So sad... My husband went to high school with Melanie. She gave a concert and would always walk with a guitar on her back. As for me, being French born and now living on Melanie's territory in New Jersey, this is with this song we remember Melanie, for the French line "ils ont changé ma chanson." RIP and thank you.
Elle est super craquante quand elle prononce ces quelques mots en français avec son accent américain. C'était une grande artiste. Nul doute qu'elle charme dès à présent les anges avec sa voix et sa guitare.
Rest in peace, Mel.🕯You made a musical impression on our age. Tough to do, in a fickle industry where women were stigmatized & often dismissed. Thanks for songs that will always remind us all of what seemed like simpler times. ♡
I am a 22 years old girl from Turkey / İstanbul. I found an old record of her , named '' The Very Best of Melanie '' , in an old second-hand book store. I was interested because the girl on the cover ( Melanie Safka) was very beautiful and we have the same NAME ! :) I brought it to home and played it right away. This is just pure talent and the voice of an angel...You are a perfect artist Melanie Safka. Thank you for joining my life 💕💕💕
Just found out that Melanie has died, something made me to go and play her songs, then I saw R.I.P. OMG, I can’t believe she’s died. Loved her since the early 70s. You were one off the best. R.I.P. beautiful Lady. ❤️
I was born on March 23rd 1963 so I am now 60 years old I remember listening to Melanie on the radio when I was a little boy. I loved her songs. I had no idea that Melanie had left us. I only heard it through Johnny Walkers sounds of the Seventies programme yesterday afternoon 4th February. I was gutted and admit I had a tear in my eye. Go Bless You Melanie and may you rest in Eternal Peace.xxxx
There’s something about music from this era, it just holds it own no matter what. People won’t talk about 99% of todays music in 50 years time as it’s all repetitive and over produced and ultimately disposable.
I`ve been loving her music for more than 50 years..This is sad news!she sang about beautiful people and she sure was one of them!Goodbay...Love from Norway.
I'm age 76 same as Melanie . She never "sold out", neither have I. I feel privileged to have loved her music and her way of living. For my part, once a hippy always a hippy ❤
One of the most underrated musicians of the rock era...a lovely lady with a distinct voice...a lovely wife and mother...so many songs...rest in peace Melanie!!!
I was in NY in 2002 chaperoning my sons choir and saw that she was performing at a quaint distant club called The Turning Point. I had the other chaps cover for me and paid a cabby over $100 to drive through NY, then Jersey through the woods until we arrived to find out a bus took the same route for $4. I met Melanie and enjoyed her fantastic performance. What a voice!
you were in Piermont, NY. you got off of the Tapanzee, turned left on the main road, then made another left down a hill on some small road that faced the Hudson River. I saw Melanie perform at the Turning Point many times. She was always with her husband Peter and son Beau. She didn't seek fame or fortune, but she left at her mark with everyone she met. I remember one night a fan yelled out to sing "Angel of the Morning" and she said that it was Juice Newton's song. not hers and she sang it anyway. How many shows have you attended where you could talk to the talent and they respond back to you with kindness??
This goes out to my precious Mom who passed away the other day. She always held me up and backed me. She loved all four of her kids so much and would have done anything for us. I couldn't have found a better mom if I tried. I already miss you so much. So sorry you couldn't be here today. I know St Patricks always been your favorite day of the year. You were never a beer drinking so guess I'm gonna have to find me some Irish Whiskey and will take a shot for both of us to celebrate life and our family heritage. All of my love to you. Please always stay close to me, I still need you in my life so much. Both my Mom and my best friend always. We taught each other so much but you taught me so much more than anyone else. Thank you for introducing me to the best of music. It's helped carry me through life and hopefully it will help carry me through these last remaining years of my life. It's going to be so hard without you here with me but I'll try. I love you so much Mommy. This song has always made me think of you so from me to you, hope you are still listening. ❤❤❤
Why do people say no autotune? How would you know? All voices need pitch correction. Her last few notes were a little off but she is pretty. Gorgeous. I dint care about her singing. Im happy to just look at her.
There was no auto tune in 1971; the digital technology didn’t exist. The sound came from the set up ( the ubiquitous “ sound check”). How do I know? Because I was just out of a technical apprenticeship with Marconi in Chelmsford and working as a sound technician for the BBC; my first job.
@@travis8665 They say "no autotune" because "Autotune" was introduced in 1996. The keen observer will note that 1971 was a few years BEFORE 1996. 🤦♂️P.S. As YOU said: "Her last few notes were a little off..." THAT is THE POINT, it's a natural, non "processed" recording. PS: Fun Fact; She looks just like my mother. Although my mother would be 10 years older. (1937 vs 1947). So I'm actually here for the music, LOL.
