the wrong way, You should start with the handle, and the end knots would be inside the "fist".

@@shanemater589 - No, if You do it right, and put the knot where the "handle" starts, and put the knot inside the "fist", also You should leave some rope over, as not to cut just before the knot. And ofcourse those short ropes inside the "fist".

Oh I forgot, cut the rope with the fire, therefore it does not make a ball like end. When cutting with fire, pull the rope to make the ends sharp, then cut little bit, and round it with the fire.

The Monkey's Fist, tied around a rock or other heavy ball-shaped object, has been used historically as improvised melee weapon, called a Slungshot. Slungshots were outlawed in many jurisdictions in the United States including California, Oklahoma, and Michigan. Check with local law enforcement before carrying one around.

To minimize waste and determine how much paracord you need for a monkey's fist: [1] Divide the diameter (D) of the core by the diameter (d) of the flattened paracord (while paracord is basically round, it will flatten when cinched around the core). [2] Drop any fractions/remainders (this is the number of wraps you will make in one direction). [3] Multiply the result by 3 (wraps in all three directions). [4] Multiply this result by the diameter of the core and pi. RoundDown(D/d) × 3πD Note: this is just for the monkey's fist. You will need more paracord for the handle, lanyard, and stopper knot.

My dad told me when he was in the Navy back in the 1960's a monkey's fist knot was the "shenanigans" tool of choice among the sailors.

When I was in the Navy, late 80’s, the monkey’s fists were the heaving line knot of choice. The dimensions were around 4” x 4” and had a heavy piece of metal as a core. They were used as a weight to pass the messenger line to shore, which is tied to the heavier hawser, when tying up the vessel to a pier. The game that we played was to see if you could hit the sailers on the pier that were trying to catch the messenger line. I never saw anyone get hit but a few did have to jump out of the way!

In the Navy, we used Monkey Fists to throw lines to shore, or another ship/boat to pass a larger line across. The weighted line helped with distance and accuracy.

Thanks so much for your easy to follow tutorial! I've only made a monkey fist once before, a small one, but decided to make a big one as a dog toy and it came out great! I don't have a jig, but just used some pencils and cardboard. The only thing that wasn't perfect was the two ends, one was waaaayyy longer than the other, but I'm still pretty happy with the result.

@Wize One Also should check the state laws in which you live for having said "impact tool" unless you're just gonna hide it at home. Some of these items can and can't be "open carry" in your car or person either. Be safe and check your government regulations where ever you live.

Dude thank you I made my first monkeys fist impact tool with your tutelage! I used a golf ball and I could not get the crown knotting. However I managed to tie I off and hide the terminations fairly well for my first try. You are right the cinching of the ball takes practice especially to get it even.

Dang wish this video was around a few years ago when I made mine, that knot stopper knot is clean too. I went from fist into a four-strand round braid, with the monkey's fist being red and white to red, white, and grey braid with a loop handle. I used a 1"-1/2 steel ball off eBay that runs for 8 bucks, and that carabiner attachment might make me have to do this project again to strap it on my go-bag 🤔. This is a great tutorial for those looking for an all-around up-close "DEFENSE TOOL"!! Great job I know this is months later 👏👏👌👌

I have actually used a monkey fist in an area where a hammer would not work as a demolition tool. There was not enough space to swing a conventional hammer but I was able to arc my monkey fist into the space to hit from the right direction to separate the boards enough to get my prybar in. Could I have cut them apart? Absolutely, but I would have lost about a foot of usable wood per board.

I love how this came out, but it seems the 2 paracords coming from the paw to your handle are a weak point. is there a way to braid it so four cord ends exit the paw?

I can see why those two points may seem like a weak point, but with it being 550 paracord, it's rated for much more weight than that pool ball and any combined centrifugal force it can generate. However, I think you can always try to pass one of the two running ends out to the same spot as the opposite one so that they exit the monkey's fist at the same point and weave it from there. (I hope that makes sense...lol)

550 is tough as nails but it is the outside sheathing that frays, long before inner strands will break. I have used 550 as boot laces for years, and the brass eyelets eventually fray the sheathing but I have never broke the laces in 20 yrs of use.

@@TheRoadhammer379 True that the sheathing will fray, but considering that your're comparing 550 as bootlaces to 550 for this monkey's fist, I don't think the 550 on the monkey's fist will fray like they would as bootlaces. Mainly because using paracord as bootlaces puts a lot of wear and tear on them, such as you mentioned with the brass eyelets and tying/untying everyday. So really, that would depend on how much actual use or wear you put on the monkey's fist.

tommy rocket Believe it or not, they actually sell 2 inch steel ball bearings on Amazon, which weigh 1.25 lbs (20 oz) each...... Which is far worse than a resin 8-ball. Which is only 5.5 oz.

A 4 or 5 pass version could definitely be done, it's the exact same process, just with less paracord and a smaller core.

I always bring out both lines at the same 'corner', opposite the center of the line on the opposite corner of the fist. is there an advantage to bringing them out at different corners?

Also illegal in the state of Connecticut. If you use a smaller ball, like say a marble or a ball bearing AND have it in your pocket... INSTANT FELONY. Concealed weapon... You go to prison ...so beware of how "cool" these are !

@@bluetaigax1747 Using this is still considered self defense but has to be proven that you're defending yourself from harm. But the weapon that is illegally possessed by you, you're still accountable or liable of charges holding said illegally weapon.

I used to work in dockyards, we had heaving (throwing) lines made with a 3” steel or lead ball, flew lovely but don’t be in the way.

Checkout Cane Master Canes. They are medical devices cannot be taken by ANYONE unless you use it as a weapon. Because of HIPPA laws can not ask why you have it. Extremely effective with a bit of training.
