I hate how mental disorders are glorified and are almost used as something trendy... especially anxiety and depression. I have Clinical Anxiety and Depression and Diagnosed between November of 2017 - February of 2018. Honestly, this glorification of it has worsened my symptoms and even with a therapist, I have seen small improvement of the span of 7-8 months which is how long I've seen my therapist. This glorification of mental health needs to stop if you want the ones actually sick to start to recover. It honestly hurts... a lot.

I am now living on my own for university and it is so difficult without my parents taking care of me and dealing with panic attacks on my own when they happen although it has decreased since high school. But I don't talk to anyone at university and I feel so alone because I just can't talk to people and I hate when people who seemingly joke and use anxiety as a synonym for a feeling and throw the word around without knowing how life altering it can be and casualise it's meaning and struggle.

So true!! I'm a med student and we regularly have to talk to and examine different patients as "training". During our psychiatry section we went to talk to patients with BPD and afterwards I was so ashamed of how scared I had been beforehand. It just goes to show how little realistic knowledge the general public has about things like antisocial disorder, BPD, schizophrenia, DID, etc. Most people don't even know that with the right form of support you can lead an almost normal life as a schizophrenic person and way too many people think that DID and schizophrenia are the same, that BPD is the same as being bipolar, etc etc.

I have a really strong dislike for Shane's docuseries. It rubbed me the wrong way that they were called documentaries in the first place because documentaries take YEARS and tons of research. I couldn't watch any part of the Jake Paul series after he threw the word Sociopath out there, he knows the significance and stigma around that word. Shane used the word carelessly and used fake science for views, diagnosis over the internet is not a thing.

I know that documentaries aren't about objectivity, they are a means to display a message powerfully. They do however take research, if they are intended to make a real impact. Shane's series resembles more of investigative journalism because the focus was him, and his journey, not the work itself.

Idk when this series came out but my guess is gonna be shortly after the suicide forest debacle. Idk if Jake Paul actually has aspd but his content is tacky anyway and appeals to a certain psychological demographic that might skew sadistic, since it's mostly immature stuff and pranks and him being disrespectful like how he behaved at the fish market in Japan, treating it like a playground instead of a legit place of business for people and local fishermen! Borderline personality disorder is one of the most stigmatized mental illnesses out there. We're seen as crazy, volatile people that will only hurt, betray and abuse the people in our surroundings. And for sure, some BPD people without self awareness never get to the point where they start working on their behaviours. But many of us are in such incredible pain and fear that we don't have any control over, but still try our hardest not to let down those we love. With the right treatment, many get to the point where they no longer fit the symptoms of BPD, and are in a sense "cured". But if people constantly abandon you because they assume you are crazy and will only let them down, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

It's a great thing you brought up the stigmatization of other "scarier" illnesses. It's amazing that on a wiiiide platform such as the internet, we can hear about depression and anxiety (even tho the stigma obviously isn't fully dispelled)! On the other hand, many other disorders I feel are not treated with the same compassion as the aforementioned. We still need A LOT of work on the ways we discuss personality disorders, dissociation/derealization, psychosis, addiction, etc. Many of the things we say ("crackhead", "psycho", "triggered") can be inadvertently harmful to those with more stigmatized mental health issues. It'll take a lot of work, definitely. Some youtubers I watch/used to watch but still find cool for talking about these things: AlexMax Han: talks about DID, sometimes trauma, overall positive mental health messages. Maya Imani Amani: topics mainly revolving around her life with schizophrenia, but also speaks on her personal traumas, bipolar disorder. Often very raw, so approach carefully. LikeKristen: videos mainly about anxiety and depression, but she also talks a lot about PTSD and self harm. Laura Lejeune: pretty laidback presence to her vids. She often shares her own recovery stories of eating disorders, self harm, and depression/anxiety.

Even if someone's a mental health professional, you can't and shouldn't try to diagnose someone who's not your actual patient because casual socialization doesn't provide the proper environment for a diagnose. Also, friends and family can't be your patients because you're previously biased towards them. If you think someone could benefit from some help (don't we all?) the responsible thing to do is point them to the direction of a fellow professional, maybe someone who's specialized in what you suspect they can be struggling with and for the love of god keep your suppositions to yourself at least until there's a formal diagnose.

