Hear from Kmart staff Chav, James, Leila, and Tanya, on the support they have received and seen others receive at work.
Transcript:
CHAV: Oh, you have to feel supported at work, because if you don't feel
supported then you wouldn't want to turn up to work. My name is Chav, and I'm a Kmart worker.
JAMES: My name is James, I'm a coordinator at Kmart. We do daily checkups for our team members, daily roles. Just pretty much what we're doing daily, we'll tell our team members what's up.
LEILA: I'm Leila. I am a sales assistant, which just helps out with our managers.
TANYA: I'm Tanya, and at Kmart CFC we pick and pack all online orders in New Zealand. Every morning when we get here before we start, we have our huddles. And they check in with us if we're okay, stuff like that. And then if they feel or they sense that something's off with us then they'll pull us to the side and have a word with us.
JAMES: I went through a little bit earlier in the year and I had to see a manager about it. They helped me through it. It was a bit of financial and a bit of car troubles that I was going through. It was emotional support that they would help me with, and just a bit of on-the-job training just to help me when I was missing.
They'll get us onto mental health programmes through KiwiCare. There's other ones as well - Youthline Helpline. But I really do think they help us.
LEILA: I would say on a day-to-day basis there are times that workers need a manager. An incident actually happened, and it was to do with shoplifting. Someone was very mean to one of our checkout people. And then when they went to the manager, they kind of did it in a group setting, so our manager was in front of us. She acted on it straightaway. She was like "Are you okay, do you need time out?" and then the person was like "Yeah I'm okay", and then after that the manager was like "Oh I'm going to get straight onto it". And I actually watched her do it. She emailed all the other managers, let them know, and I feel like we did pretty great.
CHAV: Our mental health here is pretty good. We have 10 minute debriefs, and we just talk about how we felt today, if there was anything that we want to improve on, or anything that we felt challenging. We can always talk about it with each other.
TANYA: To me, I feel it's important, coz if you don't feel important you don't want to come to work. Really, just don't really care about your job. But here they make you feel important, and it just makes you want to do better.
