My first Mega Maker stage, based on Castlevania Symphony of the Night. It's a full Metroidvania where you collect powers to progress farther in Shademan's massive castle. You can find secret optional powers to make the many bosses easier. This stage took me hours, so if it looks interesting try it out before watching the entire video.

If the stage music could dynamically change with the location of the map, that would just make this a 10/10.

Dynamic music came out in a future update after I had already finished the stage. Different music would have added a lot to the atmosphere for sure.

This is INCREDIBLE. I, like many who commented, have been wanting to make a Metroidvania level but this will be hard to top. The SOTN vibes make me wanna play it again.

It's abundantly clear this isn't your first go-round with level design. For instance, no ordinary level creator would have thought to use distinct wall textures for places where Concrete Shot / Super Arrow are intended to be used. I tip my hat to you. An absolute masterpiece from start to finish.

I remember thinking about the concept of a Mega Man metroidvania when I was a kid…, with a dark tone and a feeling of decay and fatigue in a story entailing Wily’s last stand in a labyrinth bunker and a lot of returning robot masters who talk before they fight.

Funnily enough, I had a concept of a Megaman X one where the main character could absorb the chips of fallen enemies to power himself, taking the Aria of Sorrow's soul mechanic and expanding it into something more complex.

This is very well made! A lot of interesting and useful special weapons, some cool puzzle elements, and the aesthetic is done wonderfully. I was initially surprised that Rain Flush was Shademan/Dracula's weakness, but given how effective Richter's hydrostorm is in the opening of Symphony of the Night, I suppose it does make a lot of sense.

Thanks for the kind words. In order to obtain his weakness, I placed this boss really out of the way. If this hidden move was found, the player earned the right to skip the final boss. I figured a screen nuke would be the most OP way take out Shademan. HOWEVER, I'm glad there is lore that works with my decision. 😁

I love the inspiration taken from Megaman 8 stages! Probably my third favorite game in the Classic series. Always felt like it was underappreciated.

I spent a good chunk of this going "why didn't you try XYZ? (mostly Tornado Hold)" in my head. Obviously the answer was "because I made the level and am just showing it off", but this indicates that it certainly does its job.

I tried hard to test the stage so there were no skips and you HAD to use certain powers when needed, but I had no play testers. By the time I finished, I memorized the stage and robotically played the way I had intended. If someone sent me a video of their playthrough and completely broke my stage, I'd love it.

Again I say the devs should have the ability to scale boss damage attack speed maybe even pattern percent and health because a cool level like this fell flat because boss. It would be cool if you could even give more forms or maybe after boss defeated causes trigger so you could potentially do a one room gauntlet. It's a shame - great gameplay on your end Ant :D

In most of these genres of games. You need a suit to jump and move around well in water. I'd be interested in seeing a waterborne character that needs to find a varia suit essentially to move in a dry space.

Megaman network transmission on GameCube is the closest a metroidvania style game we’ll ever get. But worth checking this concept again.

I’ve always thought the mega man series should have been considered part of the metroidvania genre, like castlevania they started as action platformers with a few rpg elements and by the time of the. Z/X games were basically fully there.

Did you know you can get to Pharaoh Man without the Super Arrow? You can do it all with propellers and concrete. The "hard" check right before him can be bypassed by placing a propeller right on the ledge in front of you, so the wind doesn't collide with the wall and you can ride it up to the next screen. I consider this to be to the map's benefit, as it gives it substantial branching paths, which are critical for a good Metroidvania. Anyway, great job on the map. My only real gripe is the column switch room is really obnoxious.

This was absolutely amazing. I loved how Hydro Storm was the OP weapon for the final boss. XD Is the ridiculously loaded E-Tank room actually accessible, or just a red herring?

I didn't even know MegaMaker was a thing! This looks like a ton of fun, but the game itself looks almost frustratingly easy. Needs more enemies, and if possible, Bosses with more health. The Bosses seem to go down way too fast before you even see what they can do (a staple in Mega Man games, but not very exciting when put into an open world format like this).

I looked at maps from the spriters resource of not only SOTN, but other castlevania games for idea locations and how the castle could connect. Figuring out which powers help you with traversal in Megamaker often helped me make the section around that power. Does it help me travel horizontally, or vertically? Make sure to know everything a power does! I found out you could stand on the Super Arrow wayyyy to late and wanted to cry! Had to change a good chunk of everything to accommodate that. Honestly, I was better with picking out pretty colored blocks more so then making compelling level design. I recommend using my level for aesthetic inspiration, but looking at other more skilled creators for better level design and gimmick usage. Good luck, would love to see your stage when done. 🙂

36:32 onwards is using Harmony of Dissonance rooms yeah? That and Aria of Sorrow are the only Castlevania games I've played though. I hope to make a metroivania style level (heck, maybe even a series using each character) and I now have some questions: any good ways to guide the player on where to go and when? And are there any damaging tiles that don't just kill you? That would be good to know if I actually do it. Regardless, this was really well executed, and I am recently trying out this amazing fangame. Have a good day/night!

In regards to guiding someone on the right way to go, I didn't really get to see other players play test my level. So I'm not even sure I was any good at guiding the player. My suggestion for level creation would be not to make things too difficult. If a part is hard for you (the maker who knows what's coming) then it'll be extremely hard (and not fun) for the player. For a metroidvania, these rules apply. Don't make the stage too maze like. Begin the stage linear and then slowly branch out. If I had ANY advice I wish I knew before I started, it would be to test out each power throughly. I didn't know that you stand on the Super Arrow until I was almost finished and had to change a big part of the stage. The powers in Megamaker each have a lot of utility, so throughly testing will help a ton preventing sequence breaking. I wish I had known the Skull Barrior let you walk on spikes, I would have used it for that reason. I think a good substitute for a block that hurts you would be the Megaman 2 Yellow force beam. I think that could work well. Thanks for watching! 🙂

Love the concept of megaman getting the metroidvania treatment. Project like this fills you with inspiration to make your own castle. I don't know the limitations of the megaman x maker but can does it allow you to edit the HP of the enemies?

Sadly, it doesn't. But I can say that the freedom you DO get it worth checking out even if you have the slightest interest. I wish others makers let you create such a large-scale stage.

Thanks! Sadly, the map is for Maker mode when creating the stage. Stages aren't really supposed to be this big in Megaman, so there is no map feature.
