This is the part 1 of "Mercedes-Benz: Neue S Klasse Produkt Demo" (HDP-1547) from a Sony-made high-definition 12" HDVS videodisc. The HDVS disc format was designed to be a highly portable 12" laserdisc-derived media format for Sony's "High-Definition Video System" or "Hi-Vision" back in the early 1990's! Back then, high definition was a little different from how it is now. It was analog (not digital) & close to but slightly different in resolution to the 1080i picture we receive over the air today as it was technically 1125i/1035i. Before the earliest high-definition media was available to the public (via satellite, MUSE Laserdisc, & W-VHS tapes), Sony and other companies began shooting footage, doing research, and, showing public displays of high-definition television. There were three main ways of storing HDTV (or HDVS) at that time: Reel-to-reel tape (HDV-1000), cartridge tape (HDV-10 "UniHi"), & 12" Laserdisc-style discs (HDL-5800 / HDL-2000). This footage came from one of the Laserdisc-style discs.
These HDVS discs could only hold a maximum of 15 minutes of video (on CLV discs, even less on CAV discs)...but it held uncompressed, raw high-definition component video! Take that, Blu-Ray!
This video is a compilation of footage regarding the conception & design of the 3rd generation of Mercedes-Benz's flagship full-size luxury car series, the S-Class (W140) in early 1991. This video uses true HDVS footage, along with CG film scans, to show the design, operation, & performance of the chassis, engine, suspension, transmission, and more. The video also shows, what I assume to be, some of the engineers and designers modeling prototypes of the car along with pre-production artwork. Later footage emphasizes the design of the interior and exterior featuring some very clean yet distinctly 90's shots. While the footage was shot beautifully, the video originally featured no audio & the editing of this disc is rough. It was produced by Steiner-Film.
It is currently unknown what the purpose of this disc was, but segments shown in this disc have been spotted in various HDVS applications such as early HDTV sales material by Sony themselves. (Do you have more information? Please comment below!)
Enjoy this very special HDVS footage of what many consider to be the last true S-Class by Mercedes-Benz!

This was recorded off on a Sony HDL-2000 Videodisc player which outputs analog component (1035i) video. Uploaded in the upscaled 4K ProRes for extra clarity!
NOTE: The disc originally had no audio. I've added some selected tracks from Mo Foster's library music album, "Technicolor."

Amazing quality. From a lot of your HDVS content the image can be very very slightly on the soft side, but the computer generated sequences show just how pinsharp the format could be. Astounding stuff as always - thank you for archiving these. Sure I've said it before but I never thought I'd see any HDVS content until you appeared!

Thanks for the kind words! It should be noted that post-1989 (16/9, HDD-1000) masters like these were stored digitally as uncompressed 1920x1035 resolution (all I/O was analog however), but these HDVS discs derived from the masters I've been capturing along with the older (5:3) pure analog recordings have an uncompressed 20MHz bandwidth (approx. 1300x1035) so I would assume that the original master tapes would be even clearer & have very little softness!

Richard what TV are you watching on? If you can,try recent model Sony with Reality Creation,it gives more detail and perceived sharpness to older content like this

Wow, this is the best-quality video I've EVER seen from 1991! It has such an amazingly clear yet not harsh picture! And the CGI graphics are absolutely exquisite! Thank you so much for posting these pre-HDTV videos! It's great to see the precursor to today's television technology!

The non-CG camera work in this video is astonishing. It’s so dynamic with the motion controlled shots of the engine and components. Feels like a modern product presentation.

I wish the HD footage of the 1994 World Cup opening ceremony still exists. I heard it was saved on D_VHS but it seems lost to time

There was no D-VHS in 1994. It could be W-VHS.

00:49 Is that thing in the center console an LCD screen for an infotaintment system? If it is, the fact that this was shot in HDTV isn't the only piece of evidence that made them ahead of their time. Everyone was in living in 1991, but Sony and Mercedes-Benz were living in the ''2010s OK, I watched part 2 and that center screen didn't make it into the final product (they didn't have the technology yet, I guess).

The lighting, CG, and motion control shots in this look strikingly similiar, if not the same, as the ones shown in BMW's promo. Were both promotional videos produced by the same people?

Great eye! Yep, both were produced by the German firm, Steiner-Film.

What type of screens were videos like this shown on back then?
@ReelyInteresting
@ReelyInteresting Год назад
Manufacturers such as Sony, Ikegami, Barco, and others were producing high-resolution/HD CRT monitors as far back as the early 1980's. In addition, Sony had HD CRT front and rear projectors for sale, starting with their first 1986 HDVS line-up. All for industrial use & very, very expensive of course.
