The last of the petrol pipes goes on the Mercedes W123 230E, but does it still leak fuel and will it start now?

The vacuumlines are for doorlocks, gearbox and shutoff the motor...applying vacuum on different pipes will activate different controls, greets from Belgium, Bob, nice project with patience of angels, strength Brother!

You had the compressor fired up!! But didn't use it to figure out the pipes lol. I have to admit it's frustrating not seeing fuel being sent to the fuel rail and the camera didn't pick up the sound of fuel being sent then returned as you would have heard it. No fuel leak is also a frustration because it would at least give you a clue. The only thing I can suggest is either you don't have enough fuel in the tank, after all tanks never drain fully via the fuel pump or you've managed to cross the lines somewhere. I'd stick a couple of extra gallons in the tank to be sure there's enough fuel then I'm start from scratch. Pump to fuel rail line, return pipe to tank and not bother about the breather for now. EDIT: You *COULD* have a blockage in the sender line from one of the old pipe .....Use the compressor to clear it.

I’ve tried the compressor trick now - that was..entertaining! You’ll like the next video! Another viewer with one of these has just sent me the correct layout so I think it will go back soon now, and the old pipes I was copying may have been wrong

Your mystery vacuum line in the engine bay may well be part of the cruise control system...

I have a 82 230CE so a very similar car. The fuel system is original and functional on my car. I can take some pics if you like. One thing to note, as far as I know the pump only runs for a short time if the engine isn`t firing. There are some tricks for jumping the relay that controls this in order to force continuous pump operation. This might be worth checking out too. Keep up the good fight. You`ll prevail in the end. Cheers. James from NZ

If you happen to have it on a ramp for any reason it would be great to see a working system!

@@furiousdriving Hi. I had a good look under the car. Sorry for the long babble - I hope this will make sense. I couldn`t get very good pics as the lighting was very bad! However, I was able to chase all the pipes running to the engine. So the fuel pipes run in a group forward to the engine bay. 1 small and 3 larger pipes with rubber mounts to hold them. Looking from the rear of the car forward the smallest one is on the left. The smallest one is the brake line; I`m guessing that one is self-evident but useful as a position reference. Then the next one over is the one that runs to the weird vent valve just in front of the passenger side rear wheel. This one should be connected to the left hand of the two pipes that from under the fuel tank. The next pipe to the right is the fuel return, and should run to the right hand of the two connections under the fuel tank. Finally the right hand most pipe is the fuel feed and takes a long curve around behind the differential mount to connect to the left hand connection on the fuel filter. Again all left and rights are as viewed from the rear of the car looking forward. I`m not sure how best to get them to you, but I some photos as well as some info about how to bypass the pump relay for testing. I can`t see how to message you on FB, except via these comments.

@furiousdriving this link www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mercedes+W123+Fuel+Lines+(Rear)+Replacement/33386 has a picture (listed as step 6) showing the two fuel pipes from under the fuel tank. The left one should go the vent pipe , the right one the fuel return. Hope that helps. James

James, I owe you a crate of beer, that was a perfect description and looks like it worked, there is DEFINITELY fuel getting to the injection system now! Ignore my earlier request, Ive figured out how to find the order!

Is that an overflow pipe from the tank? Top or bottom of tank? Or a return feed overflow. Mysterious Mercedes pipe

Did you check the following things: 1.) If the car has any fuel in it? (check) 2.) If the pump is pumping fuel from the tank to the front of the car? (the fuel pump wires could be the wrong way around and then you pumping the fuel back to the tank) 3.) If the fuel filter isn't clogged up? 4.) If the (metal) lines aren't kinked anywhere? 5. And then, if you checked all these things: Is there any fuel coming from the engine bay to the carburetor? Also, if you did not already have one. (Buy and/or) check you Haynes Manuel for a diagram of the fuel lines. It should be in there somewhere... *Also, ask in Mercedes Forums if you hooked up the lines the right way. I'm not a Mercedes w123 mechanic so I can't tell if it is all connected right. But they certainly can with the knowledge.* Just post some pictures of it. They are often willing to help! Good luck!

All good suggestions, but unfortunately Ive been through then all! I topped up the fuel again today, the pump and filter are new and have been pumping fuel all over the place, and Ive changed the little filter in the engine bay and had clean fuel at that end so there WAS fuel reaching the fuel injection distributor. Ive got an amazingly detailed workshop manual but this is too basic for it to consider worth printing!

Have you thogh of puttng a test piece of pipe right from the pump to the fuel injection at the engine? might be an issue somewhere where you cant see? I used to have a W124 230e kept cutting out and stalling until the fuel injection system was take apart and thorougly cleaned. You do know theres a trainer inside the tank and they can cause havoc with fuel pressure if blocked up with gunk You will get there eventually ;) Instead if joing to what there already jerry rig up you own lines following this diagram ;) As long as the ones on the diagrame go to where its swowns at thw other end ;) www.benzworld.org/forums/attachments/w123-e-ce-d-cd-td/314760d1276944195-1984-280-fuel-lines-diagram-anyone-fuel-lines-123.030.jpg