@@Kirgaby you're putting words in my mouth because you want to argue. I'm not saying to DISMISS people who feel like something is wrong. I NEVER SAID THAT. YOU said that. I'm merely saying they need to make distinctions between self diagnosed and professionally diagnosed. Lots of mental illnesses overlap in symptoms but they ARE different and you could easily be misdiagnosing yourself altogether because you are not an expert! I'm also NOT making assumptions about whether or not a person is legitimately feeling bad. I'm saying that people who have NOT had the years of training and experience to diagnose mental illness should always remember that. Depression, whether or not it has a label on it, is STILL depression, but at the end of the day I always valued the assessment of multiple mental health professionals because I only thought I was stressed and maybe had anxiety. Turns out I had anxiety and host of other mental illnesses as well, and they needed professional treatment! Even my own suspicions about myself were way off. And I was suffering because of it. The WRONG diagnosis could lead to DEATH. Especially if said person is taking/not taking medications, prescribed or not. That is why it is SO important to get professional help. If you suspect you have something wrong, REACH OUT. There are free online services and other opportunities depending on where you live. Don't just self diagnose or make uneducated guesses. Actually connect with the people who want to help you. And the truth is, mental illness is being trivialised. People love making off hand comments about being depressed when they do not suffer from said illness, particularly on social media for clout and to boost engagement or views. It's something that has occurred on RU-vid countless times and has been criticised by prominent RU-vidrs. Fashion labels and indie brands make clothes that romanticise and thus mock mental illness sufferers. TV shows and media misrepresent mental illnesses, like 13 reasons why, then have the audacity to call their toxic trash fire groundbreaking and progressive. And that's the tea. I'm greatful people are more open regarding mental illness, but there is a downside to the way the labels of debilitating conditions are being liberally and haphazardly thrown around. A self diagnosis is not enough to treat mental illness, and I speak as a sufferer who is extremely grateful to be alive today.

I was recently diagnosed with OCD which as I talk with my therapist I see it’s something I’ve lived with my entire life... OCD is SO different for everyone and very nuanced!! To start off, I am the LEAST neat and organised person I know! I’m a disaster! But I still have the obsessions and compulsions that have at times destroyed my life and other times I could barely tell I had anxiety. As someone who has had some form of anxiety ( diagnosed with GAD, OCD, excoriation disorder, panic attacks and depression that came from dealing all this other crap) my entire life, it’s interesting to hear people talk about it. I don’t always see myself in these people, but it’s nice to know I’m not the only one! It’s weird that this is a “trend” now though. I’ve been like this my whole life and now is when it’s okay and normal to talk about. I like the progress but it has its issues! Medication has done me wonders and I feel so blessed to have been able to go on it!

I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder and anxiety during my freshman year of college and I honestly have to thank RU-vid for saving me. I remember watching videos on depression at the time and it was what gave me the courage to tell my parents and get the help I needed. I used to go days upon days wishing I was dead and thinking of ways I could kill myself. But when I saw these videos of some people talking about their depression it made me feel less alone. I've noticed that there is a trend more with people opening up about mental health these days and I'm glad for that because it's literally what saved me and perhaps this can save many others as well and encourage them to get the help they need. But on the other hand I don't like seeing how sensationalized it's becoming and how many youtubers are obviously using mental health for click bait and views.

For anyone reading this... Just because someone has "Low-Empathy," it doesn't make them a monster! I know plenty of people with low-empathy disorders who decide that acting in a generally moral way is just better for society as a whole, and better for them, because they're treated more kindly in turn. People with low empathy can do all sorts of jobs that softies like myself just can't do, like veterinarian work, or caring for the terminally ill. It DOESN'T make them a horror-movie """"psycho"""" who murders indiscriminately.

7:00 Yes, that's spot on. People should aware that mental health issues or other disabilities ARE medical issues, and should be diagnosed by ONLY medical personnels who are qualified in that field. I have depression and autism, but it doesn't mean that I know enough to classify someone else whether they have or not. The closest I can do are to suggest that they MIGHT have disorders and to encourage them to seek medical helps. You still need real and qualified doctors to diagnose you.

Going full time content creator can also be a soul-destroying job depending on the type of content you produce. If your channel is based on drama, clickbait, or inauthenticity, then over time this wears you down mentally. You also might objectify yourself in order to optimize for clicks. RU-vidrs are simultaneously expected to be “real people” and “profitable products”.

