RIP Melanie 💔 I grew up up listening that song. My mum used to try to hit the high notes in jest and we’d all laugh when it came on the radio. So much fun . Condolences to her family, friends and all the fans. The music lives on. RIP Melanie 🎼🎸❤️💔😪
i dunno, melanie never mentioned that in all the interviews she gave about this song. she did mention it wasnt a reference to anything specific, more about her drive and focus after her father was teaching her how to rollerskate and how she'd always fall when she realized he wasnt holding her. she remarked the freudian imagery of keys and dicks was pretty well-established, but just came to her ex nihilo.
Sadly! I also know! I wore out more saddle shoes, ( gawd I LOATHED those shoes, narrow feet so mom wouldn't allow anything else, except for church, I solved the issue by becoming a bare-footed hippie...) I couldn't wait to get out of school to put on my roller skates in spring, summer, fall, do you also recall FOUR DISTINCT SEASONS! I miss them. Winter, my other joy, my toboggan! Didn't wax my surf board, nope, in early September I was polishing up that "greatest invention since the wheel" . Those were the daze huh?! Nice to meet another Melanie fan. Namaste Z.
@@eightinches3671She was definitely a solo singer, but maybe not a solo artist. It’s of no real consequence though, her backing band was just there to provide the music over which she sang. It wasn’t even BBHC, so for all intents and purposes I think we can count her along the solo female singers.
RIP Thanks for sparking up my transistor radio Christmas morning 1971. I even got new skates that Christmas! A magical memory forever vivified by your song. ❤❤❤
As far as I know, Melanie had three children, a son named Beau and two daughters (whose names I don't know). Beau also was a musician (guitar) and performer, and he toured with Melanie in later years.
My parents named me Melanie, all because they loved this song and how happy it made them. I grew up to be a roller derby player so the song kind of fits.
That's a good reason to name you Melanie! I had a colleague years whose parents named her Connie because they liked Connie Francis. At least Connie and Melanie are sensible names.
Hi Melanie I too named my darling daughter Melanie after her she is 47 now & still to this day I dance round the kitchen to the album x beautiful name 🌸
The music is a masterpiece The piano is perfect The background vocals are incredible The maracas and bongos just hit the spot And her singing is the best part about it
I found this to be a surprisingly difficult song to perform well, but everyone loves it. We did a cover of this & I had to modify the last part since her vocal range is higher than mine (or at least, higher than what I can sing well in a live setting)
A big shout out to MotorMouth in the Morning for introducing me to this song. I'm sorry to hear that he went off air. I wish him best of luck taking care of his new twins and family through these challenging times.
I head a clip this morning. It was the last thing I heard before going for a 20 mile run with no headphones. That’s a long time with this song stuck in your head.
My SINCEREST prayers and condolences. Haven't heard this in years but I remember when it came out! Please remember all the good times with your mom and the more you think about her the easier it will eventually become but it takes time! So sorry for your loss.
When this was on Kids in the Hall recently I honestly thought this was a parody song for the sketch, and nope. A very real song that was a hit in a decade that predates me being alive. And it's actually pretty catchy.
Melanie was a great artist - have a listen to this in case you are interested: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IZ52lk9wjZI.html it's called Candles in the Rain and it's her tribute to Woodstock. I absolutely loved the Kids in the Hall sketch since I was so familiar with her music.
my aunt always loved this song. She’d always play it in the car and sing along to it in the most joyful, silly way. She died a few days ago, and this song just makes me feel so much safer. It’s crazy how much a song can cheer you up.
R.I.P. Melanie! You're the best singer and songwriter, you sang "Brand New Key", " People In The Front Row", "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)", etc. Hopefully you sang Brand New Key in heaven. Rest in peace Melanie!
I rode my bicycle past your window last night I roller skated to your door at daylight It almost seems like you're avoiding me I'm okay alone but you got something I need Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates You got a brand new key I think that we should get together And try them out, you see I been looking around awhile You got something for me Oh, I got a brand new pair of roller skates You got a brand new key I ride my bike, I roller skate, don't drive no car Don't go too fast but I go pretty far For somebody who don't drive, I been all around the world Some people say, I done all right for a girl I asked your mother if you were at home She said yes, but you weren't alone Oh, sometimes I think that you're avoiding me I'm okay alone but you've got something I need Well, I got a brand new pair of roller skates You got a brand new key I think that we should get together And try them out, you see Oh, I got a brand new pair of roller skates You got a brand new key

Rest In Heavenly Peace Melanie . This news is particularly sad for me & probably many other poeple. You were a joyous part of my childhood that made life really happy . A song my mother sang with us as children . It’s a sad day but your music lives on. ✌🏼🎼🎸😪💔
@Darr What an amazingly ignorant and unnecessary insult. If you don't like Men with bigger balls than your boyfriends you could just say so. Shut up and quit being such a little triggered rat.
@Darr What kind of a name is Darr by the way? Were you named by cavemen? You sure act like a neanderthal so that makes lots of sense now that I think about it.
I've got a brand new shiny helmet, and a pair of kinky boots I've got a lovely new flak jacket, a lovely khaki suit When we go on night patrol, we hold each other's hand For we are the British Army, and we're here to take your land
"Some people say I done all right for a girl", yes Melanie, you did. And with that line, you inspired more women musicians than you knew to rock harder, write more. Thanks Sister Muse.
