Yes. It was this FIRST generation - CARL REINER who had the TRUE genius melded with poverty, struggle and humility. Rob Reiner, Meathead, on the other hand, just turned into a rich corporate Democrat, although SPINAL TAP was kind of his saving grace. Night and Day! that generation!
These guys were dynamite together !!! Reiner had the knack to ask Brooks about the most outrageous thing he could imagine and then there goes Mel, not only inventing an answer but backing it elaborating some crazy story that only he could ever come up with. Witness the way Carl laughs hearing an answer to whatever he initialy asked, being entertained himself by that 1-derful master of funny improvisation. Brilliant artists !!!
The way they could effortlessly go into a routine and just ad lib, truly remarkable and talented. These two shaped my sense of humor thanks to reruns of Get Smart, Dick Van Dyke Show and of course Mel's movies.
Laughter is the real secret to longevity. These guys were improvising faster than the crowd could keep up with and were probably twice their average age.
Wonderful Gentlemen…So FUNNY!! Comical Geniuses!! Comedy GOLD FOLKS!! Comedy GOLD!! ;] GOD BLESS Carl Reiner& Mel Brooks!! COMICS are So important…Helping to Keeps us all Sane in Trouble Times…Helping us all to Lighten the Load of LIFE ;] FUNNY FOREVER!!
Very naive comments about some of the greatest comics of all time (Mel Brooks, Jack Benny...). Ask the comedians of modern day i.e. JerrySeinfeld, and I'm sure that they will refer to the Mel Brooks's of yester-year as the primary inspirations for their comic genius.
Jordan Anderson: Forgive these people for they have no senses of humor. For some reason, they dont realize that they were improvising their routine ON THE SPOT. Sad, so sad.
Reading the Mel Brooks autobiography. These two guys had quite a career both together and separate. The story of how the 2000 Year Old Man came to be is a great one and it's crazy to hear that we the public almost never got to hear it if it wasn't for Steve Allen begging them to record it in his studio and if they didn't like how it went they could just toss out the recording. What's crazy is since this was for a show it was actually scripted. Normally they would just adlib trying to get the other to crack. Two of the best to have ever done it. We've already lost Carl Reiner. I dread the day we lose Mel.
I am laughing so hard I couldn't breathe! The first time I heard this Aideh joke I nearly killed myself laughing. In 6th grade I learned the tale of Radames & Aideh (however you spell it) Best version of Romeo & Juliette ever.
american comedy entered its adult age in the last 20 years. Before that, there was really very unfunny americans like bob hope, skelton or mel brooks who people idolized, but who were never remotely ingenious, not like the british were. Its only in the past 20 years with the emmergence of people like larry david, seinfeld, louis ck, chappelle, that the americans have surpassed the brits, but really before that there was only carlin, the marx brothers, hicks, and a whole lot of tumbleweed
This is one of the most ludicrous comments I have ever read. It's one thing to say that one doesn't care for a particular comedian, but to state that Bob Hope, Red Skelton and (for God's sake!) Mel Brooks aren't funny, well that's simply ridiculous.
What no Lenny Bruce? Andy Kaufman? (And I can't agree... Yes this bit for example is a bit silly, but stuff like Blazing saddles, Young Frankenstein are genius... And of course hundreds of other comedians you didn't name...)
It's a shame we feed on the divisiveness served up by the politicians, political parties, and the media, it turns people who should reason together into enemies. I think the Princess Bride is the greatest thing Rob has ever done, and for that creation alone, i love him.
