Melvin and Howard (1980) One Minute Film School: Get Your Characters talking

This is the opening sequence from Jonathan Demme's film based on a true story (well Melvin's version anyway) about a milkman in Nevada who has a chance meeting with Howard Hughes who subsequently leaves him his entire fortune. The characters get talking in the 1st 15 minutes of the film and establish plot and character. The rest of the film is a joy, one of my favorites and the film lesson is clear here, get your characters talking to each other early - 10-15 pages is just fine, it will get cut back with edits.

Short sequence, but easily the best movie characterizing Hughes in his later years.

Especially when he's racing Han Solo, on a county road, at the crack of dawn, with "Green Onions" playing in the background.

One of my favorite movies. I believe it happened. At the end when Melvin was talking to his Attorney that wanted to continue the legal battle Melvin said "I will never see any of that money" Then What happened was, " Howard Hughes sang my song! Santa's supped up sleigh! That's what happened......Melvin was happy with that.

"Howard Hughes sang Melvin Dumars song". That line defined the whole film. Melvin did not get the big prize but he had the memory of a special moment.

Every item in the "Mormon Will" points to Howard Hughes.

I've never seen this movie. I didn't know much about Howard Hughes until I saw The Aviator. I realize this is fiction, but still... seems interesting.

Dunmar did get screwed…. evidence surfaced in 2005 that was indeed telling the truth. All for naught as the fortune had already been divided up by the family Hughes hated.

Whether Melvin met Hughes is irrelevant. It's a story about if they had, a very nice story.

I have a similar scene in my story, but can't seem to make it interesting. This scene is interesting mostly because the audience already knows he's Howard Hughes. What if you don't have that advantage? A few other examples may help me. Here I have learned not to be afraid of small talk.

Hey, FilmSchoolGuy, I agree with you about the wondrous quality of this scene, but getting characters talking isn't a tenth of the battle when it comes to good movies. Watching movies I often find myself absorbed until someone starts speaking. The problem is that screenwriters and filmmakers have nothing to say, therefore their characters have nothing to say, and their films have nothing to say. "Dialogue," per se, doesn't address this issue.

He finds a freezing Howard Hughes in a field outside of Vegas? Truth can be Stranger than Fiction! I wonder if this really happened? It’s a neat story anyway! Now if he comes out with a new story about seeing Bigfoot then you know it’s a lie! At least he sold the rights to make this movie and made some money 💵 off this story. Hey, wait a minute I think I saw Elvis just down the road away. He looked older but I’m sure it was him! LOL 😝!

It would have been true or Melvin should have wrote fiction for the film industry.

Some say at the time Howard Hughes was both the richest and the poorest man in the world 🌎! The richest because he was the 🌎 worlds first Billionaire and the poorest because he didn’t have a single friend in the world 🌎!

Henry Ford and John D. Rockefeller became billionaires, before Hughes was one.
