Menstrual Disc or Menstrual Cup - Which to choose?

After using a menstrual cup for almost ten years I've been loving my menstrual disc, a lot! That said, they're not for everyone. I'll be going over how menstrual cups and discs are different and why you might want to pick one over the other. I've missed making videos and have so many fun topics being covered soon here on PN so make sure you subscribe here. This video gets rambly but I'm a little rusty at filming so bear with me. I didn't dive into the specifics of certain needs that may make picking a cup or disc better, this video is aimed at showing the overall features of cups and discs and why those may lead you to pick one over the other. BOTH work for most people so there are hardly any instances where a cup is the only option, or a disc. That just makes it a little harder for YOU but in many cases it just comes down to "do you want to reach high into your vagina and/or get a little bloody?"

After trying both, and cups just never feeling good, always leaking, and slipping (also very difficult to insert), I'm Team Disc. Especially if you used OB tampons (or any you insert without an applicator), discs are very, very easy to insert. No messier than the cup was. As for the mess, if you have a heavy period like I do, you're going to be dealing with your own blood every month for 3-4 decades, go ahead and get used to it. Embrace your female body ❤️.

I've only used cups so far (considering discs for my personal elevator-from-The-Shining), but I very much agree with that last part! It's your body, you shouldn't be afraid of it. I'm trans and I can't speak for everyone but I am pretty comfortable with my AFAB body when I'm alone, and I think using reusable products since I started my cycles has helped with that.

@@dented_riddles9967yeah I’m on day 2 of using a Diva Cup for the first time ever. So for I’ve had no leaks, pain (other than a tiny bit taking it out) I’ve been loving it! This is the first time since I got my period for the first time that i haven’t leaked overnight and got my sheets dirty 😂. I want to try a reusable disc for the sex aspect. But my thing is like you said you’re pretty comfortable with your AFAB body, when people who have periods use tampons we get blood on our hands (or at least I do 😂) so getting some blood on me doesn’t freak me out in the least.

For me, cups were so incredibly difficult to insert, I tried and tried for a bunch of cycles with a few different cups and it was so painful and uncomfortable. Could not get insertion to be comfortable at all. Then I tried a disc. I got it in painlessly, effortlessly first try. I was shocked. I recommend anyone who is petite with a smaller entrance to give discs a go, the size of insertion is way smaller in discs, and its so comfy and easy.

Just use some drops of LUBRICANT on the upper part of the cup before inserting. It slips in so much easier. It was a game changer for me. Before I came up with this idea, it was very painful for me as well. I also try to push the cup a bit over the cervix to make sure to blood has no other way then going directly into the cup. I am very satisfied with it. The only issue I feel sometimes is that it makes poo*** a bit difficult. I am not sure if a disc would solve this problem.

Great video, the only thing I would add is that a huge difference between a cup and disc is that some discs can be worn during sex for a mess free experience while a cup cannot be worn during sex. That is a huge plus for many women, especially towards the end of their period.

This video is so helpful! I’ve showed it to tons of people already! 😅 I’ll never stop promoting discs they are a game changer. Though I will say when I first started looking into reusable menstrual products discs seemed far less daunting than cups. There’s not as much of a learning curve when it comes to folding and inserting discs and the fact that cups seal can be kind of intimidating. A bonus to discs is that you can try out a disposable option (that’s cheaper and sold at target) to see if you like the concept first. Just know that the disposables don’t fit exactly like the reusable products which are softer and shape more to your body. I started out with disposable discs from pads then months later bought the lumma disc. It’s safe to say I’ll never go back.

Thanks for this! I'm researching discs since the suction from cups has become too painful and irritating as I progress in perimenopause. You covered the advantages of discs more thoroughly than other videos I've seen and I appreciate that. Other videos were clearly pro-cup, which is fine that it works for them, but I think the suction from any brand/shape of cups is too irritating with the hormonal changes I'm dealing with. I will be trying discs with my next period!

