Meran is a small city in South Tyrol, which is a province in Northern Italy, that borders Austria. Historically, this town was known for its thermal waters and one of the most prominent guests was the later Empress of Austria, Elisabeth (aka Sisi).
Prominent Tyrolean architecture with arches and painted walls and ceilings make this old town a charming delight. Small, locally run boutiques offer unusual gift ideas and local delicacies.
The walk starts at a northern elevated point at the Renaissance Ponte Romano bridge. Here you can see the Passer river and the beautiful nearby villas. Then you walk downwards and enter the town via the age-old stone gate. The narrow passages lead you then to the church and square. It's about 9 am and the town is just waking up. The walk ends at the Kornplatz, which is the town's large market square.
