I didn’t realise how the long this video was until I started to watch it. Now going to savour this for later and watch it properly with a beer or glass of wine 🍷😁
Uptick as always, wonderful to vicariously follow along on one of your hunts. A video like this should put to pay the notion for all the Rolex fanboys that there is an exclusivity and frankly a notion of luxury when it come to Rolex vs comparable brands. Unless, there is nothing more luxurious than paying twice as much for a mass produced product in shrink wrap and displayed in its hundreds if not thousands within one square kilometer. Cheers!
Rolex is one of the largest watch producers; a couple of years ago I looked up the annual production numbers and it was around the 750,000 unit figure. Sure enough there are those who belief that they are so rare that only a few thousands are made each year, but that would not even allow every one of their dealers a single watch to sell.
I've traveled to HK (Kowloon) for biz before the pandemic. Always marveled at the jewelry and watch shops along the Golden Mile. I noticed Tudor is popular. I recently started collecting watches. I'd like to go back once pandemic restrictions are more relaxed. My concern are knockoffs.
Great Video of window shopping! With covid still around haven't been back to HKG for 2 yrs now....itching to get back. BTW 888 on the window cards means it's from the HK Rolex /Tudor AD, their region code is #888. Obviously other regions have their own ID. Love that Mong Kok\YMT hunting ground...Happy shopping all! Also a lot of ppl don't know Gerald Genta designed the Pasha.
Very interesting video. Enjoyed it. Proves though that Rolex steel sports watches are not rare. As you say, you'd have to be nuts to part with that kind of money for one. Better options out there.
I love what you do .Fantastic footage of the watch dealer landscape in Hong Kong . Thank you for all that you share with us . Keep up your great market price condition updates . Best regards from all In Australia and the rest of the world
Thank you, that was excellent! I have not been to HK in many years and it's unlikely I will be able to travel there again. Watch shopping in HK would be a dream for me, so this was the next best thing.
Nice Video!! Well, I leave HK for almost 5 years. These were my weekend treasure hunt route! I missed it so much! Thank you very much! Bringing me back to my hometown again!
I miss being in HK. I used to go at least once or twice a year for several years. So much to see, do and experience in that lively packed city. Definitely one of the mecas for watch shopping. I got my first TAG Heuer back in the mid-90s as my first real luxury watch. I enjoyed the window shopping. Great way to spend over an hour just checking out the watches in all the places you visited.. and my feet don't even hurt.
Great safari video. I was wandering down Dundas St a few weeks ago and you are right that the stock doesn’t seem to turn over very quickly. So much supply and yet the prices are still crazy - the new normal unfortunately - can’t see it changing as those guys have so much invested in stock and tiny margins!!
OMG got right to the end and your mention of Watch Out is where I picked up my SKX007 on Jubilee about 4 years ago. Thanks for the video, it's great to see the streets and prices.
First time watcher here. A little weird as a HKer watching a vid about watch scene in HK, but in English lol. I'm mostly a dress watch lover so the watches shown here are mostly not my cup of tea, my it's very interesting to learn about what is there to visit if I were to go window shopping for watches. Great vid!
My distant French brother, watching you amazing video from South Louisiana in French Cajun Country. Enjoyed your window shopping in Hong Kong of these so wonderful timepieces, we are for life your subscribers and can't wait for your next widow shop. Merci beaucoup;)
I see all these Rolex in cases ... makes me sad. At least the positive thing I experienced in Japan buying a Rolex from a boutique gives me hope. I was able to get the modern explorer with no purchase history from the local Rolex boutique when I went to get a replacement strap for my dad's old Cellini. I chatted with the sales rep about my watch collection and how I love the explorer while I was waiting for the paperwork. When I was about to leave, the rep came over and offered me the explorer. I then had to sign a doc or something and they jotted down my ID. The reason is because they only sell one sports model per year per customer (they gave me a list) in order to prevent scalpers. They said they want to only sell to people who really want the watch. It seems that Rolex Japan as a whole is keen on tackling the shortage issue fairly. No waitlists too. Hope more countries do this.
I had a similar experience. Got an Explorer from AD last week. The AD knew I was genuinely interested the watch and was excited just to try it on. They offered with only one prior Tudor purchase but i didn't have to sign anything. But yeah if they believe you're not a flipper then you have a chance.
Went exactly same path today, most shops open from 1pm. Really good and informative video. Just a big shame that since that time prices went up so high.
Window shopping at it best. I compare prices and counted. I agree with you the Cartier Pasha is a real nice watch. The most beautiful watch i saw when you filmed is a blue dial VC Overseas.
