Way to sing, NAVY! A West Pointer from many decades ago salute you. Job well done. Thank you for your service in the greatest Navy of all time. Keep the faith.
This hymn was sung at the funerals of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and John Fitzgerald Kennedy. The former served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy during the First World War, and the latter served in the Navy during the Second World War.
I’m academy grad, class of ‘94. I was a prior enlisted Marine. One of the things that impressed me most was diversity of midshipmen. I’m not talking about race or sex. Geography, background, beliefs. Diverse yet drawn to service & the heritage of the USNA. Most of these kids could go to school anywhere & be anything. To choose this means something.
Eternal Father, grant, we pray To all Marines, both night and day, The courage, honor, strength, and skill Their land to serve, thy law fulfill; Be thou the shield forevermore From every peril to the Corps.
My Dear Friend Larry Rubright passed away this morning. The COB served in the USN for 31 years attaining the rank of Sr. Master Chief. It seems appropriate that he hears THE NAVY HYMN one last time! May you have Calm Seas and a Following Wind on your last voyage Master Chief 😢
Blessed are the Navy Seals for they take lives not to be Brash and cocky but they take lives to save lives and may they continue to protect our country God bless the men Who were the badge of the eagle and the trident
My brother seved in the Navy 20yrs. My cousin served during WWII, two uncles served during WWI. I guess would call us Navy, but had relatives in Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines, and even Merchant Marine during WWII. Very military family we are proud of all served.
Brother Park, thank you so much for posting this magisterial male choral video! Gamsahamnida. So beautiful - I would bet the dead of our men of valor are singing with them. 🙏🏽
This was the closing hymn at my husband's funeral. He served in the Pacific in WW2 and "found a home" in the Navy. Win loved the sea, so it was very appropriate. /Winston's wife.
Remembering my father, CPO3 Jim Bindner, USS Noble, He was later provisionally commissioned Army captain if the US had intervened in Hungary, an AF Air crewman in testing his concept for a one-step flair for landing military aircraft in white out conditions and the test coordinator for GPS receivers. He also foresaw paired electrons, which he believed could be used in interstellar communication. He also invented the autopilot for the Navy mini-RPV.

Britainnia's Royal Navy..Heart of Oak. Eternal Father the Royal Navy's Hymn..Nice to see the USN had adopted this most British of Hymns. God Bless America and the UK
Did not know this was #HRN until very recently....there's some memorabilia from my dad's visit aboard the HMS Brittania...the neat thing...they must keep excellent records...a friend posted the nicest tribute on Instagram 14 June 2021....#Yr20 #FlagDay
YES! YES YES YES!!! I LOVE THE ORIGINAL WORDS! And they are so fitting for an army of soldiers to sing!!! "As HE died too make men holy let us die to make men free"!!! It's a sober truth of war that I believe is glossed over when the original words are changed to say "let us live". I don't like war, but this is a battle song that carries so much important history and it must not be altered to fit the times. This song is to be sung as written!!! Wonderful!!!
There's something in the melody of this hymn that makes you feel victorious, proud, patriotic and sincerely pray for the safety of our men and women in the military. GOD BLESS AMERICA.
@@Stephen-lx9nm And your point was....?? I was referring to the performance as a cultural event. Even British hymns have value as reflections of a great culture.
For Mary from St. Louis, (His son served and paid the ultimate price in Afghanistan as a Navy Seal) To All The Faithful Who Have Sacrificed Their Lives and Health For The Country's Mission To Protect In The Father's Sovereign Will Our Most Valuable Assets..... Family and Country. Words cannot even begin to justify the "Tearful Emotion" in the power [Deep Emotional Pause] of this song. The depth of gratitude, in humility, to just say, THANK YOU. "REMEMBER OUR FALLEN;"......."YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN." A Christian and a Desert Storm Vet, John
I did not hear the USNA Glee Club (above) sing the verse which included Naval Aviation, which was one of the three versus(?) we sang during Sunday Mass and Services in the NAS Pensacola Chapel when I was attending Aviation Officer Candidate School, and VT-10, in 1968/69. It went something like this:: Lord Guard and Guide the men who fly, through the great spaces in the sky, Be with them always in the air, through darkening storms and sunlight fair, , Oh hear us when we cry to Thee, for those in peril in the air. Does anyone know where Eternal Father, aka "The Navy Hymn" , can be heard, or obtained, or purchased, which includes Naval Surface, Naval Aviation, and the Marine Corps, in the hymn?
My Father graduated from the Naval Academy in December 1941 - 13 days after Pearl Harbor was attacked. He served in WW11, Korea, and Viet Nam. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1967. After he passed away, he was buried with full military honors and the Navy Hymn was played at the Funeral Service
@@litamtondy I have no idea what in the world, happened to that comment. It is as if two were merged. Yes, I received straights A’s in English. Just to say this time, This is not the place to harass those that have had loved one’s that were in and fought for the US Navy. My Father fought in the South Pacific in World War II, and I had a relative that was Commander of a Submarine in the 1980’s. Let it go on a person’s simple comment. Perhaps they have vision problems. Not to be confused with jerk, problems.
