I am a retired scientist, I have been taking melatonin for around thirty five years. It has slowed down my rate of aging so much that at a recent visit to my doctor the secretary assumed I had taken a younger person's identity and accused me of being a criminal.
I work in a health food store, and my coworker had listened to a study that talked about melatonin being taken during the day. I have never like the effects of melatonin as it makes me groggy the next day. So my coworkers and I took it around 1 o'clock in the afternoon. We work in an office with no windows. We noticed an elevation in mood, calm and relaxed during stressful issues going on, plus the best sleep we had experienced in a long time.
I've been taking 3mg for 30 years. A few years ago a sleep expert on Joe Rogan said Melatonin has no affect on sleep so I stopped taking it. Three weeks later I had trouble sleeping so I started taking it again and I sleep great.
My husband suffers from severe insomnia,I gave him few of my pills of melatonin and he was sleeping great Just taking one pill 2 hours before going to sleep Finally I had persuaded him, he bought the bottle of it for him self He feels refreshed, not giving him drowsiness like some other sleeping pills 🫰😴💐
Melatonin can also take your aging hair from white to back to the natural color that it was when you were younger. It would take about 6 to 9 months but if you take it without stopping it will help
I've been taking melatonin since 1995 and I'm 68 years old I gave up alcohol and marijuana. I never got Covid and haven't been sick . Only gone to a dentist😂
I am a retired canadian citizen in my 70s and enjoying a very active and healthy life. I have been taking Melatonin since decades basically while traveling to handle jet leg but since last over a decade i take Melatonin 3mg or 5 mg daily at night and i am feeling perfect as far as my health and fitness is concerned. You guys made my day as lot of people including my kids were apposing this. Thanks and regards.
Melatonin is a miracle. My mum suffered dementia with anxiety with sleeplessness and this was the only thing that helped her sleep. A few years ago it was very cheap. Now the pharma business have realised that is a gold mine and raised the price unfortunately.
My dog had bald spots on his sides from a vitamin D deficiency. He is an English bulldog who can't cool himself well and we live in a hot climate in southeast Louisiana so he doesn't get much sun most of the year. I have been giving him a couple of mg of melatonin at night and his bald spots are no longer there. I have been giving it to him for the last few years and it has worked great
I had a Bichon that always got that hair loss in the winter. I live up north where she didn't get a lot of sun from December through March. It's called "idiopathic flank alopecia". Common in Bulldogs. When she would spend more time outside in the sunlight in the spring the hair would grow back. She didn't start up with the hair loss until she was close to ten years old. I didn't supplement her with anything as it didn't seem to bother her. It just looked weird, so I'd clip her down short and put a sweater on her.
I've been using melatonin for 20 years after following and still study the research by Prof Russel J Reiter, world renowned melatonin investigator and others. I started with 5 mg daily and gradually upped it over the years to 100mg and occasionally 1000mg. Melatonin is an amazing ancient molecule. It's key to understand that blue wavelength at night shuts down endogenous melatonin within 1.5 seconds. It is important to block blue light at night within 1 to 2 hours of bedtime from sources such as computers, cell phones, white light, and streetlights.
Review the work of Dr David Blask of Tulane. His research shows how melatonin can temporarily change a cancer cells into a normal phenotype, thus slowing the rate of cancer growth dramatically, sometimes even shrinking it's size.
As a four times cancer survivor I am guarded when it comes to taking melatonin. I became aware that it actually sped up my cancer process, that particular cancer was receptor negative. I feel Melatonin has its place in lowering body inflammation, pain and in aiding sleep quality, but it aided my cancer cells to survive if not become more resilient, I believe the right dosage may be more important than we think, and should be calculated based on individual differences in metabolism and other biological data and health conditions past and present. Anyone with cancer should also be guarded on taking MSN, also quite beneficial, but if you have or have had cancer it can aid cancer progression/spread or re-ignition of a sneaky little dormant cell, just waiting in the wings for the right catalyst. People need to do their own research and take their individual differences into account before taking something they know little about. Monitor yourself closely when taking something, then pay close attention to what your body is telling you.
Thank you for sharing your story with us. It will definitely help some of us 🙏🏼❤️ if you don’t mind me asking, why do you think that melatonin was what sped up your cancer? What do you think it’s in it to do that?