Gday mate hi from Australua I am new here enjoyed your video, defiantly be following I think the best thing to do if I buy watches Bring you lol..All best for 2022 Phill
Take a walk past these regularly and up and down watch alley. Just there last week. Some decent pricing on Sea Dwellers, Explorer, Yachtmaster and a few Subs. Bought a couple of pieces in the past. Mongkok and TST shows just how large the market is here.
Don't quite get what percentage new means? Prices look reasonable (Rolex) if they come with box and papers in some of the earlier shops in the video. Don't see much JLC. I hear the ever present street crossing warning chime. Vicariously an excellent video. Can't wait to get back
"compared to shibuya" ---> shibuya has changed a ton over the last few years on the Hikarie side. Bunch of new shiny office buildings, ginza line terminus completely rebuilt, etc etc. The hachiko / shibuya 109 is still the same old shibuya.
I live in Sydney which is a major city but we'll never see these pieces in shop windows. What amazes me is that it looks like 10 Subs and GMTs in every window but they still so overpriced.
Always enjoy your videos and thanks for uploading this. I am in 21 day hotel quarantine haha your videos make the day more normal. Wanted to get your view, used batman around the 130k HKD mark still a good buy? Pepsi/Rootbeer seems bit stretched near 180k/200k mark.
It was a price over a month ago. That watch is currently asking around 40k USD in the market. I'd say 35k a month ago doesn't look that suspect... Go back today and the pricing would have been adjusted upwards
It’s interesting how people in Europe and US complain about the lack of stock, whilst the grey dealers in HK have pretty much anything your heart desires.
I have searched for the grand seiko watch (the frosty dial at the end of the video) and have not found anything in their website. Does anyone knows something?
It never hurts to walk in with cash and name your price. Trade in is better if they can make money on what you bring in. Their margins on the new models isn’t large so you’re limited there.
I'm not sure I understand economics. thousands of Rolex for sale, and yet the prices keep going up. It is the same on Chron24 etc. I suppose they must turn over enough of them to create cashflow but I see the same watches lingering and not being sold. And many of the watches you mention have "been there forever" - it seems to me that something is going to give eventually. Inflation is everywhere right now, the imminent collapse of Evergrande who just missed another payment deadline, and yet I suspect Phillips will still have a bumper auction today and tomorrow. And I too have been affected by the hype, I've only considered buying Rolex in the last year or so (having been happy with my JLC, Omega, Longines, Zenith etc.) but I noticed myself pausing the video to check prices on some of those watches - milgauss selling for 1500 more than retail for example (I would love a z-blue). And all the commentators saying buy now as prices are going just one way... and then I remember Ireland's property bubble and the crash. I'll just have to keep bringing in bottles of wine to the manager of my AD and hope for the best!
I don't understand the economics of keeping so much inventory and asking inflated prices. Wouldn't it make more sense to move the inventory and develop a reputation as an honest reseller with better prices? A lower margin but higher volume model would seem to make sense in the current market, especially considering the opportunity cost of tying up capital (current interest rates and potential returns on alternative investments).
Hi Would like to know in shops like these in hongkong where the prices are mentioned in the tags, is that final price or can you get a discount if you haggle. Not asking for the popular models such as Rolex, AP etc but the others.
It never hurts to name your price. Dealers will of course display a high price to start the negotiation with that as reference but you’d be surprised what margin they take on “other” brands like JLC which they pay low prices for. Trading in something valuable also helps sweeten the deals.
@@UptickWatchReviews thanks for reply and the tip. Keep up with the great content. Hope to see some watches and content on Moser. Don't think I have seen much on them on your videos when you go window shopping. What do you think of the brand?
Goodmorning Sir I wanted to ask you: but these watches are original or fake copies. I see that if they are copies they have exaggerated prices, but also if they are original they have low prices. this by comparing them with the prices we have in ITALY. Great video anyway
@@scalarX @SnooZE many thanks for this information . I was not a knowing that in HK had such restrictive laws. Now I understand why in Italy we have to wait from 6/8 months to have a rolex (with prices from fear), the productions all end up in HK😂😂😂
@@UptickWatchReviews Thank you, I'm in Singapore and there's no stock at those big boutiques. Will try get one from HK. 47:16 I just bought this Bulova Devil Diver from Ebay, a very fun watch.
Sure, go in and name your price then see. Gotta be reasonable, most of these guys aren’t taking such a big margin on the hot Rolex stuff. They do on the less popular brands which they take in at very low prices. It’s also easier to trade something in that will let them make a profit on. But stuff that’s hard to sell won’t help much.
