Mel Oliver was 13 years old when she was first diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2011. Seven months of intensive chemotherapy and surgery to replace her femur (thigh bone) and knee joint followed. After being blown away by the quality of care that she received, Mel set out to become a doctor.
Sadly, whilst in her first year at medical school, Mel was diagnosed with a recurrence of osteosarcoma in her leg. She was given five more months of a different, yet equally as brutal, chemotherapy regime, and an above-the-knee amputation at 19 years old.