Eternal Father, strong to save Whose arm hath bound the restless wave Who biddest the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee For those in peril on the sea O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard And hushed their raging at Thy Word Who walked on the foaming deep And calm amidst its rage didst sleep Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee For those in peril on the sea
That was excellent. They have a great sound, and sang those songs with skill and musical feeling. A fine tribute to their fellow men and women of the seas.
Listen you guys, we served with honor, pride and gave our best. We lost soldiers and some came home alive, but truth is we are all Under our great flag and Corp colors. None of us will return to who we were before we took oath.
The Navy Hymn has always been one of my favorites. Although I was in the Army, I would love to have this sung at my funeral. It is so fitting for all who served.
Breck - There are lots of alternate verses that have been written to accommodate the various branches of the military. Go to this website by the Navy and you can see some of the verses. [ www.navy.mil/navydata/nav_legacy.asp?id=172 ] My Dad - 94 years old - just passed away and I even found a set of verses for the Navy SeaBees! So - you probably can have this wonderful hymn put on your "list".
Amen brother, to all Army comrades in Arms from a Navy Radioman. May God Bless those who gave their lives defending freedom and liberty. My Uncle was in the 101st Airborne Div, and jumped at Normandy....slow hand salute to all of them!!!
I think they will let you sneak in. Thanks for putting yourself at the service of our great Republic. I once saw a Army member say that he was not crazy, so he did not become a Marine. John Adams said, " America will be great as long as she is good." Our country is down a perilous road at present. It is difficult to appreciate something about which you know little or nothing. 340,000 Union men paid reparations with their blood. This does not include the survivors, often with grievous wounds. The surrender to Grant by Lee was on Palm Sunday. Lincoln had only 5 days to live.During those days, he had " Dixie" played in the White House. He sought no humiliation, but promised peace and unity, once again. That is the reason that Gen. Grant stayed on in DC, to keep Lincoln's wishes. Gen. Sherman, who was in awe of his friend, told him not to stay in DC. He said that it was a " nest of thieves." How apt. PS : Grant was not an alcoholic. Lincoln had arranged for a Norwegian artist, Ole Bolling, to paint a portrait of all of his key generals on horseback. After a few weeks with Gen. Grant, the artist asked him for some alcohol. Grant told him that he had none because he had suffered from such slander. And Grant was not a man to lie. Grant has taken army soldiers and their family via Panama ( Grant suggested that someone should build a cana; there.) This was after the Mexican War, where he was awarded three high decorations. Eventually, he ended up in a garrison in then California, but now Oregon. There was nothing to do but drink and hunt. Grant would go out on horseback with those officers who preferred birds. Grant had never shot an animal in his entire life. He saw a beautiful group of wild turkeys, and he said there were 41. Lincoln could not kill a chicken. These two gentle men were to oversee a war. That must have been Providence. Had he continued in his paintings, he would have been one of the greatest artists of the 19th century. They are in the West Point Museum. Grant was slender and only 5' 8". He could not hold his liquor. With one drink, he slurred his speech, with two, he had to hold onto the furniture. The other officers, his good friends, told him to fight the charge, because he was innocent. There is nothing in writing from Buchanan about a court martial.(Grant held no grudges. Later, the the Civil War, he gave Buchanan important duties. How many individuals would reward a man who had vilified him?) Grant had fallen into a deep depression, missing his wife and his children. He also had problems with his teeth. He had a son, his namesake, whom he had never met, and he was now a toddler. He also battled another bout with malaria, which he had contracted as a child. So, he headed home, now a captain. Because California was in the midst of a Goldrush, Grant had three pieces of gold with him. Along the way, he met two former soldiers who were in a bad way. He gave each man a nugget of gold. Then he met another man who was in dire straits. He gave him his last piece. When he arrived home, there were two little boys playing in the yard. He swooped them up in his arms, but they did not know who he was. Sometimes, when I think of our wars and their absolute pain and horror, it saddens me to see men with purple hair and who must take careful artistry to groom their facial hair, I question everything. Look at those teenagers in those landing craft on D-Day, 1944, on those rough seas. I was 18 months old. Today is my birthday. November 15th. I think too many young people may have too much time on their hands.
Standing in abreast in a line at Basic Training Graduation we sang it. It was July I think, 1964 at Great Lakes. Someone fainted way down to my left. Nice soft grass, didn't hurt 'em.
I always think of USS Cumberland's last fight at Hampton roads when I hear the Navy hymn. She was rammed by CSS Virginia and she continued to fire her guns with her battle ensign flying till the water flowed over them as she sank..
