Oh Savior who descended deep, But rose again death could not keep. As your ascent to the Fathers side, So bring our brethren back to the light. And ever more shall rise to Thee, Glad hymns of praise from beneath the sea. ....My verse for submariners
I'm a teacher and navy vet. I show this video to all my students on Veteran's Day and in Memorial Day. Then I tell them to go out and find a vet and thank them for their service.
Grandpa served aboard the AH-5 Solace right across from the Arizona. It was sung at his funeral as well. Used to go to the Captain Kid officer's club with him down in San Diego on base.
Sang this at my dads memorial service, he passed in january at the age of 93. He was a seabee signed up in 1944 at the age of 17, served 2 yrs. with NCB 147 in japan then almost 5 yrs. with ACB 1 in korea. I will miss him.
I'm a Navy bet from the Vietnam era. This is a tribute befitting those that have given the ultimate sacrifice. May God hold them in the palm of His hand. Amen.
Absolutely breath taking....PERFECT SLOW tempo....just love this....gives one a chance to THINK and REFLECT and to FEEL the lyrics speaking ..... a voice to God the Father.....just beautiful and very emotional ....GOD BLESS all....
My Father was a 30 year "mustang officer" in the Navy, and was the senior enlisted man in the admirals office at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. When Adm. Nimitz took command, he gave my dad his commission and made him Deputy Flag Secretary. In all things, I could not have had a better father.
Thank you. My grandfather survived Arizona. Father Navy vet, so am I. God bless our shipmates who never made it home and who are still on eternal patrol.
So wonderful to hear this on the Arizona Memorial. My grandfather and namesake watched her go down from his ship at the point of Ford Island, the AH-5 Solace on which he was a chaplain. He only spoke of it once to us and never again. He went on to serve in the Pacific for most of the war, my father joining the Navy at it's end as a torpedo bomber gunner who never saw action. The Navy Hymn has always been near to my heart. "O Trinity of love and pow'r, Our brethren shield in danger's hour; From rock and tempest, fire, and foe, Protect them where-so-e'er they go; Thus, evermore shall rise to Thee Glad hymns of praise from land and sea." Amen and amen. Rest in His arms Grandpa and Dad. I'll see you soon...
...1998 visit...Dad (stationed there in the late 50's) retired from active service but continued to serve at COMNAVAIRLANT (Norfolk) through 2001 #reverence. We learned this hymn at Oceana as children...never forgot it.
Dad was navy lifer, CTC combat veteran Pacific theater and Korea, this was performed at his memorial service in 2000. He was navy and USA all the way.Bless him and all of his shipmates that didn't come home
A very touching hymn rendered in a very special place. After 27 years in the Navy, I can still remember memorizing the words to the Navy Hymn in Boot Camp. The flag I was presented at my retirement was flown over the USS Arizona.
As a former US Navy officer during the early days of the Vietnam conflict, this video is very beautiful and moving. We used to sing the Navy Hymn every Sunday in Chapel on Guam.
My son is getting ready to head off to Navy boot camp. Both his father and I are Navy vets. Had to look this up tonight because I've got the mama blues. Thank you very much for this.
To the memory of my maternal grandfather, David Franklin 'Frank' Skaggs, US Naval Reservist who served bravely in World War II in the Pacific Theater of Operations as a chief motor machinist's mate, a man I never met, your memory and service record to God and country will never be forgotten. Thanks for your service, Grandpa Frank, I love you and won't forget you!
As they sing "Amen" I see the name of my great uncle, the inspiration for my service. For what it's worth, thank you to all involved in producing this video, you do us all a great service!!
The strength and honor of our great nation lies not in our govrrnment nor in our individual representatives thereof but in the proud commitment of the brave men and women who put their lives on the line for our protection and defense. God bless and save the United States of America and those who serve.
I dedicate this hymn to the officers and crew of the U.S.S. Wahoo. Captain Dudley "Mush" Morton, you showed them how it's done and because of you and your crew I am free.
The acoustics there are perfect too!! I lived in HI before the memorial was built. I started school before it was a state and I thought the stark sight of the sunken ship with no embellishment very moving even at the tender age of 6. As an adult I was able to see the memorial and it's perfect!!
Eternal Father, Strong to Save is also called the Navy Hymn... it is sung at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. This was a favorite hymn of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and was sung at his funeral in Hyde Park, New York, in April 1945. It was also played by the Navy Band in 1963 as President John F. Kennedy's body was carried up the steps of the U.S. Capitol to lie in state. Roosevelt had served as Secretary of the Navy and Kennedy was commander of a PT boat (a torpedo-armed fast attack craft used by the United States Navy in World War II) during World War II. The original words are: Verse 1: Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm hath bound the restless wave, Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea! Verse 2: O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard And hushed their raging at Thy word, Who walked'st on the foaming deep, And calm amidst its rage didst sleep; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea! Verse 3: Most Holy Spirit! Who didst brood Upon the chaos dark and rude, And bid its angry tumult cease, And give, for wild confusion, peace; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea!
My Uncle, a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, was laid to rest a number of years ago. Included in the ceremony was the Navy Hymn followed by the flag presentation to my Aunt, his widow, with the words: "On behalf of the President of the United States of America and a greatful nation . . . " If hearing this hymn and those words don't get to you, you're not of this world.
Remembering and honoring this December 7th all those shipmates who served and paid the ultimate price for Freedom. And "fair winds and following seas" to those who currently serve our country. BZ
This is just beautiful. Thank you for sharing. My son, should he choose one day, will be 4th generation Navy. Thank you again.... God Rest Our Departed, good shipmates all.
The US military has some really great musicians. Very under appreciated. I was at a NY Knicks game during Fleet Week a few years years ago when I heard what was IMO the best straight sung rendition of the Star Spangled Banner by a woman from the Navy Band chorus. It was moving and perfect...no idiotic embellishments. Incidentally, it’s worth noting that the US military’s budget for the arts was actually larger than the whole National Endowment for the Arts.
Well done. Very appropriate for all went down with the U.S. S. Arizona. I remember hearing The Navy Hymn sung by a Navy Chorus at the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, NYC, and my wife whispering to me, "They are singing about themselves". Moving. Very right for Veterans Day, 2015.
My dad was on the Wasp the Hornet the Hancock and the Indianapolis. He was navy code breaker, where ever Halsey went dad and his team went also. He rode the Indianapolis to deliver the bomb to Tinian he and his SPOOKS stayed on the island and the Indianapolis went to her grave
Rest in peace uss wasp.cv7 and her sister ship the hornet my grandfather was on the wasp when she sank after the torpedo attack he has passed on now i wanna visit the arizona and the missouri if i ever get a chance
Thank you for posting this. We visited the Memorial on vacation 2 years ago. It is an unforgettable experience. I wonder if Barack Obama has ever been there.
When I hear this I think of USS Cumberland at Hampton roads in 1862. She was rammed and sunk by CSS Virginia. She continued to fire her guns until they were covered by the waters....a gallant crew and a gallant ship....
Thank you for posting this rendition - very moving. My Pop was presented the memorial flag which flew over the monument when he retired (30 yr) He's up above now and prob drinking whiskey and smiling at us. Thank you Gentlemen for singing and BIG thank you to the brave women and men of the United States Navy, and all the armed forces.