I just learned about autophagy. If interested in how that can help you with those bad cells, then please look it up. I first heard about it from Dr. Boz.
@kirra- hi. Registered Nurse here. 👋🏽 please look up a man named Joe tippin. He had 5 cancers and failed traditional treatments. He posted on fakebook and a veterinarian contacted him saying he was cured of all 5 cancers by taking fenbendazole- an antiparasitic medication!!! Please look this up. Big p HARM a won’t allow this information!!!
Very, very strange. It sounds like you just want to instill fear of cancer in people in relation to melatonin. But in fact, an increasing number of studies have described the anticancer effects of melatonin! Search in Google: "melatonin and cancer" and you will be surprised. Can you cite any studies, articles, or anything that supports your claims? What is your real agenda here?
I had lifetime severe migrains that was destroying my quality of life and melatonin turned my life around. The sinus inflammation that woke me up at 4am almost every morning with a migraine slowly went away since 2017 after starting the supplement. I don't have them anymore, but if I do miss taking at least 5mg at night I will start to get some of that pressure coming back. I found an old RU-vid video from2012 tmj doctor talk about this taking the inflammation off the nerve and it caught my interest. Life changer for me for sure.
I’ve taking melatonin 20 mg every night. I didn’t know about anti aging benefits but it really help me sleep better for sure! Great information you shared. I know I’m unable to sleep without taking it but I don’t feel bad anymore. Thanks!
Been taking Melatonin since I was in my mid 30's, I'm now 66. I started out with the 3mg every night, it was a life saver for me because it would take me 2 hrs every night to fall asleep I would wake up around 2 am ( went to bed at around 10 or 11pm ) then it would be another 2 hrs or so until I finally would fall asleep again and it ALWAYS turned out that I would fall asleep and it seemed like right after I would fall asleep the alarm would go off. This happened every night & morning, if not for Melatonin I really have no idea what would have happened to me. But now I'm up to 20 to 30 mg's a night ( for the last 5 yrs ) plus an Ambient, I really have not experienced any side effects that I have read about. I have been tested for that sleep thing when you stop breathing, I don't stop breathing at night. At any rate I will be coming off that stuff and see what happens. If it has any effects on aging and your Mitochondria I don't feel it or see it in my physicals and labs.
I've been using melatonin supplements for a while, but recently I stumbled upon the benefits of tart cherry extract, and it's been a game-changer for me! What's fascinating is that tart cherries naturally contain melatonin, and incorporating them into my routine has had a noticeable impact on my sleep. 🍒 I love that it's a natural source. For those who, like me, are always on the lookout for more holistic approaches, tart cherry extract is worth considering. Plus, it's not just about melatonin - the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties in tart cherries make it a double win for overall well-being!
A note to both of you. I am a relatively healthy 91 yr old male. I started taking Melatonin supliments at about age 45. I have taken 1/2 miligram daily simply because it is not possible to get 300 Microgram tablets which is what the body might generate itself during sleep. I am absolutely convinced that this regime of Melatonin has contributed to my continued good health.
I bought 10 mg tabs and will grind them up into a fine powder and weigh it to get down to about .3 mg because like Dr P. it has me waking up at 3 am as a 70 yr old. Cherries have it but I dont eat them often.
Melatonin occurs naturally in plants, like Lavender buds and the tips of Mulberry leaves, about 3/4's " of the tip I use. I think Melatonin is considered to be one of the 7 Sirtuins.
I have been using over a gram of pure melatonin topically with dmso for months. I have used up to 3.5 grams without any major side effects. Doses of 2-3 grams were as effective for me as otc cold/flu medications for dealing with symptoms. Melatonin exerts strong effect on thymus. I am aware doses of up to 6 grams being used via IV in conjunction with chemo. Also it's infrared light that induces higher natural production of melatonin. Sunlight is a stimulator of melatonin production along with other forms of light that have infrared spectrum in it like incandescent bulbs, bonfire, candle light, etc.
Alot of comments about where to buy plant melatonin….Dr Hyman recommended one about a year ago which I’ve been taking called ‘Herbatonin’ the brand is Symphony Natural Health. It has alfalfa in it as well which I’m allergic to but I take it anyway because it’s the only plant version that I’ve heard recommended by a trusted doctor and it’s probably a small amount. If anyone has tried another brand do tell!
