Memories of Eastfield with class 26 class 37 class 47 and class 20

Its hard for me to believe it was 20 years ago I filmed these clips of Eastfield depot in Glasgow, these are some of my first video shots and were filmed on pretty poor standard equipment. Never-the-less its a nice record filmed on 6th April 1990 just two years before the depot closed.
It was a meca for diesel fans and was a fascinating place to visit. On this occasion amongst the locos filmed were 20186-26001-008-010-034-039-046-37423-37707-47550-606-617-709.
The more modern clips were filmed in August 1992 just 4 months before the depot closed and features 26011 26002 26028 and green celebrities 26001 and 26007.

My dad took me to the Eastfield open day 1972 when I was just 3 years old although I wish I could remember it. When I was older and went spotting with friends Eastfield was always one of my favourite depots and was one of the biggest in the UK. There was always the distinctive sound of the 26s & 27s and the familiar smell of oil and diesel. Just wish I had a time machine.

Happy days - the go-to destination on visits to Scotland! Taxi from Hope St in the city centre and the taxi driver would occasionally drop us off at the carriage sidings by mistak and we had to redirect him. Never got refused by the foremen there - great bunch of lads! Always packed with 26s, 27s, 20s, 06's, 25s etc - what a great shed it was to visit ! If only we could go back in time....

Eastfield always had loads of Scottish Loco's as well as the Usual class 20,24,25. 26 &27's, I went there every year for a visit from 1976-1978 always asked permission to go around & always allowed, that was the good old days, always remember seeing a few smashed up locos like 20, 24 & 25 with various dings and heavy dents, Haymarket was also good with a few Class 55 always on shed along with the usual 26/27's my favourite depot back in the late 70's was Motherwell, A few pages of locos could be had & being from the South, good ones too.

I worked at Craigentinny I coupled the locos 26s,37s,47s,56, on&off the trains when I was a Shunter then worked at Waverley from 88 as a Conductor.

I wish I had the opportunity to go to the depot. At the time I first got into railways was around the time girls appeared on my radar. Great video. Long live the Scottie dog!!!!!

If you pass there now all you see is EMU & A few diesel units, long gone are the Loco's

@balmesh Hi Alan, yep it was Scotland , I had to nip out whilst it was uploading so didnt complete the description. As you can see it was the mighty Eastfield which was in Glasgow. A very special place. RIP

This was my old depot I was a fireman at eastfield traction depot springburn 1974 onwards my uncle was a mainline driver I spent many shifts with him on the west highland line queen st to Oban was my best shift day shift and the ghost train at night mailtrain with a class 37 or 27

I remember Eastfied Depot was having an open day on a Saturday, if I remember correctly they cancelled it a day or so before, quite a few people had travelled from down south to be meet by a closed gate.

hi mrstapleton, If I recall righty (during my fitter years at the Caly (st rollox) 77-83 there were a handful of class 33 cromptons in /out for work, why would this be when they were not used in Scotland (I think??) I did spend a couple of months ar Eastfierld as an apprentice changing brake blocks of commuters (boring) kind regards and thanx for posting up wonderful images John