As someone with anxiety, I'm simultaneously saddened and comforted when someone I admire opens up about struggles with mental illness. I'm saddened because mental illness suuuuuucks, and I don't like that this person or that person struggles with it. I'm comforted because it reminds me that I'm not alone, even when the disorder is so different from mine. I've been watching the vlogbrothers since 2008, and every time John references his anxiety and OCD, I feel that. When boyinaband talks about his depression, I sympathize. I'm so glad that he and JaidenAnimations made a song about eating disorders--both the thick of it and seeking to get better--because that helps de-stigmatize eating disorders and helps viewers who may be struggling. As for even-more-stigmatized disorders, I've recently subscribed to two channels run by people with DID, The Entropy System and MultiplicityAndMe. Unlike other disorders (btw I do know people irl with bipolar disorder; I say that because you mentioned it in your video), I don't know anyone with DID (as far as I know). I just knew that "whatever the media says about it is probably wrong." Their channels are mainly informative, and I've learned so much about DID from these people.

I agree with almost everything except the first point! "Professionals" misdiagnose patients all the time, and telling people to trust them more than they trust themselves can be kind of gaslighting to people who have experienced that. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge advocate for therapy and psychiatry, but just like with any profession, there ARE still bad ones out there. We should go with our instincts, and if we feel that our doctor is misdiagnosing us or not taking us seriously, then that's a red flag and we need a second opinion. My best friend was misdiagnosed with ADHD for years, it turns out she had bi-polar 2. Another friend was misdiagnosed with bi-polar 1 when she had BPD. I once had a therapist tell me my eating disorder in 8th grade was a result from not washing the dishes often enough lol. Sorry for the rant, because I seriously love everything else about this video!!!

completely agree, i had to go to my family doctor 3 seperate times to even get a referral to a therapist because he didnt believe i was depressed for some reason. I was literally the lowest i had ever been and that experience gave me such bad trust issues with doctors and mental health professionals. Not being believed when you are sincerely crying out for help when even mustering up the strength to seek help took all your energy is one of the worst things ive experienced. Trust yourself, you know if something isnt right most of the time. Fight for yourself.

What do you think about those videos claiming: You're not depressed, you're just sad (I've seen a few of those) or claiming that antidepressants don't work and it's all just a matter of mindset. Personally I think that's super dangerous, because I feel it could stop people from getting help.
@Mike-bl9dv
@Mike-bl9dv 3 года назад
I've never been on any antidepressants but I've had some dark times. Usually bettering my physical health (sleep and outdoor time running around) are the best remedies for me and I find brings me back to where I want to be. But just because i find my way out without medication doesnt mean it's for everyone. I dont make videos, much less any content about mental health, but if i were tasked to do that I would try to speak from the angle of "this is just me, but try this and this first, cut back on alcohol if that's something that could cause it (I am not talking about full alcohol addiction, that's another thing, just cutting back on mild alcohol use), be as healthy as you can and if that all still doesnt work, then time to see a professional..." because professional help can be expensive and before you do that, it might be worth it to consider balancing yourself out first and trying to improve in areas if there are gaps there that can be improved like diet, exercise, all that lot. But in my hypothetical video I'm talking about hosting, I would never outright denounce the credibility of professional help.

i think that the problem is also that instead of looking around and acknowledging that a lot of (especially young) people struggle with mental health issues in this time (bc of things like capitalism, the competition state, alienation, uncertainty, the problems w social media and so on) and in this trying to find a sort of common understanding or solidarity, some people on social media like to frame it as a thing that makes them "special" or something to use for views. a lot of people struggle w depression & anxiety. its an epidemic at this point, and using those words to promote your own individuality or some kind of brand is not really helping anyone i think.

I’ve been reading a book by Ken Norwood titled Rebuilding Community in America that really opened my eyes about how important meaningful human relationships are to our mental health. This book proposes that as house sizes get bigger, we live increasingly isolated lives. Depression rates are increasing and it could be because of the way we’ve structured our society. Maybe a reason why social media is so popular is because we’re all yearning for more human connections. We can’t always depend on our families to provide all of our emotional support we need. So this book is all about how co-housing/small village communities can bring together diverse groups of people that wouldn’t normally socialize. Like an older widowed woman sharing their large home with a single parent family. It’s also great for the environment!

