Mercedes-Benz G-Class: It gets under your skin 

I love the G-Class. It's an all around vehicle that can be used for every and any occasion. Kids or no kids, road or no road, rain or shine, the G-Wagon is highly respected in my eyes. Hopefully one day I'll have one of my own

I've had this car for 6 months and I haven't regretted once! Getting in it every morning still excites me :)

So tough even Mercedes Benz it self can't kill it!

I read a few interviews of Gunther Holtorf where he said that the reason he chose the G-Wagen at the time that he did (the late 1980s) was that it was the last year that they made the car 100% mechanical. After that it got a load more electronics which, he said, he wouldn't be able to repair in the field. So the reason it has gone that far with no major problems is probably because it has no electrics to fail...

I have one from 1989 with legendary om602 turbo diesel engine. Mine is not a car for comfort ride, literally it is like driving a truck, a beautiful truck, noisy, heavy steering, rouged and harsh feeling. But I don't understand, it leads me into occult, I just love it. For years I could easily sell or trade in my other cars, but not my G. Planing to buy a used W461 with om602 turbo diesel from late 90's (less electronic, the better), but not easy to find it here and the price is just unreasonable, really unreasonable.

if you comment here comparing the G to a Range Rover, then you've missed the point. The G-Class isn't about the ride, or the comfort, or the technology, or even the speed, it's all about the story, the looks and that beautiful Mercedes-Benz badge on the front that adds even more history to this amazing car.

Love this MB! But I've been hearing that the reliability is beyond disastrous...

Those Gs that broke down on the outback trip, was mainly because they used low profile tires on corrugated roads in high speeds. Funny thing is they looked surprised when the suspension failed. One even broke its headlamp because another driver backed up when parking and failed to spot another G-Wagon behind him. How can you not spot a huge vehicle parked behind you?! Shows the moronic levels of the drivers.

This model is a great cruiser as well as off roader. Way faster than 108mph listed.

In Kazakhstan people do love the G wagen, especially the AMG version and it was a big surprise to find that we have more Gs for sale then in Germany or even in the States. I was quite astonished by the fact providing that the KZ's population is only 14m. And still suprisingly was to see that prices are also bout the same while other cost much higher. Ex, Merc W203 2002 = 16k. In US it is 6-7k as well as in EU

There are 2 problems with the G500 and G63's. The price is another German War Crime. The Gas 12 MPG is a crime as well. Now if they would make a Civilian Army like G300 to compete against the Jeep with just the basics - now you would have something.

I always wondered why land rover never made the defender a hyper SUV, it had almost exactly the same credentials as the G-wagen. Not that I want them to do that but I'm surprised they didn't.

Firstly - The G is developed primary as minitary vehicle by suggestion of the Iranian Shah but till the time it reach the production line the Shah is get down after revolution... just after that the MB management deside to made civil version as well. Second - first G55 AMG is produced 2001 with naturally aspirated engine and 354 bhp (349 for the US market) in 2005 came the supercharged version. Third - Geländewagen meaning is more All Terrain Vehicle then cross-country - Volvo made the cross-country vehicles ;) Next time do you homework better ;)

There will be an updated G-Class coming for 2017 or 2018. The new model will be much more civilized and optimized for civilian use. The G is simply too important for Mercedes' image and it brings a level of cachet that you don't find very often. I would certainly like to drive one.

I love the G-wagon, but the price is ridiculous. For half the price of the G63 you could have just about any offroad SUV out there, and they would be more luxurious and just as capable offroad.
