MENOPAUSE TALK: Menopause Stories from Black Women and the Doctors Who Listen to Them

Let's Talk Menopause

Did you know Black women enter menopause earlier and have longer-lasting, more intense menopause symptoms? More hot flashes and night sweats (lasting up to 7-10 years), worse sleep, more clinical depression, and increased hypertension-all with a greater impact on their lives.
Unfortunately, your doctor may not know these facts either. Black women are the least likely to leave their doctor’s office with a prescription for hormone therapy or another effective treatment.
What will it take for doctors, researchers, the media-indeed, all of us-to take seriously the menopause and midlife health needs of Black women?
Our host, Dr. Sharon Malone, and our panelists, Rachel Hughes, Dr. Sameena Rahman, and Kamili Wilson, can offer some answers. Wearing their hats as doctors, menopause educators/advocates, and women seeking answers themselves, they will discuss their journeys to receiving the menopause care they needed, and how they are paying it forward to other Black women in midlife and beyond.

Thank you so much for this video discussion. As a 55-year-old Black woman experiencing a plethora of menopausal symptoms, I went on a quest to find out all the information I could about perimenopause and menopause. I was saddened by the lack of information, so I decided to do my part and speak out to other women. I created a Facebook group dedicated to menopause, and I share so much information. I encourage other women to speak up about their menopause journey. It has also encouraged me to write about my menopause journey to educate other women about the experience. I will be sharing this video with my group.

I am a black woman and I find it interesting and very sad that when I go on RU-vid channels with black women complaining and talking about how they suffer during Menopause, majority of them don’t even know that they are going through Menopause, they don’t even know what HRT is or they don’t even discuss it at all, even in the comments. They have just excepted that they will just tough it out and suffer for years….but when I go on RU-vid channels with white women and white doctors, majority of them are educated on Menopause and HRT and get relief from their symptoms instead of just suffering for years….

Thank you so much for this important discussion! I've been searching for menopause information for black women and RU-vid did not disappoint. "Peri" is settling in for the duration! LOL. I followed the docs in this video, subscribed to this channel and I already feel like I'm not alone. Gonna keep watching and researching because I need to be prepared to advocate for myself. Appreciate this! I will share with other GenX-ers in my circle.

Thanks for addressing the myth that black women and heavier women "don't get osteoporosis". I wish doctors were as afraid of malpractice claims if a woman is denied HRT and dies from a hip fracture as they are of patients getting breast cancer.

Thank you for having this discussion. I am just like Rachel and Kamili. I am going to through it right now and need to hear the stories of other black women to be encouraged about what I can do to feel better. I am going to seriously look into HRT.

Thank you for this very educational and informative talk about African American women and menopause! I learned a lot and it definitely helped me reduce my fears of HRT as it relates to breast cancer.

Very necessary conversation. Would like to see more conversations like this. Thank you for sharing. Your expertise and experiences. Would like to know if Kamili decided to try HRT. Also, what is your take on Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT)?

All women of all races are going thru it. Is it possible to move on from identity politics and just help others.

You need to recognize that human populations developed for thousands of years in their respective parts of the world, cultures, foods, climates, experiences, etc. This means that we all have unique differences in how things affect our health. It's important to pay close attention to each group's unique differences to better serve them.

Wow! It's a matter of black women's identity crisis . Black women are 4 times more susceptible to symptoms and diseases with no proper scientific reasons given. Therefore if black women can solve their crisis then they will be able to help other races. Shalawam!