Brené Brown said something that I think about a lot when seeing videos like these: "vulnerability is not sharing on social media" (not an exact quote but something to that effect). I think that if you truly aim to share in vulnerability you have to opt out of screens and editing tools and boundaryless sharing. Anyone can act out their mental illness for attention or gratification but it's not the same as being real, I know because I made the same mistakes thinking I was being vulnerable when I wasn't. I had problems but I only showed what was comfortable for me to share and not the real painful stuff, you know? It's not the same. Being vulnerable is to share within healthy boundaries and to *take a risk* because you're not sure that what you say will be well received. When we share on social media we usually calculate the response we will get for sharing certain stuff and it's so easy to create the sort of response you want from people by adjusting the way they will see you. You can't do that in real life when you are being real with someone you trust in an intimate emotional situation. You can't share a real connection with thousands of strangers over the internet whom you only know by their likes and comments, that's not intimacy and therefore vulnerability can't happen and thus none of the social media shares are truly raw and real. Though it's easy to mistake it for something real, I think about that when vloggers end their videos with: "I love you guys", I don't think you love me because you don't even know me. And if you did know us all intimately- would you still claim to love us? I don't think so.

I think most everyone’s first anxiety/panic attack is the worst if not one of the worst attacks you’ll ever have. I’ll never forget the first time I had one. I was a majorette in the marching band, halfway through our season and my junior year, I’d been doing it for 6 years at that time. I never really got nervous, let alone anxious about performing and I wasn’t feeling that way on that day either. We were marching down from our school to the football field right before the game and all of the sudden out of nowhere I just started crying harder than I ever cried, hyperventilating, shaking, my throat tightened and so did my diaphragm and I absolutely lost my shit. I had to fall out of line and went immediately into my coaches arms because she knew there was something wrong. It made absolutely no sense whatsoever, wasn’t a big game or performance, nothing out of the ordinary. Looking back tho, I was in a mentally and physically abusive relationship and at the point where both of our parents forbidden the relationship and any and all contact, however- we still were sneaking around to see each other and this was around the time I started abusing prescription painkillers which could also explain it. It was a hard time for me as a teenager but I’ll never know or understand what brought that on. I’ve had many since then and have learned to cope and deal with my anxiety, thankfully and with the help of great therapists and support from the people who love me most. We need to destigmatize mental health as a whole tho and help others understand it’s okay to need help and it’s okay to accept it.

I don’t get why someone would use, glorify or say they have a mental illness when they don’t. If you feel ready to talk about it, do it. Open up to a close one it doesn’t even matter whether it’s your mom, dad, significant other or just a friend. Talk to a professional, get a diagnosis and start working on your problems. It takes time, strength and a lot of effort, but it’s worth it. I’ve been suffering from depression and anxiety since kindergarten, so I know how shitty that is. Fortunately, Germany has great healthcare, so I have the help I need and I’m grateful for that. And I’m sorry for others that feel or go through the same. I wish everyone the strength they need to overcome their struggles. Don’t self diagnose, get help from a professional. I wish you the best. 🥰

This video is so important. I was diagnosed as bipolar when I was 18, I'm now 24 and I still struggle with people's misconceptions of it. A lot of people have their own thoughts on certain disorders or they make jokes about certain disorders, for example, the amount of times I've seen posts on facebook saying 'this weather is so bipolar' or 'my mood is so bipolar'. It honestly pisses me off so much. Yes I do have mood swings like everyone else, but when I'm having a 'high' moment as I like to call it, I'll spend thousands of pounds on things that are not necessary, which puts me into debt, I'll start crazy projects that I'll never complete, (I was convinced I could build my own mini home/start a documentary series/quit my job and start my own business), I can't sleep because I have so many thoughts going round my head. I've been hospitalised because I got so low I stood on the edge of a bridge with a noose around my neck for three hours in the pouring rain. I've overdosed on my medication a couple of times just to stop my mind from running. Even if saying this changes one persons misconception, I'll know it's worth it. Thank you for making this video, I honestly wish more people were like you.

I love these discussion videos and your words are so articulate. I agree with a lot of things you said. I like how people are talking about mental illness or health more now instead of shaming or demonizing people with mental illnesses but I also think normalizing too much can be a downside because people will self-diagnose or diagnose other people by watching one or two videos on a mental illness. Also I think it’s important to understand the different types of stigma. For example people with Depression or Anxiety do not get the same type of stigma as people with personality disorders, dissociative disorders or people with psychosis like DID, BPD , schizophrenia and more. People with Depression or Anxiety from my experience and from what I’ve seen get called overdramatic or that they are just doing it for attention while people with schizophrenia or personality disorders for example are seen as dangerous, abusive or violent. Everyone experience is different so this isn’t true for everyone but this is generally how it is and not all stigma is the same.