Wonderful discussion, thank you. At about 40 minutes, the discussion went to watching TV or working on a computer at night. So most computers now have a "night mode" which eliminates blue light. I also read before going to sleep and I use a hygge light (pronounced hoo ga) which is a pleasant yellow/orange light.
I hope that you can interview Russel J. Reiter who has his name attached to over a thousand melatonin research papers and has written a textbook on melatonin. I take 60 to a 120 mg(not mcg) in divided doses daily, then cycle off it for awhile. I am 70 and melatonin at this dose enhances sleep quality - but not duration. The most profound effect is from the 30 mg I take when I awaken in the morning which provides a noticeable sense of enhanced well being which puzzles people who think of melatonin as a sleep hormone...but is consistent with Reiter's research showing that 95% of the melatonin in the body is produced in the mitochondria in the daytime in response to infrared light stimulation.
Interesting. I will look into Russel J Reuter’s work. Thank you. I’m amazed that you can take such high doses. Can you recommend your source of melatonin? Do you know where to purchase phyto melatonin?
@@mal5669 I think at my dosage, synthetic sublingual is the most cost effective way to go.I have a cancer client taking 210 mg daily in divided doses and Reiter has experimented with gram amounts on himself with no side effects. An LD 50 (lethal dose) has never been found for melatonin in animal testing.
I very much respect Dr. Reiter's research on melatonin, thank you for the mention. I included some of it in the paper we wrote. He has truly contributed much to the research, as has Dr. Paolo Lissoni, who did extensive work on cancer over the past three decades.
@@foodandspirit Baffled that Reiter's research and ideas get so little traction in the health space (positive OR negative).Would say the same for Dr Khavinson and his research and opinions on bioregulator peptides (2 to 4 amino acids long).
Melatonin has helped me get off Trazadone , I even will take it during the day if feeling anxious. I take 10-20 mg a day, have taken as much as 40mg. I am also healing from Lyme/MS and it seems to help with inflammation as well. I also take high doses of Vit D.
My understanding is that melatonin inhibits estrogen synthesis so I always avoided it. I’m looking forward to listening to see if that information is outdated and incorrect. Thanks for the video on a women’s health topic!
Great question. I have not seen any data on that particular interaction. I saw this study about the reverse situation (beta-estradiol inhibiting melatonin synthesis, done in sheep cells): pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34971752/.
Good presentation. I would have liked more discussion re melatonin and cortisol. I know it was touched upon, but melatonin has the ability to level out cortisol. Also, there has been some discussion around melatonin being a natural remedy for the treatment of anxiety and depression. Just my thoughts...
Ps to my comment below :- Might it not be better to use a little bit of infra red to stimuiate our own melantoin ? It's simpler , more straightforward, no messing with dosage, no contamination or side effects as with buying supplements etc & a small lightbulb for use on face for example, would be cheap and easy and a pleasant way of getting your dose daily
In dealing with my long haul COVID (Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS CoV-2 Infection) my research has shown that the virus attacks the mitochondria and endothelial. Dosing with melatonin daily helps reset the sleep cycle that's disturbed by COVID (covidsomnia).
I took 10 mgs in early evening when I had covid but my sleep was still terrible with sore throat pain and coughing. Oh.....and living with five cats. Sleeping with nocturnal pets is stupid of me. Now I nap 1-3 pm a lot. I have sleep filth VS hygeine!
I find that daylight and sunshine as Vitamin D works better than a pill. However rainy days this month interrupt my sunshine. I have taken melatonin in the past and slept better but that was short lived for some reason maybe because i dont sleep in a dark room as have a salt lamp on. Might interfere with my circadian rhythm. So am interested in the podcast to learn more. Thank you for this information.
Ya might be a good effect for rainy or cloudy days. I think I need to find right probiotics to heal my gut and make more naturally. But melatonin is great antioxidant power so might not be a bad thing temporarily
I was able to drink a lot of coffee and still fall asleep until I got to be over 30. I couldn’t drink it when I was pregnant at 35 years old. I had to go off it completely ten years later. I developed sleep problems after 65 years old and have to use melatonin producing foods such as pumpkin seed flour and sleep patches to help me sleep.
