After 12 years they leak between the valve cover and the gasket due to heat from the exhaust manifold. For just a few bucks more , better to use genuine MB.

Agreed, Goes to show when upgrading to hesders its always best to retain any factory shielding & consider a strong ceramic coating for heat protection.

Good info to know! I did a light detail on my SLK engine bay today and it came out pretty good. Got about 99% of the leaves and grime out but still have to do real deep clean on it.

My valve cover seals we're starting to leak at about 25,000 miles. I don't know if there's a factory defect in the gaskets, but it shouldn't have been that early. I'm at 65,000 and they're leaking pretty bad. so I'm going to change them. My oil consumption is also pretty high and I don't think it's because of the valve cover gaskets. Looks like I use a quart of oil every 300 miles. Might be an O2 sensor or belt tensioner problem. I haven't looked that closely. Thanks for the tip on the valve cover gaskets. I'm going to be following your lead.

Thank you, this was very helpful. I bought two gaskets from Amazon that said they were Genuine Mercedes brand but when they came in they were in a plain unmarked plastic bag all waded up. I used your video to compare the ones I got to your gaskets. They did indeed look like your Genuine gaskets. I'd be curious if your Victor Reinz gaskets had the Mercedes part numbers or logo imbedded in them like the Genuine ones.

I also ordered VR gaskets from FCPeuro a while back, but since my C55 is still bone dry around the valve covers @157k I never bothered with them. I have since heard this info from multiple sources and will for sure use MB gaskets when I do the job, it was nice seeing a visual comparison though so thank you!

also not same rubber (as can bee seen by light reflection)... rubber quality is the most important thing...

Placed ordered for MB original equipment valve cover gaskets from fcpeuro. They came in a small ziplock bag with part number hand written on it. Paid genuine price, not sure if its genuine part. Thanks for posting.

I think normally when they do that the original packaging got damaged.

@@PANZERSGARAGE On a 96 E20 is the OEM valve cover gasket 1 piece or 2? I want to make sure I get the right one. Also, do I need rings when having it changed? (doing my due diligence before I go to the mechanic)
