A viewer asked me if they should be practicing the way they are now, and I decided to share what I have learned thanks to an insightful lesson I had last week with ‪@Druggedfox‬...

This is true for a lot of things. I play chess and many people think you just need to play over and over to get good, or grind puzzles and learn openings to get good, and completely neglect analyzing their losses.

Armada said a very similar thing about improvement and there is even my soccer coach that said a similar thing about ''performing, analyzing and adapting''. I think this tip should be the most common answer to anyone that wanna get good at something

Vod review should be courage because of how much courage it takes to see how bad you really are

I think this concept applies to things other than Melee as well! For instance in Magic the Gathering I think most people spend a lot of time on solo practice ("goldfishing") a medium amount of time playing, and literal zero time on match review. Though playing and match review are linked because it is easier to think back on a match in a turn-based game without actually watching a recording.

Once you have enough hobbies you realize getting good at stuff is the same process almost everywhere! The variables are different but the formulas barely change

Post-Genesis, I've definitely gotten more drive to get better at Rivals -- & by extension melee, since I'm still very much in the "my hands don't do what my brain wants" beginning stages. And this is a very helpful framework for practicing, especially VOD review. Definitely something folks don't do enough, but as you mention, sometimes it's just a matter of breaking down particular moments. A lot of cool moments from the tourney that I wanna dissect and see what the players were doing in several key moments and see how I might be able to incorporate that into my own gameplay -- which means I gotta both grind out the execution on my own then actually pressure test it in matches. The Tri-Force at work. Also, shoutouts to KoDoRin since he mentioned this exact same concept as one of his most important concepts on his "Melee Improvement Tier List" video a while back. Each component of this idea is useful on its own, but definitely gotta balance them out to get the full effectiveness out of your practice time.

Take advantage of what's around you. Use Slippi unranked to learn, not win. Put your ego aside. Let the other player "lol" you. If you try out stuff and get 4 stocked who cares? Sometimes you need to fail to see how things really work. You always have to be willing to lose to learn how to win. We all should be excited about online to get better. I would've killed for this when I first started playing the game. Also, always remember: A good player practices something until they can get it right. A great player practices something until they can't get it wrong.

Can Toph record his video and his screen separately? Zooming in on a 120x120 video of toph talking is not great. If he had that video separate, the editor could replace those zoom ins with high quality video footage.

It doesn’t bother me that much but it would be convenient

It's good enough quality tbh. Seperating it would also make it difficult to have these zoom-cuts and having it only partially full be the camera so it's not jarring having the fullscreen context again

you cant really separate it, he streams all his videos. if he recorded it then yeah he could do that

The craziest thing nobody talks about is that there are some rare birds out there who can do all three intuitively and it won't even feel like work for them

I definitely solo practice/lab too much. It isn't really bc I want to get better or feel that I am bad, but just because I like listening to podcasts while practicing techskill in uncle punch.

Emphasis on the feedback loop mentioned in 3:50. I think that's really powerful for your improvement to be constantly moving forward and not stalling out. It also makes you feel less stuck on what to do with your time.

Windows Game Bar has the same feature as shadowplay except it records 30 seconds and is already built into windows (win+G to enable gamebar, the clip hotkey has to be enabled in there)

I'm confused, is he saying a year in is too early to practice wavedashing or too late. Because I am like a week in and I feel like I should be grinding tech stuff so I can actually learn how to play properly, rather than relying on reads and aggression to get wins. I mean, I am going to do it regardless of what people say, but I am curious what he meant by that.

I have shadow play but I actually do something different. I remember the moment. I either write it down or keep it in my mind. Then I go back at the end of a session and clip them all myself. And then I keep them in a folder. I will admit they are mostly clips I think I did something cool. But more and more often I have been clipping interesting or odd interactions. I also take that opportunity to watch the entire match sometimes. Watch several matches. Watch the matches I maybe think didn't matter. Knowing what my opponent does, since I already played them, I think about why I was doing what I did. Not necessarily if it worked or not. But WHY did I go about this in that way. Or what have you. I noticed a pretty big bump in my skill when I started doing that... I am still trash tho.
@VisaCardholder
@VisaCardholder 2 года назад
I think this sort of thought process then makes it easier to review others. Why did THEY do that. Why would I have done something different? What am I missing? Did the opponent do something? That line of thinking has helped me a ton.

Melee is so fucking SICK! People that they they dont like it. Its like Naww! It can't be that the game is going 20 years and that they don't like it. Theres something shady behind that. They're either not giving it enough effort. Not trying. Or just faking it. It can't be that its the strongest 20+ years going game and that you don't like it. You're either trying to get a reaction or trying to be a douche. Melee is SICK and its the SICKEST game ever and its the GOAT of all the electronic games. its going 20 years strong suck on that.