Vit.D is light sensor ,melatonin is dark sensor.Melatonin scavenge 10 RO ,plant melatonin is more effective by inhibiting cox 2 inhibitors so anti inflammatory, phytomelatonin is 360 more effective than synthetic melatonin which is 99 percent in the market as supplements.
I have a male Miniature Pinscher who has been on 6mg daily of Melatonin for treatment of hair loss of unknown origin...his veterinarian recommended it & as long as he stays on it Rusty's coat stays healthy & what it should be for a Miniature Pinscher...I only stopped the Melatonin once for about 4 months....his hair started disappearing & becoming thin...I'll not stop the Melatonin again. He has been on it for several years now
I have an English Bulldog that had the same issue. He had a vitamin D deficiency because we live in a very hot climate and he can't be outside for more than a few minutes at a time most of the year. English bulldogs have a hard time with cooling themselves because of there squished face. Anyway, much of the melatonin is converted into vitamin D so I started giving him a few mg at night before bed and it cleared up within a few months. It's worked for 3 years now. Also, my wife and I are dog trainers and we've had a few clients that we have recommended this treatment to. They have all had success with it. One had been told by the vet that they thought it might be from bacteria or yeast, but the medicines they prescribed never helped so we told them about the melatonin and that worked great
I had a Yorkie who possibly has Cushings dusease. Her coat was very thin. Melatonin certainly made it grow thicker. ( I am 78 and my hair is pretty good too😉)
Since being a practicing nocturnist I couldn;t sleep by day. Now i work traditional day time hours but i sleep 1 or 2 hours max and wake up 6 times a nite. I tried Melatonin 1 mg for past 2 nites. Initially I slept 6 hrs. The next day i slept 5hrs. tonite is the 3rd day
Our integrative vet oncologist suggested melatonin for one of my dogs with cancer. I have never tried it but saw it in a formulation for GERD/acid reflux and considered trying it. However, my circadian rhythm is and has always been pretty flawless and wondered if adding in more might have a negative effect. Thanks for highlighting the difference between natural and synthetic melatonin. I think the contaminant of serotonin might actually be good for me lol..
@@seanogcon An oncologist told me that it is good for cancer and actually recommends it for certain types of cancer. Maybe it depends what type but I would look into it further.
All doctors talk circles because their pledge isn’t to cure anything, How on earth would they stay in business if they cured everyone? They give you meds to mask symptoms, they are not in the cure business.
I started taking melatonin at 10mg a night, worked up to 20 mg and did so for a week. At this point I increased my intake to 30 mg a night. At this level I was noticing an increase incidence of bruising/bleeding under the skin after bumping into or brushing against a hard surface. One other side effect I experienced after a scratch or cut was more bleeding than normal (delayed coagulation).
I am 68 and have taken Melatonin, Vitamin D³ and Biotean for more than 45 years now. I also take, over the last 5 years now, Zinc once a week. Why? I have found I always feel better, more relaxed. Today, I have better skin, nails and hair than most my age. My bones and joints are strong. I have Dietetic Type II issues. I have taken Metformin for probably the last 30 years. I personally think Melatonin also contributes to better cognitively. I feel sharper than most older folks my age orbolder, that I have met. Most people think I'm in my 50s. So, I contribute that to my regiment. As far as Covid, I refused to that that vaccine. I'm apposed to m-RNA manipulation as a way to attack a virus. The new idea of now putting m-RNA vaccines in food stock and plants has made me angry because it removes the choice from individuals on what they choose to put in their bodies.
I take melatonine for years due to having delayed sleep phase syndrome. I also have MS so it is good to know that it might help with that. I take 5 mg.
On a different note ... Try grounding. Just touch the ground with you bare foot or bare hand for 30 minutes a day. It must be grass, sand, unglazed rocks, or unpainted concrete. I just learned this and will try for myself too.
It’s not clear how one could find phytomelatonin that’s not artificially synthesized. Given that most melatonin products on the market are not optimal, I’m left with the question: “Should one take synthetic melatonin if optimal phytomelatonin formulations are not available?”
I was told melatonin is not really good idea to ingest rather to encourage the body to make its own by morning light exposure, evening light shutoff, thiamine, red light therapy if you can afford it, and strenuous exercise. Unless of course you can't exercise.
