Meningitis Made Simple

Discussion about the presentation of meningitis, signs, and diagnosis of meningitis. Remember meningitis is the inflammation and infection of the covering of the central nervous system such as the dura. On the other hand encephalitis is the infection/inflammation of the actual brain itself. Menignitis can be caused by many types of bacteria, fungi, and viruses. In recent news, compounded steroids used in spinal injections has caused a multitude of cases of fungal meningitis, resulting in many deaths making understanding this topic very important for healthcare workers.

I have had viral meningitis 2 times, as a matter of fact I have it now. I wish more doctors to watch this. I just wanted something for the pain. Once you've had meningitis you know if this is what you got if it does happen again. I told the doctor what was wrong and I was treated as if nothing was wrong with me. I was told "it could be a migraine or just a flu". I even told them what hospital I went to 2 years earlier so they could get the diagnosis and results from them. I refused a spinal tap, mainly because of the way I was treated. I could just not trust the person who would do it and then also the hospital I went to has a very bad rap for everything. If ever this happens again I will go to the first hospital that treated me, they are a well respected and up to date facility. In the mean time I sit here with my headache and wait. I will keep this video for my records. You have given me more information than the doctors ever gave me. I believe I now know more than they do. Thank you

Good video, just want to ad that normal opening pressure can be as high as 25 cm H2O in patient with high BMI do to additional pressure rise in relation with the increased mass that compresses the organs. Also the normal glucose level in the CSF is half of that in the blood (1:2, 0.5) so always do a sugar test right after the spinal tap; when is less than 0.5 of the blood glycemia look for bacterial (classically TB) and parasite infection. When dooing a spinal tap you can keep the first two tubes for additional test (PCRs, etc) if needed and send the following tubes for biology, pathology and bacterial test. Do the lumbar puncture before giving antibiotics (but do not delay them) and take additional tubes for other exams, once you give the treatment you can no longer correctly interpret the CSF study. Think about the situation when you have a bacteria/virus that is not responding to the treatment, what do you do next without the CSF already taken.

I'm trying to figure out how meningeal menococcus leads to amputations in some patients. I am struck that a CNS infection is related to loss of extremities. does iMedicine have a related video? thank you

When I was around 13 I got meningitis from a medicine I was taking. It lowered my white blood cell account very low and no one knew since I was taking it for years. I started getting cold like symptoms that progressed into flu symptoms. After almost a month suddenly I could hardly move my neck then they found what it was. Let me tell you spinal taps hurt like hell. My doctor kept getting it wrong and had to redo it 3 or 4 times....

Question: Why are college students dieing from this? What is the link between college students and dieing from Meningitis?
@juniorbrob8313
@juniorbrob8313 9 лет назад
because of congestion, most of the time college students gain very close contacts to each other. the causal agent of meningitis,especially bacteria, is airbone. secondly a college student with and early onset of meningitis might take it for a usual fever.hence a late medical help therefore the high latality. the link therefore is the age group - college students,and the airbone causal agent and the close contact college students have with eachother. st pneumonia is the comon agent in this age group,other agents ofcourse can do the job tho.

Tim Kasey maybe they have HSV1 and its turning into encephalitis. Young people get STDs at higher rates

Tim Kasey The social contact plays a part but also The bacteria that causes meningitis, Neisseria meningitidis, contains genes that allow it to use a small fatty acid in teens’ bodies, called propionic acid, to grow further. “The propionic acid is generated by other, strictly anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that do not need oxygen to live) that become more prevalent in adolescents
