I thought I was the only crazy one, I have an 82 380SL and I am looking to do the same thing. Looking forward to see how the adapter plate is going to work but very interested to see what engine mounts you are going to use.
I Did A 350 small block into a Benz and I had to do exactly what he said...I had to have the drive shaft cut and balanced...custom make a cross member ( eazy )..the biggest thing was finding A starter to fix" I ended up with 3 different ones " I finally bought one online..398$$$ Bucks..It's made for tight spaces & V8 swaps.." Now" I'm looking to do A ML 350 to A 5.3 swap? I'm 55yrs old" I guess I love for people to Say No Way...I use stock exhaust pipes with Flow master 50..Every one would ask..What's under the hood?
I'm glad to see that you continue to enjoy your 450SL whilst making your plans and designing your solution! It's important to ENJOY a car by driving it (no matter the condition), and I'm pleased that you're not sidelining your car until "some sunny day in the future when all the mods are done". Too many projects go nowhere when that happens. "Some sunny day" is not guaranteed to all of us. Revel in this whole process! You'll be glad you did! Make your dreams come true! I have a couple concerns.. I think the biggest issue is that 6.0 is gonna tear that trans up and if the trans holds up something else will give but still I love the idea I just think you're gonna end up blowing through u joints and axles and if u use the stock converter is it gonna be right for the ls? Idk all the what ifs is why ppl go with gm running gear front to back but what if it works flawlessly? I'd love to see a real transmission and the correct number of pedals (3) in all cars...
I have a quick question about your adapter plans. First tho the GM trans you showed is not a LS trans it’s a pre LS trans the bell housing is Different yes the bolt pattern is similar but it continues all the way around instead of the bottom cut off like the one you showed. Ok my question is what are your plans for the starter? You can’t use the 450SL one and there is no place for the GM one on the 450SL bell housing. Also the adapter you ordered is going to be missing the bottom bell housing bolt holes. not being rude hope you don’t take it that way I’m going to do a 6.0L th400 swap on my 82 500SL.
Do you have any updates on the swap? I'm planning on doing the same thing to my 78 240 SL. That adapter plate seems like a great idea. How did it turn out?
Great video . I've been thinking about putting a Chevrolet 350 c.i. in a R107 . I plan on following your build. Is there anyone here in the comments section that has done or doing a Chevrolet engine swap in an R107 , that can give me some tips on this type of conversation ? I haven't decided to go with a Chevrolet transmission or the R107 transmission. Best Regards
That transmission sat for 20 years is it any good...I am doing a small block Chevy, turbo 350 transmission swap into a 1972 350sl best of luck with your project.
That is an alloy block trans. The bolt pattern is not the same. Some he's are but not all of them. Email me I can give you some info you need. BirchsGarageMB@gmail.com
