Great rundown. As a Memphis native, I only have 1 correction. We are not a dry rub barbecue city. We're ALL ABOUT THE SAUCE! We like a sweet sauce and we like coleslaw on EVERYTHING!!!
No we are not! I ONLY eat dry rub and I live in Memphis. Everyone else I know is also a dry rub only type of person. Also I like coleslaw but not on everything on the side.
I live in Memphis and if you do want to go on a trip here, I would definitely recommend Shelby Farms and the lake and the playground and all of the trails there
We have a good bit of natural spots within a few hours too. There are also a few music museums and studios you can visit. Just use common sense. If you don't feel safe don't go.
Ive never met a more arrogant group of ducks in my life..i tried to get an autograph ..they turned their backs and just waddled away..what jerks.terrible
Being a Memphis native. I would like to give a brief history of the city. The Founder of our great city named it Memphis because it reminded him of his many trips to Egypt. Like Memphis, Egypt which sits on the Nile River we sit on the Mighty Mississippi. Also, many people are unaware that Memphis was one of the cities used on the Underground Railroad for slaves seeking freedom to the North. There is another museum there called Slave Haven. I encourage you to add that one to your list while in Memphis.
Nice, but not smart...wish he had a Bible on hand to read about the issues that Memphis faced in the Old Testament. I’m African and names are very spiritual and they carry weight ... it’s unfortunate that Memphis is still a struggling city in 2020... I’ll drop one of scriptures you can research and see for yourself............... Ezekiel 30:16 Verse Concepts “I will set a fire in Egypt; Sin will writhe in anguish, Thebes will be breached And Memphis will have distresses daily.
There was this museum I visited in Memphis in an elementary school field trip I forgot what it was called but it definitely had something to do with slavery . We got to go underground to a piece of the Underground Railroad . They also had cotton .
I went to art school in Memphis, drove a limo for the Peabody, performed dance choreography, had too good a time. I'd been away from most of 20 years, and a lot of my friends warned me, "You were here during a GOLDEN AGE for Memphis, and that's gone." A few years ago I started taking one of my kids to Memphis Tigers football games, and taking him around town, introducing him to my old haunts. My friends were wrong: that Memphis that I knew way back when is still there in abundance. As we were leaving town after our first visit together, my kid asked me, "Daddy, does everyone in Memphis know you? They act like they do!" And I had to say, "Look, Memphis is the world's biggest small town. You show them love, you're gonna get love!" I miss Memphis.
I'm a born and raised Memphian. I enjoyed watching your video. You nailed the hot tourist attractions and great safety tips. I was surprised though that you left out St.Jude's hospital. There's so much history to be known about it and how it's a vital part our city.
Ok, so you drive all the way to Memphis to watch some ducks waddle a few feet. Then what? It's over. Watch it online and see if it's worth all the gas, air fare, time, money. It's cute. It lasts a few minutes. It's over. Graceland nor the Peabody ducks are worth the trip.
I’m a New Orleans Native and I have visited the City Several Times and absolutely Love it!!!! Memphis in May, The World Class Zoo, The Pink Palace Museum, Dinstuhl’s Fine Candies, and Corky’s BBQ, The Residents are extremely Friendly and Accommodating, I cannot Wait to visit again in the Future!!!!!!
Memphis is a fascinating city. There are also several interesting places that are visitable by daytrip from Memphis: don't miss Clarksdale, Mississippi; Tupelo, Mississippi; and Jackson, Tennessee; lovely Arkansas is right next door.
I love all the fellow Memphians in the comments, also loved that you didn't shy away from the importance of safety while visiting. You nailed a lot of our attractions and specialties.
Billy, Beale at is great, Fri and Sun nights are best, not so crowded. Get outta there by midnite go to midtown, Layefettes Music hall on Overton square or Cooper Young, both areas are safe late night and only a couple miles away.
Billy Ruben, last but not least, when you come to Beale at, go to Blues City Cafe!!!! Half of it is a restaurant, the other half a bar with stage. Go to the bar side, get a table, order a full rack of ribs, come hungry!! It's the BEST Ribs in Memphis!!! The band's there are also the BEST!!!! GREAT PLACE!!! I'm born and raised here, trust me on this one. If you come, hit me up here before you travel and I'll get the message and come buy you a beer!!! No funny shit, just neighbourly, that's how we roll!! Peace brother....
