Can we just stop to say what an incredible job they did with theming? The keycaps show Lego studs, the keyboard has common Lego colors, the box looks amazing, and even the USB cords and Bluetooth dongle have studs!

It's cute, but I've worked with computers my entire career and I have some advice. Buy a proper ergonomic keyboard. It will last forever, it costs less and your hands will thank you for it in the end. All of these fancy keyboards are an absolute waste of money, tech landfill. If this advice saves even one person from going through the tendon problems I did, it was worth it.

Seen a comment or two about it being membrane. No idea how you could mistake Kailh Box switches or some clone/recolor of them, but ok. Main Issue I could see is cleaning and the clutch power of the studs though :/ Bottom studs seem neat if you want to build your own form of adjustable feet/stand or something along those lines, which is cool. Would like to see what the flex is like on the board and how well the "keycap legend pieces" grip to the underlying keycap bases. Coloring on the bases of the keycaps seems like a bit of a miss too if you want to customize. Even if you cover them, the size isn't the same as LEGO plates, so it would definitely be visible. Wonder if they will have different versions available in different colors. Don't see a point to RGB lighting on the sides if it's covered in red plastic - kind of a huge oversight tbh... Spacing around the mode selector on the back of the keyboard is kind of stupid too - when in a non-center position any pieces placed on those studs would just interfere with each other. Could probably build around that but still... Price though seems understandable but still steep for the amount of negatives in my opinion.

Not in the market for a new mechanical keyboard myself, but would be keen on just buying those keycaps.

it's a nice idea but it appears to be a less desirable mechanical keyboard than most may want. I've been a lego fan since 1969 and i won't set aside my razer keyboard even for one that i can build up with lego. there's no backlit keys and the board itself appears a bit lightweight for a mechanical. i was excited for about 2 minutes there until it started to show a lot of weaknesses :(

At the price they want it's consistent to where Lego prices are going. 😁 Is it actually a licensed Lego product or just "Lego-compatible"? Just wondering. This won't be on my wish list but I can see some people really enjoying it as part of their Lego experience.

$200 in the custom mechanical keyboard community is actually considered budget lol. Solid value given its feature set, but the MSRP is gonna be $270 after the Kickstarter, and that's overpriced considering the poor ergonomics of the case and the keycaps.
@tecinplace1316
@tecinplace1316 Год назад
@@YoPham It's absolutely not 200 dollars since the 200 price point was for the super early backers and now you can only order it for 220/240 dollars. And it doesn't take in account the shipping and customs cost that the Kickstarter says that buyers themselves have to pay for on top of the price, and estimated cost for shipping is 35 dollars

Genuinely, thanks for covering this! It's nice to hear from someone outside the keeb community. This is a cute idea, but, imo, really impractical. Who is this keyboard even for? No enthusiast would use it - it takes up too much desk space and the ergos are poor. It's too tall and too flat. Sure, you could add plates underneath the feet to add some typing angle, but then the keycaps are too short and too flat. Enthusiasts prefer sculpted profiles like cherry. If it's a uniform profile, XDA or DSA because at least the edges are rounded off so that it's easier to differentiate between keys. Sure you can swap keycaps, but that's additional cost and defeats half the PIXEL's purpose. It's not even a good display piece because most keyboards are displayed vertically and any minifig or build mounted this keyboard would look silly...if you could even get the studs to hold it. You'd be limited to tile designs. Is it to bring people into the custom keeb hobby? I don't see any average person is shelling out $200-$300 for a novelty low-profile TKL. It would be better to just build your own keyboard case.

