make a mini version, using a prebought birch ply copy of a Festool MFT as I'm a bit limited on space. I'd ordered a 3000mm x 1500mm top and was looking for support ideas. After seeing this I sketched up something similar and asked for a quote. It came back at £840.00 plus delivery. I then went on Manor Wood's Etsy site and bought the PDF cutting list for £6, i adapted the sizes to fit my top, easy, and then went back and ordered the parts myself, total £399 plus delivery. Best £6.00 I ever spent! Thanks for all your hard work in sorting a great table, saving us all time and money. Cheers!

Hi. The ally profile you use will that accept the festool track pivot and rest for the rails to become a cross cut saw?? I sure hope so as that’s my only problem finding a profile that would work with the spare parts I could buy direct from festool. The bit where you make a cross cut table is what I want to replicate. Thank you

I'm thinking of doing a table like this. Maybe only 80cm wide, but otherwise exactly like it. But I'm worried about the top sagging in the middle. One of the big points of this type of table is that it's very flat. Can you tell how the top has performed over time?

Did applying the finish to your plywood top shrink the dog holes at all? I've found that my Festool MFT top has some dog holes that have absorbed finish from projects and now a dog either won't fit or is very tight.

@@ChanseArrington Chanse, 8020.net/ is one vendor in the US, it's worth it to read their documentation, then try to keep your wallet closed. They call it erector sets for adults for good reason. I've been thinking of doing something similar on a smaller scale, although for about $350 you can buy the Kreg Adaptive Cutting System tabletop with it's accessories. It's made for their saw and track but some people figure you should be able to adapt it to another brand.

That looks to be a really nice and sturdy bench. Would you consider using a sheet of expanded polystyrene foam for the sacrificial "board"? The sheets here in NZ are a tad smaller than the 1.2 x 2.4M sheets of ply or MDF but it still works a treat. They are light so moving off the table is easy and they can be leant against a wall when the assy table is being used for something else. I'm on my second sheet of foam in 8 years and cost about NZ $60. Cheers, David.
@ManorWood
@ManorWood 6 лет назад
I like the sound of that, what thickness did you go for ? we have a foam board called jablite which is polystyrene or do you mean more like Celotex Insulation Board which looks more like a foam
@Psychlist1972
@Psychlist1972 6 лет назад
For glue-ups, I use a sheet of whiteboard-one-side hardboard. The glue comes right off, and the paint can come off if I really want to clean it off. I didn't drill it, though, so it's only useful when not using the features of the table.
@Psychlist1972
@Psychlist1972 6 лет назад
But I see that's not how he's using the sacrificial top here. The styrene sounds like a good idea, but it will gum the blade just a little because it's a thermoplastic. We have that stuff here (not sure if styrene or pvc), but it's super expensive for a 4x8 sheet.
@harveysmith100

Lawson's Timber sell 8x4 sheets of polystyrene 25mm and 50mm I think. Much cheaper than mdf and so light.
@ThekiBoran
@ThekiBoran 6 лет назад
For a sacrificial cut top I use 4" wide strips of 1/4" MDF. I think what I'll do is switch to 3/8" MDF. I'll then clamp them in place and from the underside and I'll hot glue 3/4" dowel cut to 3/8" thick or so so they don't slide around. I have a full size mft work table, unfortunately it's fully enclosed so I don't currently have access to the underside.

Love the table....that made it to my future project list! Question though, why would you buy a TS55 when you already have a TS75? you only get about 20mm, which I don't see why one would need both but maybe you have a good reason that I haven't thought of? I have the TS55 and thought about getting the TS75 but cannot justify the $$660 for 20mm more depth.
@ManorWood
@ManorWood 6 лет назад
I have sold the TS55 now and just use the HS55 cordless , I have the TS75 for tracking down thicker slabs. best thing about the TS55 was the size weight and feels the TS75 get very fatiguing
@bighands69
@bighands69 5 лет назад
I use TS55 when out on site work as it can be lighter and deal with most of the cutting depths that I need. In the workshop where I have a cutting station set up I use the TS75. I still carry a TS75 for sites but rarely use it.