As someone who has been born and raised in Memphis. 23 years here. If are not from Memphis and you come to visit STAY AWAY from Orangemound, and Fraiser and Do not go on Beale street after 11pm
I used to live in frayser for 10 years and it a great area. Sold my house for double. People who say stay away from an area are usually the one who causing trouble. Memphis is a great and weird place to live.
"Some areas are totally fine!... then 2 streets later it's NOT so fine". That's the MAIN thing to know when visiting here. As a local, I really enjoyed your segment. :-)
Your comment is so true. Do not venture to far off from Beale. Things can get a little “funky” and I ain’t talking about music. Been there 5 times. Hope things are well with you 🌴😎🌈Aloha
@@martinusv7433 no "tour guides" really needed. You can actually ask the hotel workers, restaurant employees, museum employees, locals on the streets (both black and white), even the guy with dreadlocks and gold teeth that you were assuming was about to rob you and they will all be friendly and tell you where not to go. Tourist rarely get "killed," phyiscally harmed, or even robbed. Cars can be broken into, but that's usually due to some enticing item left in the open.
It was a very fair review. It's not really that unsafe of a city as long as you use good judgment. If it looks dangerous, it probably is. If you feel like you don't belong, you probably don't. Respect yourself, where you are, and the people around you and you are pretty safe.
I grew up in Memphis, your number nine the security section was spot on!! the barriers you talked about at each end of Beale Street correct once you cross over those barriers you're in no man's land good luck making it to your car!
Memphis native here, great review, never been to Graceland but did go down to it the day he died. Need to include Overton Square which is a great place for tourists at night, much safer but use the parking garage and better security in parking areas. Lafayette's is a historical music venue everyone should check out. Use UBER and be completely safe and legal. Thanks for making this! Honest and truthful!
I was there in October of last year and it was by far the best place I’ve ever been me and my wife loved every minute of it Graceland the civil rights museum Beale street and sooo much more I was literally crying when we had to go to the airport to fly home anyway can’t wait to go back
Lol, he was crying b/c he had to leave... I remember as a child I cried b/c I wanted to leave lol... graduated high school in 2005 and been in Washington DC ever since.. I never go back home to memphis
Don’t forgot Jerry’s Sno Cones. Pick a flavor and make it a Supreme! Don’t forget to stir it up before eating. It’s delicious!!!! It’s a local favorite.
My daughter lived in Memphis for a year and we visited multiple times. I LOVE this city!!! I am it’s biggest promoter here in the Carolinas. So much to do and see and eat and see!!!
Being from NC, I was shocked to say..these are the best ribs I ever had!!! But I'm shocked how many people complain this place. My Aunt and I went for a long weekend to see Wicked at the Orpheum. Never felt un safe at all.
I live down town about a 5 minute walk from the Orpheus and I can say Memphis is not that bad... it is just certain areas that give Memphis a bad name. As long as you stay in the better areas of the city you have nothing to worry about.
catmodelt yeah it has changed a lot and within the last couple of years. I love living in the south bluff area. The downtown area has seen a lot of investment in the last couple years and the last time I checked I believe there was about15-20 billions dollars invested in new downtown projects and real estate. Give it another couple years and downtown Memphis will be worth twice as much as what’s it was.
Being born and raised in Memphis, this was fun to see! Y’all should come by Memphis Rox for an excellent non-profit and a lot of fun! You’ll have to wait until social distancing is loosened, but its worth it!
Also video!! Some people really just wanna tear down my city down but fail to see just how beautiful it is. While you touched on being safe (because we do have our fair share of rough spots), you still highlighted a lot of the beauty!! Your enthusiasm was everything!!
Walter, so glad you enjoyed Memphis. I live just cross the Mississippi River bridge in Marion Arkansas. Two towns west of Memphis. So happy you were able to be greeted with southern hospitality. Thank you for sharing and as always traveling grace.
This guy is pretty spot on about Memphis. I've lived here my entire life, 54 years. The Beale St. Music Festival and Memphis in May are prime times for tourists to come to Memphis for all the festivities and World BBQ Cooking Championship.
The most beautiful part of the city, and the most deserted, is the huge park by Mississippi River. It's unfortunate that it's not well maintained. Edit: just checked, it's called Mud island
tom lee park is what you are talking about. some days yes it may be like you saidduring the day. but i drive by it alot and most evenings its covered with people walking and enjoying the peaceful sunsets. mud island has more than one section. on the south end its a museum and ampitheater. the north end is upscale houses and apartments.
