I've been a fan of the C63 AMG ever since its inception, particularly in this pre-facelift form. And with used prices (albeit on higher mileage examples) being strangely cheap given the sheer performance of these cars, the temptation of owning one is real.
Which begs the question - what is this 460 horsepower rear wheel drive German muscle saloon actually like in real world conditions? Well, let's take to the streets of Ashcott in Somerset to find out...

Nice summary. I own a 2011 with the Perf Pack (and LSD!). Had it 6 years and it now has 50 thousand kms/31K miles. It's production # is after the headbolt change, so that's not an issue but one that, as you suggested, should be addressed. Otherwise, no issues. This car remains a joy to drive, even all these years later. It's fun, crazy, dangerous and smooth - all depending on how you want to drive it. It is, without doubt, an experience. In an era of increasingly generic driving experiences, the W204 C63 is iconic. Own one if you're on the fence about buying. This type of drive will never come around again - and at least you can say you were behind the wheel of a legend.

Pre facelift P30 package came with lsd. And facelift P31 it was an option. I’ve owned 2 pre facelift C63’s and prefer it with the P30 pack with lsd. Complete different beast!!

PFL c63 owner here. Not all pfl suffer from head bolt issues my 2010 performance package is out of affected range, the issue isn't as common as the net would lead you to believe. LSD was an option on pfl & fl. If there is any difference between fuel economy its down to the different gearboxs as the m156 engines are the same. There's no difference in head room they are the same shell. Faulty/worn cams are arent just pfl, its the same m156 engine through out the whole range. Overheating is actually an issue for fl not pfl down to the bumper design.

Fully agree. For me a big plus of the pfl is the better heat management. I've seen many fl owners complaining about overheating in fl models. Apparently it's indeed related to the different gearbox and changed front.

It’s the front bumper on the fl that’s not allowing much air in while driving that causes overheating issues.

I’ve just bought my first pre facelift AMG saloon. Absolutely love it and when I was looking it HAD TO BE PRE FACELIFT. Retro interior, more aggressive looking, totally agree

For me the biggest benefit of the pre-facelift is the better heat management and the reliability of the gearbox. The headbolt issue is a bit of a concern, especially on LOWER mileage examples: if your headbolts survived the first 100K km they're probably fine. Apparently about 1/1000 cars suffer from it, typically below 100K km. Although the facelift gearbox is less reliable and has a tendency to overheat, it certainly is quicker, so that's a plus for the facelift models.

Haha, definitely give them both a drive before you make the final decision. Possibly even the Lexus IS-F as well, but I'm yet to drive one of those.

I bought a 2012 Mercedes-Benz cls 63 amg one owner from Carvana 62128 original miles I took it to Mercedes-Benz and had them give it a look over and they told me that I bought a nice car!!! I have noticed that you are correct about burning oil not crazy but depending on how I am driving I bought a 3 year 36000 mile warranty for $ 4756 that covers everything I have a 2017 Mercedes-Benz 300 E 4 matic and I love the brand not many car manufacturers put there name on who built the engine from the factory and I love accountability!! Nice 👍 video well spoke and informative

Put some long tube headers and a tune on it and then drive aggressively. You'll want the limited slip differential.

The post face-lift AMG has a better transmission MCT 7 speed. Post face-lift has headbolt problems, and cam issues. The P31 post face-lift has more HP and when tuned can output 538hp and 500ft.lbs. I have one. The interior is better with more options. A better all around car.

This one didn't feel particularly slippery. I'm sure if you floor it the back end could break loose, but it felt grippy at most speeds

Owned my 2008 p30 package so lsd etc 75 thou on clock for 2 years now, if your going to buy one you have to love all its quirks potential quirks , yes it might cost you a few grand to put stuff right but thats the love and pure driving experiance of an older performance muscle car , the stock sound is second to none which is intoxicating just driving at low speeds is a head turner! just have a car account and save what you can for potential problems then there is no problems, drive and enjoy the smiles per gallon ; )

I had a 2008 and thought it was a hoot to drive. Playful fun. So much so, that I concluded that the later versions must be even better. So I sold the 2008 and got the facelifted 2011 "507" twin nostril on the hood edition as the ultimate version of that model. It was certainly more refined and yet it lost most of its playfulness and (to me) became more of a heavyweight bruiser. Strangely I missed the twin power bulges on the hood of the earlier car to the stangely sculpted version of the later version. I am now in the market to get an earlier version. I am convinced the earlier car will become a sought after classic.

Absolutely. I'd be interested in getting one myself if it weren't for the cramped driving space. Just a little too small for me to be comfortable

Maybe its standard on the facelift (FL) in the UK, but in the US the LSD is an option. One of the biggest differences b/w the pre-FL W204s and post mid-2011 cars is the headbolt issue. It plagues all of the earlier model cars except late 2011 models, while the facelift has this issue resolved. I would never buy a pre-facelift car for this reason alone. Additionally, the transmission on the pre-FL models is horrendous. It takes forever to shift and pretty much ruins the car. The improvements from the new transmission in the facelift model cannot be overstated. It shifts dramatically faster, particularly in manual mode, giving the car notably better 0-60 times than pre-FL. You also get RS mode for launches, which is lacking on pre-FL. Finally, the interior of the FL model is leaps and bounds better than pre-FL. I've owned both a 2011 sedan and 2012 coupe, and the 2012 is night and day better.
