If you get burned while making this project, you're doing it wrong! Super easy, cool little trick for people with limited tools. These containers are super handy, and you probably have everything you need sitting around the house somewhere.

You can probably also flame polish the cut edges. Just be careful not to melt the plastic. Wait...

So glad no actual 35mm film canisters were harmed in the making of this video. :)

Cool! A slightly more convincing effect might be to trim the top at a bit of an angle, not so much that the cap won't fit right, but enough to make it look like it melted unevenly. Cheers! Chris.

You just always amaze me...not that every idea you have is of interest to me, but the fact that you would, for example, look at a spray paint can lid and realize that an old film canister lid would fit onto it. And, from that you could make it appear to be a melted film canister. Brilliant. I would NEVER look at a lid like this as anything more than a lid for a spray can...which shows your crazy type of genius intelligence...a lot like past inventors.

Wow, thank you. Comments like that make it worth it. I know it's a dumb little trick, but you're right: we can look at simple things in a completely different way, and doing so really opens up our options. I think that's a point worth sharing.

I do miss film canisters. People in the past had it easy with medicine bottles, film cans, and tobacco tins.

Simon Heslop Film is still very fun to shoot, but you have to be willing to process your own film at home; it's way too expensive to send it out and it takes too long. Thankfully, processing film at home, even C-41 chemistry colour film, is actually way easier than you'd expect. Plus you get to keep the film canisters!

Very cool. Reminds me of my 5th grade when our teacher made us make key chains out of actual meted RX bottles. You put say coins inside the bottle then placed it on a cookie sheet in a toaster oven and the bottles melded into a see through blob capturing the treasure inside . They were then cooled and a hole drilled to acept a key chain. Warning they might not be as cool today as they were in 1986 arghhhhh I'm getting old.

I will also be posting another one today. These are both kinda "bonus" videos, but I will have a pretty cool build project next Friday. Have a good weekend ;)

I think my favorite part of this little project is that even though I know exactly how it was made and that it is fake, it still looks perfectly melted. It hurts my brain looking at it.

I haven't seen one of those in years but I just had a strong sense memory of what those canisters smelled like.

I would say it's a fair bet that you're not alone, Steve. According to a study done by the Army Corps of Engineers, 81% of domestic pot ends up in one of these at some point. I just completely made that stat up. But you can't prove it wrong.

How on earth did you even find out a film canister lid would fit there? This is a really neat container joke.

I'm hoarding my last few 35mm canisters. They're in my secret stash with the cassette tape boxes and my prized reel to reel computer tape backups. I like to think of it as my retirement investment. So I'm all for any projects you can come up with that consume any of those items, as it only increases the value of mine.

VHS is now at an all-time low. Perhaps we should build a DVD shelf entirely out of tapes!

bonus idea: have SD-cards branded w/ common film brands from the old days.

Of course, I immediately did this. And, Yes, running a lighter around the edges gives a nice polished and bulbous edge to it.

Informative video. I still have lying around some of these 35 mm film canister, full (with the negative film) or empty (never throw anything away which you maybe need in the upcoming 60 years of your life, as long as you have the place for keeping it). But it never came up to me to try if its lid fits to the lid of an empty spray can. Those lids I do not throw away either, so I'll have the possibility to try that. Thanks for sharing! By the way, you are quite experimental. Do you know a safe way to open an empty spray can? It's written that you should not try to open (punch a hole in it) even when it's completely empty because it still may explode...... I sort of do not believe that but I do not have the courage to try. Until now I throw them away.

I ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILTY FOR THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION. I've opened them before. I've even done propane canisters, but I'm not quite right. Keep the nozzle depressed overnight to allow it to FULLY empty and equalize. If you get more than a 1/2 second hiss in the morning, try a different can; it's not worth it if it sounds like there may be a blockage in the valve that doesn't let it empty. At go time, make sure the room is warmer than the can, because warmer contents = increased volume/pressure. There will certainly be some risk involved no matter how you do it, so be sure to wear glasses. If you are puncturing the can, secure it in a vice and make sure that it exhausts away from you. Start like an assassin, from a distance (with a bb gun), and then move in closer as you gain confidence and understanding. Don't ever do anything that you don't feel comfortable with: if you aren't ready, research more.

shouldn't it be molten?
@azyfloof

I would say molten means it's still in a liquid state, whereas melted means it _was_ molten, then became set. Perhaps molten and melted are present and past tense, not sure. Food for thought though!

I purchased a Canon Sure Shot Z135 for my girlfriend in 2000. But if you have a girlfriend now, I would suggest getting her a Nikon 1 J2. One more thing: don't text in front of her, because it's rude; give her your complete attention.