Nice review, way overpriced, you can some good mechanical keybords for that price and that is a membrane keyboard not even a mechanical one.
@RacingBrick
@RacingBrick Год назад
Why would it be a membrane keyboard?
@nomic655
@nomic655 Год назад
It won't just take a lack of keyboard to convince you to buy this, but also a lack of knowledge about the quality of keyboards to justify this price. It sells a cool gimmick, but I'm not sure about the practicality of adding full size builds around your keyboard. I'm also not sure about the effort given to the back. It's definetly a cool canvas for designs, but you're not gonna see them in day to day usage, to the point where you might forget them. Nobody is really going to ditch their keyboard for this. And noone who knows about keyboard quality will spend 270$ for what appears to be a membraine keyboard marketed as mechanical. No matter the brand quality and reputation. I'm also unsure about the legality of talking about Lego on their website. Good luck to their campaign, but that's definetly not the best move for business.
@AdamDuncan
@AdamDuncan Год назад
In the world of custom mechanical keyboards, the $199 early bird launch price is pretty good, especially considering all the custom parts they had to design from scratch given the 'Lego' compatibility. I'm curious where you got that this is a membrane keyboard? A quick visit to their site shows this is a hot swappable mechanical keyboard, meaning it has mechanical switches. It being a gasket mount means the PCB does not touch the top or bottom part of the case so it does not have a plastic twang to it. They can talk about being Lego compatible all they want. They just can't infringe on any of Lego's patents or claim that it is a Lego or a Lego licensed product. If they could get in trouble for just having "Lego" on their website, there wouldn't be blogs, 3rd party marketplaces or reviews of Lego for fear of legal trouble.
@nomic655
@nomic655 Год назад
@@AdamDuncan The only metric I have is the sound test on this video. From that alone I can definetly compare it to a membraine keyboard. Unless I see someone take it apart and show that it's mechanical, I can't be convinced otherwise due to past knowledge from advertisements. I understand there's a lot of custom parts for the whole Lego compatibility gimmick, but their quality is sub par to Lego. For a membraine keyboard, even if there's a lot of value to the design process, the keyboard quality doesn't add up to the price. I could cut them some slack but that's still a bit too much. I don't know if I can see this product as if it focuses on profit, but more as if it focuses on brand growth. A respectable motive still, especially if the keyboard really is mechanic. But I know a lot of people wouldn't want to listen to that sound constantly. The gimmick of building with Lego around it is great, but not endless. A keyboard is a tool for work afterall.
@RacingBrick
@RacingBrick Год назад
So based on the sound of my not-too-professional recording you question the company that is otherwise selling dozens of different *proven* mechanical keyboards and components. Why would they ruin they own business by lying about their product in the launch campaign? I checked a lot of different offerings for pre-built gasket mount mechanical keyboards and they were in a very similar price range. This might not focus on ergonomics, but that's not uncommon in this world. IMHO LEGO compatibility is not a better or worse gimmick than having a fully transparent keyboard, or with full of LEDs, coded keycaps etc. Computer customization is rarely about practicality, there's a huge market for all the weird "pimp up my pc" accessories.
@nomic655
@nomic655 Год назад
@@RacingBrick Well, you're the reviewer. You put an audio test on your video. Out of that, I say the keyboard doesn't sound mechanic. They might be a proven company, good for them, but out of your own test, I took that conclusion. I know you, not the company, so if you wanted to convince me to buy that keyboard, you didn't do so well, and now you're blaming me for it. Congratulations. I know there's a lot of people looking for that kind of accessorized peripherals, which is respectable. But those who are not won't even give a chance to it. I guess I'm just not in the target audience. But didn't you say to write our thoughts in the comments? These are my thoughts. Hopefully my comment can be taken as a constructive responce and a contribution to the comment count for RU-vid's algorithm and not as something that it's not.
@RacingBrick
@RacingBrick Год назад
@@nomic655 I think you got something fundamentally wrong, this video is not a paid advertisement, I'm not here to convince you to buy this keyboard. This is my test of the product, that's all. Sharing thoughts is always welcome, but in my book a constructive comment does not include accusing anyone with misinformation about a key aspect of their product. You can clearly see the switch btw at 1:39, so if this is really a membrane keyboard then the company surely spent tons of R&D money masquerading it as a mechanical keyboard, so it is worth every penny :)