Nice job on the bench!!! I am gonna build a similar bench 10' 9" x 2' (328cm x 70cm) with the widest span between legs being 4feet (122cm). How much sag are you getting between your long span and short span with say 20 pounds (9kg) on there in the in the middle? I will be using two sheets of 3/4inch (19mm) birch ply doubled to make a 1 1/2" (38mm) thick top so the top itself will weigh quite a bit. I cant have more than 1mm sag with 9kg in the middle of a 122cm span... Thanks and kind regards, Tom

For me there has not been any problem with flex or sag (but i haven measured it) , if you are worried use 80/40 top and bottom there is little cost into , then you can alway at a centre vertical 40/40 if there a problem . its a great system as you can add and take away at anytime good luck :)

Fab Job on the Table, Brilliant! I am ordering the Profiles from KJN as in your cut list I bought from you, but just have a question regarding the pre-drilled holes that came with the profiles that you mentioned at the start of the video. There was no measurements on the cut list for the pre-drilled holes, can you update the cut list or even just post them? Cheers
@ManorWood
@ManorWood 5 лет назад
I will look into this , if you order profile you will see how easy it to to measure in from the edge to the correct amount. The holes you drill are simply to access bolt head to tighten so do not need to be 100%

Very nice, like your other bench, and certainly a method I will use for a much smaller bench, using 45mm B type profile. Thanks for the tip. Not that it will be an issue for a smaller bench, but do you get any deflection in something that long, without a centre support leg at 4ft?

as I have used a 80/40 on the top rail its very solid I haven't seen any deflection at all , my only worry was the corner joints so I did order some 80/40 90 degree brackets but haven't had to use them as its so solid.

It's incredibly cumbersome, bulky, and if I ever had to take it apart to move it out of the shop it would be a pain to reassemble. On the other hand, I don't think the cutting template is going to last you very long....as soon as you score that thing in one of those relief areas, my hypothesis is that it will snap as soon as you pick it up. Great concept but you may want to make less relief cuts in it next time to give it a little more rigidity. Thanks for making the videos...awesome stuff!!

Alternatively, [sparsely] glue the original onto 3mil ply which you'll never cut, so it stays together. When zones get too cut up, scrape/cut out and reinforce/refill with the many offcuts.

why not get two sheets, cut one in long strips (2440mil) one in short (1220mil) --- that would be a fast job. Now use on the MFT whatever set you need depending on whether it's a crosscut or not. A bit slower to position than this for each cut ---- but so much faster to make and infinitely lasting, so on balance faster. Plus it's three-four sets you've ended up making so can sell/swap/donate sets.

instead of the sacrificial mdf sheet, maybe use a sheet of rigid insulating foam.

If only you had access to a Co2 laser, it would have cut the mdf in 15 mins

Enjoy your vids...….. But..... Is it possible for you to get a clip-on microphone so that your speaking echoes are eliminated and also the fluctuation of your speaking volumes as you move in and away from the camera become clear and uniform? :>) Apologies if this is a comment you've heard a lot before. The echoes alone make the vids less appealing and it would seem you certainly have the resources to allocate funds to improve your audio which, for most presenters on RU-vid, should be a no-brainer. Just an honest comment. No harm intended. Again, like your stuff.

No chance , I am not a video maker I am furniture designer making video to help people so how things are made and ways to work for free , I am not working in a sponsored work shop :)

Manor Wood: call it what you wish but you’re really marketing yourself overall via your videos, so it’s a small step towards improving your product and vision and it certainly does not require a sponsorship in order to budget for better audio, given your apparent budget for other, more efficient and certainly more expensive tools. Obviously your choice. Brand marketing always can be improved with an open mind. An evolution in the quality of your audio/video message, IMO, only increases your subscribers and possible new patreons; it certainly won’t hurt these stats, and your ROI is disproportionately positive for such a small change in the presentation quality of your message. Thanks for sharing your work, regardless.
