Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing - Recommissioning an Automotive Icon | Tyrrell's Classic Workshop

In this episode, Iain introduces us to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, a car that has every right to be considered an automotive icon and considered by many to be one of if not the first examples of a 'Supercar'. Iain delves into the history of how this car came to be, a true race car for the road. This particular fine example is in for recommissioning after a few years off the road, so after undergoing the necessary work, it's time to gently bring the car back to life on the road before seeing if that legendary performance is still there.
Note: @04:20, Iain's third point was meant to be that it allowed the engine to be mounted lower, rather than repeating the first point. Such are the perils of filming in one take and from memory!
Thank you once again to everyone for the overwhelming reception of these videos and for all the support of likes, subscribes and wonderful comments.

Therefore watching the relish, the joy, the satisfaction you express AS WELL AS the history lessons, putting these cars in the context of their time- finally watching a Master Mechanice use the simple tools (a tube up to the ear for listening) to perform complex tests (a true learned art and skill!)... As a fan of WW2 aircraft, I was impressed to learn that the BF109 had two, Bosch fuel pumps, the same as in the 300SL Gullwing. Spitfire’s Merlin motors used carburettors, and these would starve the motor or be way too rich under different fighting conditions, such as inverted flying and especially in a steep dive. “Miss Tilly’s orifice” was a restriction device that solved these problems.

Sadly so very true. Ask any experienced MoT tester. During my MoT "while you wait" appointment sat in the viewing area, a broken suspension spring rolled towards me. I asked what was that from. The friendly tester pointed to a nice looking Mercedes Estate parked next to my Rover 620ti being tested.. Some of the things he finds are shocking and undermine so called German engineering and reliability myth now. That since the main core of German car manufacturers decided to enter the volume car sectors mainly occupied by the likes of GM and Ford Worldwide as well as Japanese stuff. That they did very successfully as a glance at any UK road or car park would soon confirm. Thus unit costs means somethings had to suffer... and it shows. Move on a few years and my immediate next door neighbour has a new Chinese built MG ZS EV parked where previously a Mercedes or Lexus stood previously. He told me that he is delighted with his MG EV and his final comment... "I'll never go back to petrol or diesel cars again". Now that is some change of mindset!

Iain you did an admiral job of giving the viewer an excellent feeling for a Gullwing. Right down to an accurate sound track of the big pipe exhaust rasp, so special to the 300SL. I'm a retired Star Technician award winner, multiple times. I serviced all M-B's from the 1950's up to 1990. My first 20 years of working with M-B, then 27 more years with BMW. I never felt the same sense of heritage, prestige, factory support, engineering and build quality with BMW. I'm reluctant to part with my 300SL manual, parts book and operation manual because of the great memories they give me. Oh my.... There aren't too many car vids on RU-vid that make my knees go weak, slack jaw, and actually buy a lottery ticket, all while watching. Stunning car, a glorious showpiece for the skills of Tyrrell's Workshop.

I saw one of these in the metal once. As a postgraduate student, I attended a scientific meeting in Davos, Switzerland, around 1986, so 37 years ago. The Gullwing car I saw then is probably still being used in rallies.

I have always loved the 300 SL on looks and reputation alone but watching you drive the car through the onboard camera has made me love the car even more. Unless I win the lottery I will never be able to afford one but I still adore this car for its pure class.

My mother absolutely adored these. Talk about the most exotic car us southerners had ever seen! It started a lifelong obsession with most of the SL series up to the end of the 80's. There was a gentleman here in Houston who owned one one these original Gullwings back in the early 70's that we used to drive across town just to get a glimpse of. He had a lot of neat stuff, but the gullwing was pretty much his daily driver for 20-something years

Thoroughly enjoyed that. Well done. Twelve year old me travelled up to London by train in the mid-1950s to attend the Motor Show at Earls Court. Castle Class steam locomotive hauled was another fine experience for a twelve year old schoolboy. Soon after arrival found the Mercedes-Benz exhibition stand but... NO 300sl Gull Wing! What a disappointment! After the Exhibition, wandered around London looking at the sights. Guess what. Parked outside the Dorchester Hotel, a silver 300sl Gull Wing. There is a God after all ... Last time I saw a silver 300sl was about twenty five years ago passing through Andoversford in Gloucestershire. It was being driven preciously slowly, actually holding me up in my MG Montego Turbo. Now there's a thing. Truly fabulous car and to see one in the still somewhat WWII impoverished for most working class folks in 1950s UK was a very special treat for a schoolboy. Soon after the London experience, saw another one parked outside a Hotel in Cheltenham, schoolboy me passing on my Bike... maybe the same one. Cannot say. Still my all time favourite car. Double ...👍..👍 from me. So, if it had not been for that visionary North American Entrepreneur offering to fund a thousand, that fine example of 1950s Motoring would be even rarer ... possibly extinct now except in Museums.

I have heard and read many people describe the unobtanium that is the Gullwing. Being born in the early 50s the Mercedes SLs always interested me, from the Gullwing and it's roadster sibling through the Pagoda and on into contemporary models. The Gullwing will always be special and this posting sets a standard for automotive video journalism - Iain's description of the Gullwing makes the car come alive - through it I can see, hear and almost feel the car and come to an appreciation of it's advanced design and technical implementation and the joys of classic supercar maintenance. Bravo!

I was sitting in one of these yesterday - a wonderful experience. So beautifully built and finished - the switchgear still so precise after all these years. Didn’t drive it though, so it is wonderful to hear and see you driving this one. Wish my brand new E Class was made with as much quality- oh how Mercedes’ has fallen!
