Menopause Monday: Healthy Alternatives to HRT
With so many articles relating to the pros and cons of HRT it can be confusing to know what will help you best with your menopause.
Healthy HRT alternatives are something I get asked about a lot. Personally I use healthy alternatives to manage my menopause symptoms. I have nothing against HRT, and indeed have read a lot of reports which suggest its efficacy in helping us prevent various diseases.
In today's video I talk about HRT, the safer options of taking it as well as alternative therapies.
Always remember, even if you take HRT, a healthy lifestyle is a necessity to ensure you live a healthy and fulfilling later life. And beware confirmation bias. It's something we're all guilty of when we're looking for information to support our beliefs.
I'm curious to know your thoughts on hrt and/or alternative therapies.
This is the Tim Spector book I referred to: The Diet Myth

My understanding is that other organs take over hormone production after the ovaries are done doing their job. It makes sense to me that the reason women have difficulty with menopause is because these organs (adrenals, liver, thyroid, etc.) are not properly supported? I would like to see more info on how to create a healthy, normal, natural transition vs looking at menopause as a "disease". Thank you!

I love looking at menopause as a natural transition too. There are more of us out here doing that now. Menopause is a bit like childbirth - it's become medicalised. I'll do a video around the specifics of how the body organs take up the slack of the ovaries. Thank you for your suggestion.

Tried various natural remedies for menopausal symptoms but nothing worked. Not to mention they were costly too. HRT is what worked for me and I am still happily on it. Sleep well,still slim,not depressed. I still feel like I used to years ago.

Thx for your video. My grandmother took combo HRT and got BC, it spread, and she passed. Two of my aunts took combo HRT, after a few years of taking it they both got BC. My cousin who decided to go on it at 48 ended up with BC at 55. Then, I have 2 friends at work that took it, they both got BC, one passed away, the other is still fighting her battle. I used to work with this lady, she was vibrant at 68 and would always talk about her hormones. She ended up with ovarian cancer and her family said it was due to the hormones she was taking, she passed fairly quickly after being diagnosed. Then we have Suzanne Somers, always talking about her hormones.... well, she passed from BC as well. "These" are all my reasons for choosing to stay clear from HRT and to "try" to reduce the toxins in my life.

Calorie count with an app. And make a plan. How mutch calories do you need a day. And go under with as little as mabe 200kcal(or 500) a day and you will loose weight every month. Do some foodswaps for healthier alternatives. Sugar «detox» like choose a dark chocolate and eat less of it and put it into your calorie counting. So you can still have foods - but in your calorie counting. It is not hard. What is hard IMO is finding time and do all the planning. When that is done it is easy. Mabe have one day a week you prep.
@katehartley7566
@katehartley7566 13 дней назад
@@BernerVRshow the problem is that calories in vs calories out won't always help. If it's healthy, wholesome food you're comparing calories against, then it can work. Food is a message to our bodies and sometimes, it might be that gut health is off, so no matter what you eat or do, if your gut bacteria is out of balance, it will be hard to lose excess fat. Gut health is a great place to start when you feel you're doing all the right things.

I'm so glad to hear that HRT is helping you so much. And great point that you raise that hrt helps to give you the energy to start out with healthier lifestyle changes. Changes do take energy, both physically and mentally which I think is a really important aspect to remember. It's hard enough to make a healthy change when you're feeling relatively well, but burdened by the mercurial symptoms that menopause so "kindly" gives us, I hear you completely on the benefits of hrt.

I can attest to most if not all of what is said above and I added wild yam cream and did well until that 1year without a period and like a switch it got real..real fast! I had to get on HRT because all the herbs and life style and whole foods were only supportive. I needed estrogen patch and micronized progesterone. Only this helped.

It's amazing how so many people just want a simple fix. I understand wanting to feel empowered with getting symptoms under control, but I'm a big believer in being able to listen to your body. There are cultures where menopausal symptoms don't really exist, and yet it's so prevalent in our Western society. I've learned A LOT going through this process -- emotionally and spiritually especially -- and when I did try bHRT and HRT it honestly made me feel worse because I didn't have the root issues of my problems under control, namely adrenal fatigue and stress. Just as another commented mentioned, our other organs take over when it's the ovaries time to rest. Of course your body is going to flip out if those organs aren't functioning properly to take over!

Just a diff perspective here: ovarian failure cannot be “cured” with herbs, regardless of how healthy one’s diet and lifestyle are. Bioidentical hormones (non synthetic) are not toxic, they are literally exactly physiologically identical to what our body naturally produces. it is a matter of replenishing what the body made at Peak Health to create better quality of life as well as longevity. Women on Bio identical hormones have a 39% decrease in all cause mortality. The symptoms you describe are commensurate with needing hormone replacement therapy. Never let anybody gaslight you into thinking this is normal or that you have to live with this. You deserve a beautiful healthy life.

Same weight, same mood, same skin/ hair. What it did give me was MELASMA! I didn't realize the connection until my dermatologist asked me if I was on HRT so looking for alternative options for hot flashes. What if you are 63 years of age and you had last period at 51 years old, could u still take a small dose of estrogen and progesterone without big risk of breast and heart problem etc?? Or is it too late??? A small dose ???
@katehartley7566

Hi Sue, not knowing your medical history, I cannot say, however have you approached your GP and asked? I can't imagine a small dose would create any major risk for you. But I would ask your GP to get his/her recommendation for you. It would also depend on the reason for you wanting to take the extra progesterone and estrogen.

I can't say I have read all the studies, but I can say I have read a lot. Yes, falling hormone levels do affect the entire body, not just the visible symptoms, however not everyone wants to take hrt or indeed can take hrt. I'm living proof that I'm doing well without hrt. Bone mass is that of a youngster, muscle tone is good, brain fog is getting better, still have the odd hot flush but those went completely when I healed my gut.

@@vanitagomes3794 strength training is a sure fire way of increasing bone mass. I looked it up and saw that it contains titanium dioxide E171. Nothing healthy about that. I work in the food industry. The fact that Utrogestan contains this and calls itself body identical is laughable.

Don't miss the golden window to get the best benefits of HRT, which is 5 to 10 years after menopause. If you are already in menopausal stage for 5 to 10 years and want to start HRT? It might not be a good option anymore. We live 2/3 of our lives in the menopausal stage. The question is, can we keep up all the good work in order to be healthy in the next 40 or 50 years? I am afraid you are too old and have no energy to keep doing what you do right now to keep us healthy. So start HRT early in the peri-menopause or when you start experience of menopausal symptoms to get the best benefits of HRT. My 2 cents.

But this product is expensive for me as I live outside of the US --and right now my stock is finished and I have to save up to place a new order. Iam thinking I will just go to the pharmacy now and see if they have any of those probiotic/prebiotic stuff. We really do not have a variety here in my country and am just crossing my fingers to find something that helps.

prebiotics are veggies and fruit. It's the fibre that acts as the prebiotic. Probiotics can be found in raw cheeses, Greek yoghurts (beware of the so-called healthy probiotic drinks you can find in the supermarket as they are laden full of sugar which is no good for you or your gut health at all). My Menopause Monday today (26th Aug) is about gut health, so that might help you too.

The only thing that we will eat out is Starbucks coffee, Starbucks brownie or marble pound cake, subway vegetarian sandwich, Panera vegetarian sandwich, subway salad, and Panera Greek salad. All western vegetarian food, we cook at home and we also make fresh juices and smoothies at home, and since we are indian, we also make most indian food at home and we try to learn new healthy vegetarian recipes and cook them.