I was 19 when this song came out. She was such a child of the earth. You couldn't help but love her. God bless all that were there then and are listening now.
I'm almost 19 in June. And I wish I could've seen her then. I wish I could've seen those days. I'm not the kid to say I was born in the wrong time because of the hate that saying gets. But then elder people say it's sad my generation will never see or feel what life really was like. How it was to live. Be young wild and free. But I really wish I could've felt the way life was. Living more free. No phones. No computers. School wasn't online. The government was more for the people by the people. And not for the government by the government like today. 40-60 cents for a gallon of gas. Seems pretty good to me. People saw you as your appearance. Not some online status that you're know as by people you don't even know. Being able to walk around and not care what people see you as. Because everyone was different. And themselves. Not trying to be someone else.
I WAS ALSO 19 CRAZY WE WERE LISTENING TO THE SAME MUSIC, I WAS FIGHTING A WAR AT THAT AGE I'M SURE YOU WERE TOO HOWEVER MANY YEARS HAVE PASSED I'M MUCH WISER NOW BUT THE SONG IS STIL THE SAME - GREAT
Loved Melanie since I was in h.s...I saw her at the bottom line in NYC and just knew that if I had a baby girl, her name would be Melanie💜💜💜my beautiful Melanie is now 31 and I have been so blessed!🩷🩷🩷
I work at a large Commercial Insurance Agency. Last year there was a contest and whoever won got to choose the music that played over the PA system. Basically they got to pick which station. Our C.O.O. won and he picked a really esoteric station that plays a lot of unusual stuff. This song played today and brought back all kinds of memories from my childhood.
Rest in Peace beautiful woman with the big big heart!!! Best voice!!! This is my most favorite of all your songs for the very words It was the only thing I could do half right and it turned out all wrong Ma. I thank you!! I sure cried when I read the news. Your memory will indeed be a blessing!!
This is the first I've heard this song. My boyfriend recently passed and I've been cleaning out his things. In the closet was a box of letters from his first real girlfriend in 1970, and a few written by him that were never sent - of the break up/ it won't work variety. One contained the line "Look what you've done to my song!" (Yes, I read some of the letters). That one line summed up pages of love and grief. Glad to have found it on RU-vid.
Was half crazy till Melanie let me know it wasn't me or her, it was those in power... ...miss those days, now, miss you too Melanie...guess I'll hear you singing in the wind blowing in the trees...
This was my favourite song in 1970/71. I’d spent years of being sexually abused by Catholic Brothers and a Priest at a NSW Australian boarding school and under the dreadful pressure of a Mum who had Narcissistic Personality Disorder. I made the decision to leave Australia for a Government job in Australian administered Papua New Guinea. Melanie’s song voiced words that spoke to how my life (not song) had been wrecked and gave me inspiration that I could make “everything alright”. I did. It took many years, study and professionally qualified, before I reached happiness., Lived around the World but happily back in Australia now. In my 70’s now and still listening still listening to and loving Melonie’s songs! Thanks Melonie!
Hi Melanie. Warm greetings from Australia 🦘 Thank you for the memories. Lay Down was also a classic. You are and always will be a STAR. I hope you're well. God bless you Melanie.
@@jon2849 thank you Jon. She died too young. How uncanny. I only just plugged into Melanie Safka last night via RU-vid. She died 24 January at 10pm. It is 25 Jan today as I write this. In any case, she was beautiful. If only we could all have that spirit. Take care and good luck. Big year for US elections in 2024. She won't miss that!
Rosemary Connell It doesn’t matter what mood u mite be in whenever u hear this u just start singin along dont ya.? I can’t speak a word of french but my tune sounds right so that’ll do
I just read the news, and I am sitting here crying listening to Melanie as if I might lose her if I don't. I know, though, that she will never be forgotten, and I say farewell but not goodbye. RIP dear lady.
For me, a teen in the era of this song, it still is about that era. There was no dominant style. We had folk, we had rocknroll, we had jazz, and so on. No one knew where it would go. That was a special time.
I am so heartbroken to have just heard of Melanie's passing. A brilliant songwriter and singer. Your music was part of my childhood, Melanie....such great memories...rest in peace sweet angel.
@@HAL-9000. Ich antworte in deutsch: Melanie kam in mein Leben und Herz ❤ in einer aufregenden Zeit, da war ihr Song und ihre Performance das was ich brauchte. Die Sängerin ist so authentisch.
