Most people memorize Scripture using the rote memory method (repeating the verse over and over again). This isn't bad, but there are other methods that most people aren't aware of. In this video, Josh shows how he uses the memory palace method to create a memory peg. This peg allows you to not only memorize faster, it can also provide you the ability to remember both the chapter and verse numbers.

That seems to add another layer of complexity, although it might be a good exercise in creative imagination, yet how to synchronize the symbolism of the palace to the verbatim of the text without relational connection seems to be the biggest hurdle as it is the text requiring memory regardless of the imaginative background in which the learner places the text. The biggest problem I find in my memorization is the empty space between paragraphs or headings disrupt the flow of the passage. To compensate i will mentally make note of certain numbers as connective links and divide a chapter in paragraph sections , Nothing is perfect but sticking with it eventually the words become visible and written in the inner book. where the Lord wants it. I will also record it on the phone from memory and this way the mistakes show up like a sore thumb and it becomes relatively easy to correct and thus perfect the memorization.

Hey Timothy, in case it wasn’t clear, this is just part one of the memory process. The next part involves encoding the text to each location. In my experience, the process takes no longer than rote memory and aids in long-term memory in a way that rote memory cannot. I’m not saying this is the “best” method nor am I trying to convince you to use it, but I encourage you to try it before you knock it.

@@BibleMemoryGoal I wasn't trying to knock it. I just think i would forget the imaginary markers and would have great difficulty to come up with enough imaginary markers. Years ago when I memorized the whole book of Hebrews I took the cue from a Sunday school paper to leave out words. This worked well but after a while I didn't need to do that > i just remembered it by constant attention to it.Now that i am older I do need constant repetition so it is really compensation for a reading and comprehension difficulty and also because the Lord showed me a book inside me that needs to be written on., so I am obeying this vision. I have difficulty reading. It may be attention deficit . To compensate I became a writer which requires long term attention. The words always flowed out so there was always a book inside and my writing was on the Word of God.( My last book The Song of Ascents , Encouragement from Psalms 120-136.). I currently have excellent memory recall of John 18- 21 after a few weeks finishing this. I am polishing off 13-15 for memory recall and will start on 16 this week. I try for one chapter a week. This is not a religious thing, but purely for love of God's word and like David to hide His Word in my heart. I appreciate the Lord more. He is so good to me . I got testimonies on His lovingkindness,

So blessed to see your youtube channel! Been practicing the Memory Palace, Peg System, Major system to memorize Scripture since 2015. But no, didn’t memorize the whole new testament yet, but you have inspired me to do it. My wife and friends have been trying to teaching these techniques to others and as u know, not much Scripture memory content out there using these techniques. Already forwarded your channel to others. Love your quiz vid with ur son. Cant wait to do that with my son. Appreciate what you are doing! Thank you! Will be praying for u and your family! “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen” - 2 Peter 3:18

Really?! That’s fascinating! Which verse gets split into two?

Hi Josh it seems that the las part of verse 11 is split up but that does not realy matter.For me it work better to use the "remember me app to memorize verses and collections of books.I learned the verses from different books under topics but now I started to connect them with the rest of the chapters.It works for me thank you for the inspirational videos.Greetings from South Africa

I'm currently trying to work my way through Psalm 119 which has 176 verses. How would I go about remembering 176 different places? Just started. I've got the first 12 verses so far using old fashioned rote method, the traditional method. So still a long way to go. Looking forward to your upcoming videos to see how you use memory palace method in practice.

That’s quite a goal! For longer passages or books, I tend to use a place I know very well and can divide into many places. Your home would be a good example, where each room could have 10-20 different “places”. Make sense?

Brycee, that’s awesome!! I pray that you were able learn the psalm 119! I’m actually starting to memorize that myself, just started and I’m in verse 4! Tell me how did it go for you?

New subscriber here. I’ve read a couple books on the memory palace and always wondered…can you use the same memory place you create to remember more than one thing or do you need a new place for each thing you want to memorize?
@BibleMemoryGoal
@BibleMemoryGoal 2 года назад
Great question, Scott. I think it’s a mix of both. You can have “pegs” that serve as a marker where you can place a lot of things you want to memorize. For example, I peg “cats” to the number 9 (cats have 9 lives) and place cats in every location where I memorize verse 9. This peg stays the same and keeps every verse 9 I have. For palace locations, though - especially if I want to keep it in long term memory - every palace location is only used once so that I can always find it without confusion. In this way, I can walk into my palace (unique) and then look for where I placed cats (shared) to see exactly where verse 9 is in my palace.

I would recommend having more positive twds oneself. So for example, #7 Instead of putting oneself down, saying 7/7x I will fail, (which as we know words have power, as do our thoughts), I would add something positive instead. There is a pond and there is a rainbow (7 colours) and my ball catches a ride on the rainbow across the pond. You said weird stuff is better, so that makes more sense, and you don't -negative talk yourself. The negative talk has an impact on the body and can get reprocessed to other belief systems and memories as well, so positive is the way to go :). Just my two cents :)