I was nice seeing the good side of Memphis and the better quality it has to offer people traveling. Born and raised here we see so much of the negativity. Definitely come with a hungry appetite!! New subscriber here!!
@@oldgroucho2203 Yup. But look at how Memphis ranks statistically. It is the worst of the worst in the U.S., and there's no glossing over it with "well just in certain parts."
I was just in Memphis for the first time yesterday. I was on a vacation all over the south. The people in Memphis downtown are very very friendly. I really enjoyed it there.
so awesome to see as a Memphis native. I live in Atlanta now and I have CONSTANT cravings for Memphis food and experiences. Drinking on Beale, nachos at Central BBQ, sushi at Sekisui, I miss it all. The Bass Pro Shop in the Pyramid is a slight laughing point for most of us. Love it (:
TOWNCAR PLUSH SMOOTH I will always love where I come from. Lol this is my home. Do I love my home, am I proud of it hell no. But will I always represent it hell yea. Lol you will always be proud of where you come from because it make you who you are. So to answer you question yea.
Rendezvous is always what tourists flock to it gets tons of credit but WOW is it overrated if you've ever been to, uh, literally any other BBQ restaurant in Memphis. So many hole in the wall delicious places!!!
Just seeing this video... my family visited Memphis about two weeks ago and we thoroughly enjoyed it! Slave Haven is a must as well as Sun Studio. I have three teenagers and they all raved about Sun! Also, we stayed at an Air BnB in Overton Square and found a nice breakfast place called Bob's Barksdale Restaurant. The staff of that establishment were first class and gave us a real sense of southern hospitality.
I was born in Memphis I have been there at least once a year for my whole life. I have never been to Graceland nor have any of my Memphis family. The BBQ is fabulous, my favorite is Tops and for Southern food The Cupboard on Union. Besides The Civil Rights Museum, The Brooks is a nice museum and I love to go to the Dixon to see the gardens. Mid-Town is a way better place to hang out than Downtown.
32, born and raised in Memphis, and I've still never been to Graceland. Now it kinda feels like I gotta stick to that and go to my grave with that statement 😂 anyway I appreciate you mentioning how friendly the people are. Also, if you come to Memphis, DRINK THE WATER! I've been all over the country and overseas, our tap water is mind blowingly good.
@Bethany Jones me too I grew up around the corner from his house and still to this day, I have never visited. I didn't even walk up to the wall and sign my name or nothing😂. I used to work, live and play around there. So many memories...and thank you for saying how good our water is. I literally just told my brother I can not move back to Phoenix or nowhere else because of the Water!!! I hate bottled water. I drink my tap water all-day everyday. I'm Gucci 😁
I live in Memphis. The thing is both of my parents grew up here and I’ve only lived here for 3 years. All of these were shocks are true. Also, Memphians don’t go to Graceland. It’s always funny to see people so excited going there as I’m going to school.
I need more time out there!! I got a short trip next month. Just to visit an old friend from job Corp school!! So not only do I get a day in memphis but a d ay in Lexington Tennessee I'm just excited to go!!
Memphis born here, excellent video and list. Very accurate. Too bad the fair, libertyland, and the colloseum are gone, but we do have the new FedEx Forum for some games, concerts, and performances. Could check that and of course the Orpheum usually has a play going.
Native living Dallas, but get back often. My favorite night spot is Mollie Fontaine’s. It’s one of a kind with great food, drinks and the funkiest vibe. Check it out.
In 1993, drove from Ozark, AR to W. Memphis to p/u someone from Greyhound Bus station. If I had known about Memphis we would have hit it before driving back to Arkansas!!
Thank you so much. As a life-long Memphian let me tell you “Memphis loves you!” Great and accurate review. Visitors please don’t be out late, like grandma used to say “nothing good happens after 10pm” it true, listen to grandma and you’ll be safe.
We passed through Memphis but never really stopped. The most impressive thing I remember is the smell. Smelled just like a paper mill. New Orleans is the same way. It's probably because of the river.
Keep in mind that if you plan to go to the "open bottle" part of Beale Street, you will need to pass through a gate and show ID to prove that you are drinking age. Also, on the dry rib BBQ. There are two types of BBQ people in Memphis. Dry rub and wet BBQ people. You can will find both.
Another fun fact about Memphis. Expect to get robbed or into a fight when you walk down Beale. I’ve lived here all my life and avoid that street at all costs.