Two more things: 1) Pushing people out who don’t fit the textbook definition of that particular mental illness instead of accepting that people’s disorders manifest in a spectrum. I’ve been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder of the lowest degree which explains why I’ve never had an anxiety/panic attack. 2) People who self-diagnose themselves with depression when they might just have seasonal depression or situational depression. If your disposition changes with the seasons or depending on what’s going on in your life then you’re not depressed, you’re just a human being going to though a trying time.

Those of use that do suffer from depression and or anxiety wish we could just forget about it. Ur approach was great. And I highly recommend finding a great therapist and if u need meds, a psychiatrist to manage them. Not all docs are qualified to give them and therefore don't follow up on the effects or if ur compliant. Many insurance companies in the US are horrible about it. They stigmatize u from the jump. Many people can't get qualified help cause it's not covered or only covers 6 visits a year. What? So not right. Anyway, thank you so much for addressing this and starting a REAL discussion about it.

Yes, medication can help and you are not less for needing it. I had to try a few different ones before I found one that worked but I got through it with my amazing family and the odd friend and a great counselor. I tried a therapist but they kept trying to tie everything into the fact that I have no want to date anyone and it was so weird I walked out of the office, which is something I totally encourage you to do if a health professional who is supposed to listen to you ignores what you are trying to say. As a christian I decided to see what local churches offered and ended up meeting with a really great counselor. I always felt the extra pressure to try and be happy because that's what the general north american christian culture pushes. It was so refreshing to talk with someone who both went to university to become a therapist and understood the fact that my beliefs are an important part in my healing. I've done my best since then to share some of the passages we went over on my facebook to let people know that if you are depressed and a christian that's okay. We were made to be able to feel all emotions and just because a few of them knock you down doesn't mean you're defective. For my fellow christians out there, ask your leadership team, pastor, or priest if they would be able to take the topic on as a sermon because it's one of those things that we hear about from the world's point of view but rarely do we hear about it in church from a biblical perspective. Oh and if anyone tries to give you grief about how you must not be praying enough tell them to go study Job because they're being about as helpful as his friends

My first panic attack was in middle school and it woke me up too. I was watching netflix with my mother and dozing when I suddenly woke up with a start. My heart was absolutely sprinting. I asked her if she was shaking her leg, as she was prone to, but I realized it was my heart, which caused me to panic more. I had been struggling with anxiety related to health for about two months at that time. My mom told me to take deep, painfully slow breaths and try to calm down, which worked. I have never had my heart speed up like that again, but I fight anxiety to this day. For three years it was horrid and unbearable, but now I only get anxious every now and then. So many people were supportive and my mom pushed me to face what made me anxious.

I remember seeing Charlie McDonnell’s I’m Scared video once and thinking it was crazy a RU-vidr was able to vulnerably express about those kinds of feelings online like that. He’s often been quite open about those kinds of things in his life and I appreciate that. I’m glad there’s this kind of landscape where it’s ok to talk about these feelings now. Takes a lot of balls to talk about it.

I have PTSD and anxiety. I used to have what was basically a mini heart attack. It started to become so frequent (more than 2x a week at it’s worst) and it was so scary. The doctors couldn’t find what was wrong and eventually wrote it off as panic attacks. Thankfully, when I went to get my stomach checked for ulcers, I had an attack that was monitored and they found out what was wrong and I’ve had surgery that almost completely fixed it. I just have heart skips now. Sometimes though, I’ll have really bad anxiety about my health , like even if I get dizzy when I stand up too fast, it sets it off. I’m healing though. It’s less overwhelming.

I'm sorry if I am spamming you, but ever since that Kibbe's body types video where you said you don't feel ellegant and sophisticated, I keep seeing you in these symetrical and relaxed soft classi lines and it just blows my mind how much we can have a totally different perception of ourselves to other perceptions of ourselves - if that makes any sense

You forgot about people who have mental illness getting triggered by all the negativity online. I often fall into people’s posts on Instagram and other social media that trigger my anxiety/depression/eating disorder and it makes me feel worse and I can be completely happy and then see one of these posts and I get sooo triggered

last year my friends "diagnosed" me with depression and my respond was always "you're not a professional you don't know what you're talking about." and now i feel very depressed and out of place. though i wouldn't say i have depression, i still have those thoughts in my head that bugs me everyday.