Does ingesting oral melatonin supplements actually reach the circulation as an intact molecule? Or should we learn how to increase our body's ability to produce melaton? In any case, I've recently started taking melatonin, D3, and magnesium glycinate in the evening... along with a dark room.
Can't remember which lecture I heard it in but the info was that taking vitamin d in the evening close to bedtime was the best for sleep. Seems counter intuitive on a very basic level but.... the Science was explained at the time and I've forgotten it!@@tamtamr9081
High dose of Melatonin like 100mg and above are used for treatment of some healrh condition and the report says even such dosages are quite safe to the body.
I am experimenting with 300 mg at night. So far it does seem to be helping me to sleep much better and through the night with more deep sleep according to my Garmin watch. I am concerned about discovering the source of my melatonin and whether it has phyto melatonin or not. I'm wondering how long I should take this high dose.
Dr Russell Rieter is the “godfather” of melatonin research. He has actually conducted the studies that has been cited over 100,000 times I would look at his work and listen to his interviews then go from there if I can in that big of a hurry bud.
@@janics6141 first off what is your point and secondly, did you read every paper and publication to verify that? The results were still the results. He is alive and mentally sharp late into his 80s.
coffee / caffeine can interfere or negate the effects of melatonin. i feel that melatonin helps me stave off hunger while fasting. theres lots of info regarding melatonin & liver detox out there.
I've been taking 3 mg and currently 9 mg. I found that it balances my circadian cycle. It creates the cycle. I took it 5 am and then after a while it bacame normal without taking it.i would go to sleep at 5
Can I take melatonin in the daytime or does it have to be at night? What dosage for anti inflammatory action? Are there any tests that measure melatonin levels in the body?
I just watched a brilliant discussion on this topic by Dr. Andrew Huberman, a neuroscientist from Stanford University . He discussed how melatonin seriously disrupts your brain chemistry, and adversely affects your overall physiology. He strongly advises against taking it. Do your own research, and don’t believe everything on the internet.
I'm not so sure. The nightmares might just be your sign that you're severely low in melatonin. I don't know why it happens. I use oral intermittently and I don't keep having nightmares. But I have had a few.
I started taking melatonin to help me sleep per my doctor. For some reason, I had adverse affects; nausea, severe dizziness and vomiting. Why is this please? Dr. said I may be allergic to melatonin. Thanks
Dr Minich Im 70 going on 71 yrs and sleep off and on.Sometimes Im a ake more than asleep. I eat healthy and excercise. I stopped melatonin because I read a study of the American college of physicians that said participants in a study developed dementia after taking it for 3 yes. That is 62 per cent of them. That is the reason I quit it. My doctor only recommends melatonin. I sure would like something safe I could take forever. Any ideas? My sometime insomnia is very difficult for me.
So what brand do you’re ommend as natural. I’ve tried5 off and on for years. I now 83 and totally dependent on over the counter sleeping pills or I don’t sleep. I dream if ido sleep on melatonin but I usually can’t sleep with it and if I doze off it’s a horrible degree of sleep.
What is the recommended milligrams to take during the day , not for sleep.? Right now I take it for sleep only. I’ve been getting purple blotches on my feet more so on right foot. I do not drink alcohol or smoke at all and never have. Can u advise me on all of this . Does melatonin help circulation?? I am overweight about 20 lbs and it is all in my stomach. Cortisol is high and has been high my whole adult life.
Carnivore is the best diet for human consumption. It contains all the nutrients that the our species needs and we evolved over at least 2.5 million years eating the meat of ruminants. Melatonin has to be natural. Plants contain oxalates that harm you.
I deleted everything I wrote about melatonin and ribosomal melatonin, they are completely different from each other. I could not take the comments. Shocking to learn none of you had any idea what I was talking about when I spent so much time carefully explaining it. I can't say would I should say. You all think it's so simple to the point that what all of you are saying is scientifically worthless. Not being mean. Why don't you all try to understand what melatonin and ribosomal melatonin are before you start writing what you think and you are so far off base that you embarrass yourself. Do some homework yourself before you waste another person's time. Actually take the time to learn some biochemistry if you like the subject. All the comments are random and everyone is lost.