RIP🙏🌹Melanie😢 I saw you, for years, with your son in a concert in Dortmund, Germany. So lovely, so great. Thanks for your music😊now you can sing with the angels ❤❤
I love her and her voice - so gorgeous, lush, and strong - but that vibrato isn’t my jam. I know some folks just have the rapid-fire kind…but my ear doesn’t care for it. Also don’t like super-slow vibrato ala Callas. LOL sorry…it’s literally just personal taste. 😁
Melanie gave so much and many great songs over these 50 plus years. A time rich with memories. I pray that she has an even bigger audience filled with angelic voices! Your love and passion carries on!
You were a nice bit of my childhood, my dad would play this song and leftover wine for me when I was a little kid. I'm now set to graduate in June. I just got one of your albums on vinyl the other week, I think I'll give it a listen. Thank you for all of the memories. -Dolpan
Chris Bradley It is not silly it is truth. Democrats are very destructive. Just look at how much better we are today under Trump in spite of all the lies from Democrats. They have become bat shit crazy.
@Mrs T Right. That's the problem - plastic bags. If we could just make them go away. Why I think Republicans and Democrats would love each other again. Muslims and Christians - they'd be dancing partners. Rich and poor people would share the same neighborhoods. Men and women would see eye to eye on every issue.
I’m only 51…discovered her in 1989 and fell in love with her voice and message. We need more of her today in this troubled world. Goodbye and farewell sister!!
Not, perhaps, one of the greatest guitar performances of all time... BUT certainly one of the most fabulous vocal performances of all time! And certainly a classic video of one of the truly great live musical performances of all time! 'Onya Melanie! Love you forever! 😁
@@fractuss No... I do realize that... but it certainly doesn't detract from a performance either! Btw, I wasn't knocking Melanie... far from it! (What part of 'one of the truly great live musical performances of all time' did you not understand?) 😉
It’s a comfort to know that many from the current generation are discovering all this wonderful art. And, as much as their contemporary music is a part of their modern lives, the artistry, storytelling, vocals and musicianship of our generation’s stars is making quite an impact, and many converts, to genres they’d never have known, but for their reactions. It’s a pleasure to relive these performances and share their excitement upon first-hearing.
Lay Down, Brand New Key, Beautiful People, Look What They’ve Done to My Song, etc. Wow! Such unique songs! Haunting melodies, sung with such a passion. There was a fascinating innocence, and childlike quality about the music. Watching her sing, Melanie sparkles with those beautiful eyes. Honestly, it’s like musical, and visual perfection! No gimmicks, no simulating sex, no diversion from a talentless act( we know who they are). Just mesmerizing talent.
R.I.P. Melanie. You have given us such beautiful songs. After many decades they still are touching me to the heart. Thank you so much and farewell Melanie. Enjoy a beautiful journey
When you see the great JANIS team up and send us all your song 🎵 from HEAVEN. Thanks for the beautiful memories you were truly blessed. Many here in Scotland love ❤️ You.
Find a French pop singer, Alizee in her prime, the song is Jen Ai Marre, she's dancing while singing in all black with two guitar players, quite possibly the prettiest woman I ever saw.
Oh I was a 6 year old boy at 71 🙂 Thanks God, these times the radio played good songs lot of years, and this songthey played a verry long time - maybe more trhe 10 years. In Bavaria. And I love the song so much. During all the times. Thank YOU!
Dear Melanie, I can remember when this song was released in South Australia, I worked at Levi Strauss then as a young boy. When this came on the "wireless" everyone, all 200 people knew every word and mouthed it along with you singing. Thank You for making my day. Cookey, Australia.
I was 1 in 191 but I remember that song in my childhood, and I love to remember my childhood , it was a good time with a lot of good music !!! Thanks for show us !
i first heard this song in the early 90s. i bought a cheap cd of mixed 60s 70s music from a garage i lost the cd in a move. i didn't know the artist or the song name, after countless attempts to find the song and goolge searches over 20 years I thought this would be just a vague memory. And today it pops up randomly on you tube along with her rendition of ruby Tuesday. long live the algorithm.
Melanie...class act!!! I was 13 when I bought this 45. And still have it!! A Brand New Key has always been a fav of mine. Melanie I would have gladly went skating with you anytime. Still loving you after all these years. Thank you from my heart.
@@kernriver1967 my brother was over there..he came home but not for long , agent orange got him we're from Oklahoma , isn"t Kern River in California? Just curious . take care God bless. bye Katy
@@UncaDave Out of those, Judith had the most amazing voice. Hopkins and Mary Anne Faithful were terrific stylists. If you look at other genres you can include Peggy Lee, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin.
One of the brightest lights shining in a pretty dark and disturbing world! Rest in peace, beautiful soul and spirit! You are now back with the love of your Life and hubby Peter! Peace, dearest Melanie! You were and are the bestest of the best!😢🙏🕊️🥀✌️