Hey! I’m a Memphis native and here are some tips: - don’t travel alone on foot, have a buddy with you. We do have some crime - one and only BBQ is the best around! Their side items are just as good as their bbq. Very important - Graceland is in a bad part of town. Just get on the interstate and go, then get back on the interstate and get out. There’s nothing around Graceland but Graceland, so don’t go on a joyride - Overton square is a fun and safe place to grab drinks and have dinner. They have fun places. I like the Zebra Lounge for drinks, Lafayette’s for live music, second line is fancy southern food, Babalu has really great margaritas - Memphis botanic gardens in the spring and summer have beautiful flowers and is family friendly. Lots of trails to walk and the summer concert series is great there - Memphis is a place where you’ll need a car more than likely. Downtown is walkable, but if you want to go to Shelby farms, the botanic gardens, or anything out east, you’ll need a rental car. Uber would be pretty expensive to go out that way. If you want to stay downtown, the zoo, and to Overton square, walking and Uber should be good
I Enjoy Going To Memphis, The City Is So Awesome & There’s Lots Of Things To Do. I Typically Go To Memphis On A Short Vacation Or Going To Watch A Grizzlies Game.
thanx for visiting memphis. but you have only grazed the surface with the tourist traps. Beale i agree is awesome. but try The pink palace fri night laser light shows , the imax theater, of the museum itself. then theres the zoo you mentioned, for nature lovers the botanical gardens are always beautiful, the art down town you mentioned briefly, yes the new artists are in that district but you never mentioned the brooks museum of art, the dixon galleries, memphis ornamental metal museum. i invite anyone coming to memphis to see these places. just ask any local and they will point the way if your google maps gets you lost.
These are all great suggestions! In the same vein, there are a couple of beautiful historic homes. Some are operated by the pink palace, but there is also the Woodruff Fontaine Museum. I’m a docent, so I’m biased, but I think it’s a great hidden gem in Memphis. Nature lovers might also appreciate Lichterman, Shelby Farms, or Meeman-Shelby Forest. :)
Born and raised in Memphis and I'm going to tell you something I love it the people are great and the people are kind as long as you mind your business don't be snitching you get along with everybody I've been in this city my whole life I've never had one instance with a black man that was racial never had any racial things come against me a lot of that is a bunch of reporters hyping up stuff and trying to get a story this City is in love with each other we love our people and our people love us
Corkys is trash bruh. Central bbq dry rub is the only good bbq in memphis anymore... if you want real good bbq go to texas.. memphis got dethroned in 2016.
I've lived in Memphis for 17 years and the one restaurant I'd recommend for brunch is the Arcade. For BBQ , me personally I would say the commissary. Ofc one should visit Beale street. I don't recommend visiting Graceland unless you're a big fan, it's very expensive and in a bad area. The best view of Memphis is from the big river crossing it's free. Also don't miss out on Gibson's donuts.. They're the best
This transplanted NewYorker, has called Memphis "home" for the past 9 yrs!!! (I don't like the comparison to the two) Memphis is a City with so much Soul! In better times (pre-pandemic) you can experience Live Music every day of the week; with a lot of it free! From Beale St, Levitt Shell, Overton Square, Cooper-Young, Crosstown, South Main, Court Square & the likes! And some of the Best Food ever!!! Some of my favs (downtown- food/service/vibe) Ben Yays, Maciel's, Regina's, Rizzo's, Pearl's, Bleu@ Westin, Flava House, SAGE, Tugs, Loftlin Yard, BB Kings & other side street spots! Either way, Memphis has so much to offer! Enjoy!🎶🎤💕
I went there as a tourist. I had a great time. Any city you have to be careful. Where you go. I was on tourist bud. All the famous places, riverboat ride and Graceland. People very nice. It has some poor run down areas, as every city does. I had a nice time. It’s a nice friendly city. Only one negative, the drivers are crazy, no patience, even with a pedestrian right of way. I always hurried when crossed the street
Big River Crossing. Walk across the River. It’s - by far - the best view in town; and it’s free. I live in Germantown, 21 miles away. I ride my bicycle across practically every weekend. Yes; you would be SHOCKED at the level of bicycle infrastructure in this town.
The perfume counter at Walgreens is a must, The Shell station at Poplar & Perkins has succulent sushi and a marvelous view of a busy intersection. And don’t skip the bus station....enjoy a relaxing time in sticky plastic chairs while breathing exhaust fumes.
