It bugs me when guys say "We need to teach men what healthy masculinity is" and then list a bunch of feminine traits. Men can be feminine and women can be masculine. That's fine. But we're really messing this shit up by "redefining" it.

I like how preach said that about femininity. I come off as a very tough lady, and I am tough to some degree. Because of my home life growing up I spent a lot of time alone and I had to go through a lot alone. Same in adulthood. I used to consider myself a masculine woman but I've grown to see that couldn't be further from the truth. Everyone describes me as ultra feminine. I think I just associated being tough and self reliant as a masculine thing, but it doesn't have to be. Feminine masculine is way more of an energy thing. I've dated men who on paper seemed masculine but were very feminine in energy and it didn't mesh with me. I've dated men who on paper seemed feminine (with interests and style) but their energy was very dominant and masculine. I also associate dominance with masculinity.

Masculinity is a mix of things. Dominance is certainly a masculine trait but only a small part of it. Ive always taken it as confidence, leadership and the willingness to act. I would say the guy without a leg is alittle less masculine for feeling he has to distract people with tattoos from his missing leg. Theres nothing wrong with missing a leg, theres no need to be ashamed of it, and having the life experience to realize as much is admirable. People tend to see weaknesses in themselves where there arnt and turn that into a weakness. Its more masculine to just own something. If your bald, just go with it, dont try to hide it. Same with missing a leg, no point in hiding it, just own it.

Masculinity seems so easy to understand in my eyes. There are obvious physical traits including but not limited to shoulder size, body hair, the way you stand and how your voice sounds. Then there is masculinity more along the lines of mental and emotional traits like being able to take control, having the courage and want to protect, and being a strong leader. Of course, all these things are also traits that women can and do possess but in my opinion, the idea of masculinity does revolve around having these characteristics.

It's not even the outfits, I've seen big buff metal head dudes like hello kitty. Have you seen corpse grinder? The dude is brutal but still a big softy and kind. It's really about how you carry yourself. Masculinity and femininity is more like an essence than what you wear or what you like. Edit: I also realized when it comes to people saying that women are only attracted to masculine men (looks and personality). You got examples like Prince and Michael Jackson. Prince literally wore heels and other feminine clothing yet was pulling women left and right, Michael was also popular with the ladies. Popular pretty K-pop boys are seen by a lot of men as not masculine, yet girls from teen to even 30 go crazy over them. Emo/alternative men that wear as much makeup as some girls also have a lot of female admirers. Even in my own friend group, some of my friends are attracted to a men who paint their nails or partake in self care. But again, they still carry themselves a certain way. Which gives me more of a belief that how you look/dress doesn't really matter.

The issue with ranking masculinity is a true masculine male won't acknowledge their own masculinity so this is more a "Rank you ability to say the right thing"

Characteristics that would define a guy as masculine: ● Apearance ○ Strong jaw ○ Heavily built (Muscles) ○ Body hair ● Behaviour ○ Calm and collected (not over the top, doesn't whine, isn't overly emotional) ○ Authoritarian and aggressive (Asserts dominance) ○ Protective of those who can't protect themselves ○ Self-sacrificial (Soldiers for ex) ○ Very physical It doesn't mean that all those characteristics are good/evil, but diplaying more of those means you are more masculine imo.

it’s too often i hear people say they were taught masculinity is hiding your emotions. masculinity is controlling your emotions. recognizing your emotions in challenging times but yet not reacting emotionally. hiding and controlling are two very different things. it amazes me how many of us were taught wrong.
