Eh... I do think she handles musicians egos fairly well but I think "ace interviewer" is questionable. She can truck through a segment even when the musician is giving her a bit of heat, which is a hell of a skill... but her research and depth of her questions are a bit whatever. By 90s MTV standards (or any MTV standards), yeah she's more competent than most, but I think she either has to ask to many canned questions or she has to interview too many different people all the time so she can't do proper research or she's just not great at conversational style interviews. The fact that she's not insufferably annoying definitely gives her automatic bonus points when compared to most MTV presenters of any era.
@nudesoftheworld
@nudesoftheworld 2 года назад
@@UnvisibleINK most interviewers ask canned questions, otherwise they run the risk of the interview becoming antagonistic, especially when she was interviewing rock stars at festivals and there had been plenty of documented interviews when these rocks stars have not been in complete sobriety, the Dimebag Darrell interview for one. Also many interviews when, as you say it being the 90s, the person being questioned would make the replies sexualised and inappropriate - Hetfield and Pete Steele to name but two. Also, as the American equivalent at the time was Riki Rachtman who notoriously started or fuelled the flames of feuds between him and the interviewed (the Dave Mustaine incident springs to mind), she did well not to take things personally and as you rightly say, didn't let their egos be a personal attack. She also gave a depth to how little female interviewers in that field were being appreciated. She was years before Mary Anne Hobbs at the BBC and she probably had the proverbial axe hanging above her at the studios to have a standby male alternative replace her at the first sniff of trouble. As volitle at 90s Rock was, it was documented well on Headbangers Ball UK and mostly down to her. So yes I stand by my point, she was an ace interviewer. I don't think Martin Bashir would have had the same vibe.
@UnvisibleINK
@UnvisibleINK 2 года назад
@@nudesoftheworld I think you may have misconstrued my statement into something more negative than was intended. I wasn't intending to disagree with you, rather I was suggesting that you were being somewhat liberal with the term "ace interviewer" specifically. She's a perfectly serviceable interviewer but her strengths seem to be more as a TV presenter/host. The art of the celebrity interview (prying profound new information and insight out of noteworthy people) is not her best asset. As I said though, it's hard to say whether this was down to her or if it's down to the dumbass superficiality of MTV executives not utilizing her full potential. We may never know. But just to clarify, I totally agree that she was one of the few strengths of MTV during that period. She wasn't as cool as Mike Judge or the Liquid Television crew, but she held down the fort for Headbangers Ball just fine. I'm just being a bit protective of how one defines an "ace interviewer", but I certainly didn't mean to rub you the wrong way over it.
@nudesoftheworld
@nudesoftheworld 2 года назад
@@UnvisibleINK I completely agree and thank you for such a robust reply. My colloquiallism of 'ace' is from when we all recorded this in 1995 from MTV and passed around to our friends who didnt have Sky. I suppose its a piracy in its infancy but still, they'd take 13 year olds to court if they could, but I guess it is vague in its application. MTV in the 90s was like the old Frank Zappa addage that 'I'd rather work with fat guy, cigar smoking squares who want to take a risk on something they know nothing about than their jumped up children who know even less' - you're completely correct that MTV was guided by the corporate heartless and in years only proved to become worse and worse. She probably did have her faults. I've in recent months seen that the professions shes moved onto have come under fire and shes been criticised. My like of her is purly from nostalgia and, I'm not sure about you, but if I were up against a snotty Dave Mustaine on a Manhatten building I dont think I'd play it off as cool as she did. XD And yes, they don't come much cooler than Mike Judge.

Oh my God, today I saw a video "From The Vault" of Megadeth, shot in 1990 with THE ONE AND ONLY LINEUP starring, and now I'm watching a video from the 1994, still at that time with the lineup unchanged, fortunately for us, for the another next four years to come. But you know what? Nick looks here already very sick, still has his teeth though. Nonetheless, meth have had already taken a heavy toll on him even though it's just been four years between those two recordings. R.I.P. Nick.

@ Shelby Avant Right!? Countdown/Black Justice/Rust I became a fan of both of them at “and justice for all” and “rust in peace. I recall anticipating the video premiere of both and being a little let down when they dropped. I thought the next albums would be heavier versions of the previous and both were much more poppy and mellow. I grew to love and appreciate them for what they were, but it was interesting the alignment of those four albums. Among the Living, Rust in Peace, And justice for All and Seasons in the Abyss were IMO the pinnacle of those bands in terms of Heavy/Melodic.

Iron Maiden are a case in point, one boring album after another since 1990....

I am not sure Marty Friedman got more freedom in Youthanasia. Looking at the making of and all previous videos about the band, it seems to me Mustaine let him all amplitude for the solos. Rust in Peace solos are full of Marty's magic, Persian scales and stuff. I think Marty Friedman has had the confidence to put his mark since the day he joined and Mustaine was smart enough to understand that guitarist is one of a kind. Youthanasia is actually not as rich in solos as the two previous albums. I remember when I bought the album in 94 I really liked the rhythmic guitars and melodies but I was left a tad disappointed with the solos. They were much shorter solos that emphasize and complement the rhythm guitar and on the last track of the album there is actually a sort of re-rendition or reedit of all previous solos but there was not a solo that stomped its mark as the Youthanasia solo. RIP and Countdown had their solos plenty in comparison. In Cryptic Writings, the solos are again short and effective but we are not as much in RIP and Countdown territory where the two guitarists go into a solo battle a la High Speed Dirt which is a shame. I think Marty Friedman's fatigue might have come from here. In the later albums of the late 90s, there was no room for a memorable solo like the absolute World classic in Tornado of Souls. Not many guitarists have created a solo that regularly make the Top 5 of best solos of all time in all magazines. So Mustaine had found the best guitarist of all heavy metal band no doubt.

Cryptic Writings was not even remotely a miss, given that Trust is the number one highest charting Megadeth single of all fucking time and the record sold through the roof as well. Now the follow-up to CW, Risk, didn't play well with fans and only went gold I think. You might call that one a miss like most people do.