I've always been intrigued by reusable period products and the menstrual cup intimidated me. I kept getting TikTok ads for the Flex menstrual discs and it seemed like a good intro for me. Also, I discovered the diva cup and have been using it very happily. I hope this someone else - always make sure you are trying to insert a WET cup. If I don’t rinse my cup and insert it while it’s still wet from the water, it will NOT go in. It was literally a game changer for me. I couldn’t get the cup in for 6 months. Each period I tried and struggled and literally wanted to scream and cry and punch shit in frustration. It would make me the most angry and fuming I’ve ever been. Literally. So always make sure your cup is wet and it will make inserting it 10000000 X easier! 💛 Some women carry a small little tube of lube with them in case they are in a public bathroom and can’t keep it wet enough trying to carry it from the sink back into the stall. I hope everyone has luck! 💛

Doesn’t that just go without saying? Have you not had sex yet? Clue…that’s why women get wet when aroused. Ever try to have sex with a totally dry vagina? Kinda painful no? You’ll find this out if you are having sex after menopause and don’t use HRT. Just get one of many lubes out there.

I was/am a cup user over 12 years, and though I found the Merula cup and loved it, getting probably 80% leak free with it, cups still just never worked on my first couple days when my cervix sits very, very low. I simply could not get the cups open at those times. I'm now on my second period with the Lumma Large and am having a great experience! For me insertion is so much easier...I used to be in up to my knuckles trying to get my cups open, and pinching/scraping myself up.

Switching to cups helped tremendously! Been using them for years now and continue to recommend to others. Wasn’t easy at first of course, but practice makes perfect. Took about 3 or 4 cycles to get the hang of it. Got use to timing certain days and the flow of my first day. First two days are always kept in for 3-4 hrs. Increasing the time depending on the third day. Around the fourth and fifth day it’s every 6-8 hrs. Rarely an accident anymore. Sometimes I beat my period since they love to randomly pop up lol🙌🏽 A fragrance free water based lubricant will help it slip right in and suction with a tiny tug. Deep breaths help😉Keep in mind our bodies need time to adjust to something new. I use Saalt soft(reg & small) and bfree.

However, I alternate with my Eureka cup with a tuck in valve in a large and that's a game changer for a heavy flow with all day emptying in public without having to remove the cup made in Barcelona Spain. I was really motivated to find a reusable period product. I started with cups first and I have since stopped using it. It shocks me that so many videos say cups are easier because they have been such a difficult process for me. I have so much trouble inserting it correctly and removing it is a nightmare. It feels like I’m going to rip every time removing my cup- and I have one of the smallest ones on the market. My hands slip, I can’t get a good grip, blood spills. I just had to stop using my cup because the comfort while wearing wasn’t use the discomfort while removing. I have considered reaching for a menstrual disk but all these videos saying they’re more difficult have put me off. Did anyone have trouble removing cups but find the disks much easier? I just wrote a lengthy comment on a reddit post about menstrual cups because I needed to vent but also to thank someone else for reminding me that discs exist and could be something else I could try. But then I came here and a few other places and felt even more discouraged hearing that discs are more difficult and advanced than cups as my experience with my first cup has also been a nightmare! Both insertion and removal are awful but removal is so much worse and honestly the stress and the struggle of it is NOT worth it for me. Insertion isn't "difficult" but I hate the process of it, and removal.. just like you guys mentioned. Its slippery, impossible for me to get any kind of grip on, and the suction aspect just adds to the awfulness of it. No matter what position I'm in, how relaxed I am, what tips I follow it just never goes very smoothly and I actually end up pinching and jabbing myself a lot in the process from all of the slipping and having to fit two fingers in to try and grasp the thing. Kush God: if you haven't already. I recommend the FlexCup slim. I am a beginner cup user. I have sensitivity too, a high cervix and a heavy flow. The FlexCup has been amazing for me. I've been using it for about 3 months now. And I love it. What's nice about it, is it's unique looped stem, which literally works like a pull string on a tampon and breaks the seal for you. So you don't have to pinch and try to grip a slippery, messy base. You just slip your finger into the loop/ring pull and give a gentle tug and the seal is broken, then you can slide it out nice and easy for virtually no mess emptying. The stem is also super soft and super flexible, so you don't really feel it at all, once you have the cup positioned right.

