In Mustaine's autobiography, he talks about one show in which Gar dropped his drum sticks and didn't bring a spare pair, so he lost his for a minute under the drum kit. Mustaine cited this show as one of the reasons he fired him.
yeah that was when they had a big explosion cued for one of the songs but they had taken some quaaludes before the show and forgot about it, didn't even tell Gar about it and he got jumpscared by it and dropped his sticks so he spent like a whole minute looking for them as he didn't have any spare sticks left, probably because he pawned them for heroin cash
Hoo boy. The song still sounded great, but the drummer Gar Samuelson was all over the place. In the first minute or so, Mustaine, Poland, and Ellefson are chugging away on their rhythm parts after Chris' solo. Where are the drums? For some reason, Gar has missed his cue and joins in with them a few seconds late. You can see Dave and Chris looking over their shoulders at Gar and then turning back to their instruments when Gar finally starts drumming. Then, midway through the song, when it's time for Dave to play that big blazing solo, Gar doesn't start playing when he should, nearly bringing the whole song crashing to a halt. He again joins in late. Dave is glaring at Gar and Chris looks at Gar, making a "dude, what's up with you?" gesture. For the rest of the song, Gar looks like he's about to fall out of his seat. Man, what a mess he was here. Still a brilliant drummer, but a mess.
Chris J This was definitely Chris Poland dude. You can tell by his solo at 1:00. Haha that IS Chris Poland's playing, trust me I listen to Chris Poland almost everyday. Plus you can tell by the way Chris looks.
I agree. This was probably one of those shows where Gar wasn't there until literally 5 minutes before they went on which means him and Poland are destroyed during this. Poland still did flawless on that solo at 1:00 tho.
We can all agree here that Junior NEVER fucks up. The most responsible and locked in Megadeth member. Dave is lucky to have him. Dave to me seems fine here in this show but in other live shows with the original lineup, he played too sloppy from being high or drunk. Chris may have been a bigger junkie than Dave but was always flawless. This really shows how much more skilled of a guitarist Chris was. Chris Poland’s phenomenal soloing and live playing in these days saved Dave from sounding like shit. Although Dave’s singing and timing of his singing was spot on; plus he has to play crazy difficult guitar AND sing so RESPECT. Gar, like Cris was a top tier musician with next level talent and is my favorite Megadeth drummer. But this one was on Gar. Shows how important the drummer’s role is in music. A drummer carries and signals the band in order for everyone to be in sync. Gar slept on them more than once, but it was funny seeing them turn to him and just waiting like “please drum man”. Rest in peace Gar.
Poland started the rhythm riff at the same time, though, as did Ellefson. You can hear the chugging on the E note start right when Dave hits his first note of the solo. I think this one was on Gar.
That's a shirt Mustaine wore at that time...but, look closely, it has one of those 'Ghostbusters' circles around the swastika meaning it's an anti-Nazi shirt.
I now understand Dave's stance on the drugs in Megadeth during this era. Completely blasted Dave could still pull off a flawless performance and didnt hock his equipment to get by. His bandmates.... well, just watch this vid to understand. Gar nods twice and Poland has trouble keeping in time. Dave was no fan of looking like amateurs so I see now why he went the way he did I guess
1:30 When Dave (after a "beer" session) looks at Chris (who is almost playing another song) who looks at Gar who looks at Dave who looks at Gar with a "are we still playing the same song guys???can we try to synchronise here???" look....LOL!! Completely wasted band who manages to pull off one of the hardest songs around....
It's strange how i find this entertaining despite it's obvious flaws. It's like seeing Usain Bolt run the 100 meters whilst fucked up on several different chemicals.
The difference between Dave and the other guys while doing booze... Dave could still do his part fine while being as high as a kite but the other guys were just a mess.
I love this shit. A sloppy, drug induced mess. But ruthless when they are on. The friedman/menza era is cake and ice cream compared to this. They were always sober and played on time, it sucked.
not saying anything bad about nick and marty, also RIP nick, but the lineup with chris/gar was just on another level, I feel like the first two albums cant be beat...
Jesus christ Gar is high as fuck... hes basically nodding during the entire song. He legit stops playing like 3 times during the first half of the song
Idk what the hell is going on (I guess someone is high as hell) because the drums messed up the whole thing and the guitars are also a little bit off, like it was unplugged or some weird echo behind it.