My daughter just got a pair of roller skates! Ive been singing this song for a week now! Had to play this lovely tune for her ,she thought I made it up! Lol. She loves it!!!!!
How on earth do you explain to your daughter how roller skates used to have keys??? I'm old af and I used to roller skate when I was a kid and I still don't remember roller skate keys or understand what or why or how that was a thing?! (But I definitely remember this song, it is one of my fave songs of all time.)
My dad passed a couple years ago, and this was his favorite song. When I'm drunk, I come here and listen and cry. He wasn't the best dad in the world but he suffered from addiction. I blew him off the last couple of years he was alive and ignored his calls and what not. I'd do anything to go back and talk to him more. I miss him so much. So much.
Sorry for your pain. I did the same thing with my father: told him I hated him when he was dying. I meant it for the way he treated my mother, but I also love him very much.
Did you make your dad an addict? No, of course not: he made his choices and choices have consequences. That is what life is about. You couldn’t have changed him and his behaviors would have affected you had you not made the choice to move forward with your own life. As a parent, I can tell you I would never hold a grudge against my son for something like what happened with you. Don’t cry...sing along LOUDLY and remember what good memories of your dad you have. 🤗
Many people doesn't realize Melanie Safka was at Woodstock, she's an original hippie from the 60's. IMO, even though she was called a poor man's Janis Joplin, she had that special quiver to her voice that brings out the heart and soul. No one can sing this song like Melanie, but I will say Maddy Poppy does a great job from American Idol, and I'm sure she would agree there is only one Melanie. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanie_(singer)
She should have been a much bigger star. But with only three very well known songs, she left a serious legacy. The voice and talent will live on forever. We will miss you Melanie!
She was a pretty big star in her time. She was forgotten, though, because in those days all popular music had to be 'serious', and she had a playful streak, even in sad songs like 'Look What They've Done to my Song.'
My sincere condolences to Melanie's family and those close to her. I'm 83 and always enjoyed her music. My husband met her when she traveled through VT several years ago.
I drove my Sarsen through your garden last night I kicked your front door down around at midnight Something's telling me, boy, that you're avoiding me And when I find you, you will run for your tea Oh, I've got a brand new shiny helmet and a pair of kinky boots I've got a lovely new flak jacket and lovely khaki suit And when we go on night patrol, we hold each other's hands For we are the British Army and we're here to take your land My good friend Bertie, he's in the UDR Searching for weapons he will go near and far Up around by Kappa, you'd never find him there Oh, the only gun he'll get there is an Armalite in his ear Oh, I've got a brand new shiny helmet and a pair of kinky boots I've got a lovely new flak jacket and lovely khaki suit And when we go on night patrol, we hold each other's hands For we are the British Army and we're here to take your land My good friend Trevor, he's in the RUC But now they've handed him his redundancy Folks along the border won't be seeing him any more That provo sniper will be missing him for sure Oh, I've got a brand new shiny helmet and a pair of kinky boots I've got a lovely new flak jacket and lovely khaki suit And when we go on night patrol, we hold each other's hands We are the British Army and we're here to take your land My good friend Nigel, he's in the SAS He said a child is just as good as the rest But now they've gone and posted him way down to Crossmaglen He wished to blazes, he was back in jail again Oh, I've got a brand new shiny helmet and a pair of kinky boots I've got a lovely new flak jacket and lovely khaki suit And when we go on night patrol, we hold each other's hands We are the British Army and we're here to take your land My good friend Sammy, he's in the DUP An outstanding member, as all the world can see I said, "Go up to Donegal, if you want to have some fun" He said, "I'll take a run there, if I have nothing on" Oh, I've got a brand new shiny helmet and a pair of kinky boots I've got a lovely new flak jacket and lovely khaki suit And when we go on night patrol, we hold each other's hands We are the British Army and we're here to take your land I drove my Sarsen through your garden last night (sing up the 'ra) I kicked your front door down around at midnight (sing up the 'ra) Something's telling me, boy, that you're avoiding me And when I find you, you will run for your tea Oh, I've got a brand new shiny helmet and a pair of kinky boots I've got a lovely new flak jacket and lovely khaki suit And when we go on night patrol, we hold each other's hands We are the British Army and we're here to take your land We are the British Army and we're here to take your land
Melanie making bank from all of the royalities. First Boogie Nights, then Family Guy and now Kids In The Hall. Best runner sketch of the new season for sure. Hope Motormouth is doing okay wherever he is in his bunker.
Melanie can SING without a ton of digital crap making her sound in tune. The lyrics are intelligent and multi-layered. The music is harmonically interesting and structurally sound. This is played by real people with real musical instruments, not by a computer. This is genuinely catchy. Five factors that I really don't think apply to 99.9% of modern music.
“That was pretty impressive. I mean, it wasn’t a slam, but it was impressive. But this (points to wheelbarrow)... this is reeeaally impressive!” -Johnny Knoxville
wow thats exactly where i remember this song from... I was watching a random video someone sang those lyrics And knew I heard this before. It was from the Jackass movie

I used to listen to this song at the central Florida fairgrounds in the 60' s back when black people danced to white people music and visa versa, 60' s, 70's did that to people , brought people together, that's what we need today, get together music ❤️😎
In the early 90s my father and I used to go for back road rides on Saturday nights and listen to oldies. I always enjoyed this one and he would turn it up for me. My father passed away 8 years ago of cancer and this song always reminds me of him and puts a smile on my face, remembering the easier times.