I’ve tried 3 different cups for 4 or 5 months and was quite disappointed that none of them would sit perfectly and not leak. I don’t know if you guys have a more watery period sometimes, but I found that when it was not thick, I would have a lot of morning leak. I also had difficulty finding out my cervix height (I thought it was low, but now I’m not certain) which made it difficult to choose the perfect option for me. I’ve bought the boots cup (it’s an UK/Ireland pharmacy brand) size A and B (which were nice and soft, very comfortable but a bit harder maybe for a beginner to know it was all open) and then bought a Lunette. I loved how the seal feel was noticeable with the lunette, but found so so rough to remove it made me abandon the brand the next cycle. . Now I just bought a Cora Disc and I’m currently on my first use and I found super easy to insert, and a smaller surface area somehow(?) I’ve only had to try twice to insert successfully (the first time I could feel the disc in me and had blood, skin and bigger clumps both sides when I removed. Not a cute look.) The second time tho I checked with toilet paper and apparently no leaks. I’m happy to give reusable menstrual products another go. Did not want to go to menstrual underwear or washable pads, so I hope this one works. . Any thoughts or doubts I’m here to talk about it, from beginner to beginner (not as close of a specialist as Kim).

Leaving this here for anyone who’s looking to try cups/discs. When I first started learning about cups; I was conflicted as hell because I’ve had a baby naturally; however.. I’m very petite. So for a long time I didn’t try because I couldn’t decide if I should be going for the cup sizes that are for post baby women or not. I recently bit the bullet and decided to go with my gut and go with a smaller (non post baby) cup. It was the right decision! So moral of the story; trust your gut. Do your research and give it a go. I’m on day 3of my cycle using a cup; the learning curve wasn’t as drastic as I thought; and I’m never going back! 😂🎉

I prefer discs and find them more intuitive. There’s no mistaking when it’s in place. I tried a cup and was too scared to push it too high and suction my cervix. Too low and it doesn’t work right. Like someone else said as a person used to tampons the disc seems easier.

i just ordered my first menstrual disc after using a cup for going on four years now and it‘s really incredible to see how much discs have evolved within the last couple of years. i‘m getting one from a dutch brand, which is great because i live just a couple of kilometers away from the netherlands so it‘s almost shopping local. but as i was choosing an option i liked, i really did notice how many options i had to choose from. most of them still are basic discs but i found some that had stems and even one that had a loop for removal, that‘s the one i went for. i‘m excited to see how it will work for me and i hope it gets to me while i‘m still on my period.

Thank you for these videos! I tried a cup and a disc after this video and found that I could not get my cup to open after trying a few folds and tricks. So I then tried the disc which I actually thought was going to be the more difficult to insert, but it stayed put on the first try, no leaks! I found it very comfortable and easy to insert. However, taking it out is super messy! I have not figured out how to reduce the mess. For that reason I will try again to get the cup to work.

I actually think that the disc is easier than cups. I feel like a cup is way more intimate and invasive with insertion. To me the disc is not so internal and you do not have to take your finger and run it all the way around the cup to make sure it’s open. Plus I love the auto dump of a disc so I do not have to remove it throughout the day

@@Dream73993 Kim has a video all about auto dumping. Basically when you have a BM or Void, your muscles dislodge the disc enough to dump the majority of the contents. SO you don’t have to remove it to dump it through out the day. It just dumps each time you use the restroom

I spontaneously used a cup for the first time on my third day. It was a small that was recommended for first timers and not only did it hurt to put in but I had to do it multiple times because it didn't go in properly. Then i was just super aware of it and couldn't walk properly because of how uncomfortable it was. It didn't leak though. Taking it out was another painful process because it was like the inside of my vagina was dry and the suction was really strong even though I was squeezing the bottom. I just cleaned it threw it in the drawer and went back to my painless pads😭. I've always used pads so I don't know if it hurt because it was a menstrual cup or because I've never used an internal period product before.

