For anyone interested, 'Melancholy Blues' has a 32-bar Chorus that the band works through several times in this performance. But it also has a 16-Bar Verse, here played just once (01:15 to 01:47). The Band - like Louis Armstrong - plays the piece in the key of A flat. In most performances of 'Melancholy Blues' I have heard (here in England) the preferred key has been F - possibly following the example of Humphrey Lyttelton.

I wonder how Choe gets those septimal notes (C 2/3 flat presumably written as D 2/3 flat) on the clarinet (actually Marla plays this even earlier, but on trumpet/cornet/etc. presumably you just move a valve/tuning slide out a bit). Interesting that Haruka chooses NOT to do this when she gets the same opportunity (instead plays something like C 1/3 sharp), even though presumably any fractional sharp/flat would be very easy on the trombone as long as you didn't have to cross a slide extension wraparound point (not sure what you're supposed to call it when you get to the maximum extension of the slide and have to pull all the way in to play the note on the next lower member of the harmonic series).
Thank you James, another one to add to my 2023 FQF collection. I have noticed that the ladies have opened a number of their recent concerts with this number, is this now their signature tune or is it just a coincidence and is there any significance in its choice I wonder?