Man, only a few minutes into the video and I feel like sharing this. Thanks for creating the safe space needed to discuss this kind of stuff. I was unofficially diagnosed with PTSD when I was ten - only unofficial because the psychiatrist in question was to ‘personally involved’ to be allowed to give an official diagnosis. Something I only just came to understand recently was the symptom of Dissociation. I cannot remember a period in my life when I looked in the mirror and genuinely saw myself. There was nothing *wrong* with my reflection, I knew it was mine, but it just... didn’t connect with it. I recently learned what Dissociation actually is, and learned that it can be a symptom of PTSD, and came to understand that that’s what I was dealing with. A certain aspect of Dissociation, specifically Depersonalization. However, once I learned that, I began to experience Dissociation as a whole more frequently - or maybe just noticed it more frequently? I’m unsure which. I have a therapist who I have spoken with in an off for the past year or two (after finally being able to tell my family that things were going downhill again), but I haven’t seen her since before I had this revelation. I’ll probably schedule something with her soon, just to get her up to speed on this new development, but I don’t know when that will be.

I read the title of this and knew it would be good.. but honestly yeah i can relate about having panic attacks in my sleep and then going to a doctor thinking there was something wrong with my heart.. I was also only about 8 years old when it started so I had no idea what anxiety was :/ crazy to think it can start at such a young age!

i dont think theres necesarily anything wrong with self dx-ing provided you do enough (good) research, esp. if doctors arent accessible to you for whatever reason. Good research can include reading/watching multiple perspectives of people with a disorder/condition, reading articles about it, or even getting yourself a pdf copy of the dsm v (which psychs use to diagnose!) and reading it carefully. obviously theres a danger of misdiagnosis/overdiagnosis, but it can also be really helpful to find a community to talk to or coping methods that can help. (it should hopefully be obvious that self medication is dangerous and that you shouldnt do that) EDIT: 100% agree that you shouldnt diagnose others unless you are their doctor.

Mai Li Ra the thing is that even doctors can’t diagnose themselves so the average person definitely cannot. And there’s a difference between someone saying “I think I have...” and “I have...”
@tunelessmelody

@@895princess yes theres a difference between a formal diagnosis and a self diagnosis, and they serve different functions but self dxing can and does have an important place in peoples mental healthcare. also depending on what it is, its not necessarily intensely difficult. i thought i had depression bc i had (insert symptoms here) and when i finally made it to a psych she asked if i had any mental illness and said "i think i have depression bc of [symptoms]" and she goes "yep sounds like u have depression" and put it in my file. she didnt interrogate me or make me sit thru [x] number of sessions, she trusted that my understanding of my own symptoms was accurate.

@@tunelessmelody I think there is also the aspect of while self-diagnosing depression or anxiety is understandable, and as someone who doesn't support self-diagnosis, I can brush off people doing it for the most part. I don't like when people self diagnose with any disorder, but depression and anxiety can be seen as more cut and dry for symptoms. I really take issue with the people who diagnose themselves with disorders like OCD, ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, etc. People have confirmation bias and therefore cannot see the full picture. Also, in your example you used the phrases "I thought I had" and "I think I have". Those are perfectly acceptable and useful ways to phrase it. It's recognizing that you weren't completely sure. Recognizing that something is off is a very important step in treatment. (And I do realize that there are a lot of barriers to treatment which is a big issue that needs to be dealt with.)
@tunelessmelody

@@895princess i have just seen a lot more people self dx (even less cut and dry things, as you say), find a community, and be able to be helped by them to either manage symptoms, understand symptoms, or, get advice on seeking professional help. It is much more common to see someone describe a symptom and someone else who has it explain what it is than to see someone just go decide they have a certain disorder. I've never really seen someone incorrectly dx and then have that have serious ramifications. Obviously there's some confirmation bias there but I've seen it be useful too much to just dismiss it. (It's particularly common in the austistic community since many psychs just wont diagnos it unless you fit their notion of what it should look like, which is often a young white boy who has trouble socializing.)

Amanda M. You know that’s when you go to get a diagnosis they just ask you questions about yourself, right? Self diagnosing is completely plausible.

Man, I'd be really interested to see a study regarding these issues and freshmen year of either high school or college. I wonder if it's common for these issues to be exacerbated by those life events. I personally had an INCREDIBLY similar situation to yours, where early to mid freshman year of college I started getting panic attacks (like you, I thought my heart was all fucked up). It suuuuuuuucked. Thanks for creating this vid, it was really eye-opening.