I've already tried a basic small cup that worked okay for me, but lost it with my luggage. And now I'm thinking what to purchase, and about the disks, but I have one question that you don't really mention: the pressure. So... I have a low cervix and a heavy flow, but I also want to pee all the time when I use the cup. It does get easier on the 3rd day, but I wonder if a disk will make that pressure even stronger? It was overall alright, and I could go to the toilet with it no problem, and it barely leaked, but I disliked how it sucked around the cervix, making its "neck"(?) longer after long wear. So, basically, the disk should be a perfect option for me. Could you share your experience, please?

I also wanna say that trying to insert a menstrual cup was v daunting and painful bc I just couldn’t get it to twist open and create the seal! and to break the vacuum while the cup was up there and slippery was a NIGHTMARE, I couldn’t even reach in with my fingers far enough sometimes to break the seal without a huge amount of discomfort. I’m trying the disc for the first time, so fingers crossed it doesn’t leak. the instruction manual that came with it didn’t even tell me that I had to tuck it behind my pubic bone but I kind of did that instinctively bc it felt like it might slip out otherwise

Ive used the cup for about 3 years until i started the pill again and now where i stoped taking the pill im trying the cup. It feels like discs are completely new in germany cause there arent a lot of videos and you cant buy them in shops but with cups its difficult too and you have to order them online. My first try with the disc was horrible and i wasnt able to insert it but after one night with my cup and a fresh start on a new day it worked on the first try. Its my first disc and maybe ill try more over time but for now i think this one will work. With the cup i had to buy another one after one period cause the first one war to soft and leaked all the time (it was the only one i was able to buy at a store cause there werent any options and it was one day before my period started). The cup helped me to leran a lot about my period cause i was able to see how much blood there was and how it looked this isnt pissible with tampons.

It sounds like you might be dealing with vaginismus, which is an involuntary tensing of the muscles making insertion painful. There are many ways this can be treated, so don’t be afraid to tell your doctor about it. As someone who’s in a similar situation I’ll say the disposable flex/soft discs are a piece of cake compared to the cup but you may still feel some discomfort while wearing em the first couple of times, the most important thing is to be relaxed.

Not to b weird but if you’re a virgin it’s probably hurting because you haven’t had your hymen torn and if you can’t use tampons swiftly for the same reason the cup is DEFINITELY gonna b a pain for a while till your body adjusts but in my case the disk was a much smaller, faster, and painless insertion in comparison to the cup so I’m interested in the lumma disk 🙂

I have a question about period length depending on the cup/tampon/disc. I heard cups, probably because od the suction they create, they make the period shorter. I think it does work like this for me. After long time being with cups I lately used tampons (I left the country forgetting my cup) and suddenly my period was 7 days again instead of 5. I'm thinking to go for a disk because my periods are pretty heavy, but I would rather keep my periods shorter (and less painful!) What is your experience with that? Are discs affecting the period length?

I have a high cervix. I also have short fat stubby fingers lol. And I have Multiple Sclerosis, which makes it hard to "bear down" or have control over your pelvic floor muscles. One time, all of those factors combined created the perfect storm- my disk was completely stuck inside of me. Over the course of about 24 hours, I continuously attempted to remove it (after already having worn it for the full 12 hours) but to no avail. I was starting to panic after it had already been inside for over a day and a half. I ended up having to ask my boyfriend to remove it for me! We were both laughing and completely in shock about what we were doing, and it was so embarrassing! But at the same time, it sure was a bonding moment for us 😆 (That story aside, I definitely love menstrual discs, and it was a total game changer when I discovered them.)

The only problem with menstrual cups is that they are so wide in the canal that they cause major discomfort when peeing and puts pressure on the bladder..

Depending on your anatomy that can happen, but it's also about the firmness and shape/diameter of the cup. Softer or narrower cups can alleviate this often. Or use discs which are far less likely to cause bladder pressure.
