Spot on Peter amazing help. I changed the actuator the throttle body as they where the fault codes coming out then turns out it was the swirl flap and kept blowing the 15amp fuse under the bonnet as soon as I unplugged the clip was running as normal thank you
Hi Peter Thank you so much,it worked, the resisters arrived this afternoon I removed the ducting placed the resister into the 2 middle holes , what I did do was to just fold over the ends of the resister to make it a tighter fit in the 2 holes . I then wrapped it in duck tape ( other tapes are available ) put it back together ,I then cleared the fault with my diagnostic tool and started the engine, when the fault started I could only rev the engine twice it then went into limp mode , so today on the 3rd rev 6000 rpm no problem. I cannot tell you how thankfull I am ,after having the car on the Star diagnostics , the Mercedes specialist said the swirl flap motor was not working and he recomended that the turbo should be overhauled, all in all the best part of £500 just for parts plus labour and my car out of action for a week. The only problem I have now is what to do with the 199 resister that I have left ,when I ordered them I was thinking I was ordering 2 ,a extra 1 just in case I dropped 1 or damaged 1. I am prepared to send them to a Mercedes owner having the same issue and may be he/she can send them to someone else ,it would be interesting to see how many other people it would help, how far afield they would travel and more importantly the thousand of pounds we would not be paying to Mercedes. Thanks again
@@billyb7168 Hi i got them of ebay, i have just checked and they are not available , if you have an address i will be more than happy to send some to you , when i ordered them i ordered 2 it turned out they come in strips of a 100 , so i have 200 lol. Regards Peter
I bought a 2012 sprinter van that had a resistor in the swirl motor connector and it ran fine until I removed it. Actually drove from Chicago to Southern California without a hitch. As fast as I wanted to go. It will be interesting to see after replacing the swirl motor if the mass air meter code stays on. Thanks
Peter I would like to extend my great appreciation for helping me with this exact problem. Initially I tried cleaning the connector but that didn't cut it. However a 50 cent resistor solved all my headaches. Salutations and from Canada.
Thanks for the solution, Peter. Well explained. Could you inform us on the OHMS OF THE RESISTOR?. I think we should all have a resistor like this in the trunk, together with the spare lamps, just in case that electric motor sudenly fails.
hello Peter and other connoisseurs. I want to remove the throttle servo motor and put the 4.7k resistor. but my doubts are: when we change this part it is mandatory to completely remove the butterflies that are in the air intake manifolds. right? As far as I know when we remove those butterfly valves the engine is making a pit in acceleration when in effort. So is it mandatory to reprogram the engine injection maps? what do i have to consider to do the full job?
Top man peter done this today after car been in limp mode for a few weeks and Mercedes wanting almost £500 to replace.. cost me 10p for the resistor and 30mins of my time to fix the problem and now it working like a dream... Thanks
I have Mercedes w211 e270 cdi but some time don't have much speed maximum speed is 130km but sometime work good it's go to the maximum I go to 215km they tell me about turbo or something like plc can u give me any idea
Thanks Peter! I just bought a CLK cabrio with the same engine. Will be ready if the flaps go. Is there any benefit to disable them if they're working fine? Thanks for the videos!
Don't think so. It is only workaround if swirl motor fails because of oil leaking from above turbo intake (common problem in this engine) and changing of swirl motor would be difficult and laborious
Thank you so much Peter you saved me so much money and headache your brilliant. Also for anyone else I order 4.7k ohm 1/2 watt resistors of Amazon and worked perfectly on my 2008 ML 320 CDI. Thanks again Peter!!
Hello Peter, Thanks for your help in advance,i have gone through all your comments. i am facing similar issue in my w211 E280 Cdi. my obd scanner is showing me error as 1) "P0244 OBD-II Trouble Code: Turbocharger Wastegate Solenoid A Circuit Range/Performance", 2) 2510-1 Check Component Y77/1 (Boost pressure regulator). positioner signals fault. can i try your magic on my car for this issue. please help me. thanks. god bless.
Hey, Would flushing out the connector and sealing with a bit of electrical tape or self amalgamating tape not have the same effect if the motor is working ? Cheers
Vauxfan2k its possible and worth trying .but it could have shorted out the motor already .but if you strip it down enough to get access to the connecter for the sake of spending a couple of quid on a resister you might aswell stick it in .
Yeah I though the same Vauxfan2k but to do so would be a real prick of a job. Much easier to do Peter's fix especially after doing research on what the Swirl Flap Motor actually does, which is nothing (as it stays open) at normal highway driving speed and has a debatable impact on fuel consumption and engine operation at low speeds. Go with Peter's fix.
TOP UPLOAD PETER, i aren't even bothered how you came across this by-pass, but for 19 pence its a lot cheaper than any of the alternatives, even if you have the nouse to change the shut off motor yourself. FOR OTHER MERC DRIVERS -that have the 3 pin plug, install resistor across terminals 2 & 3 ( i have a 2005 w211 E280) Follow Peters instructions and bridge as above, replace removed bits, fire up & BOOM, the flying machine is back, and after a couple of starts engine management light goes out HAPPY DAYS PLEASE NOTE- none of the additional info i have provided will not be approved by Mercedes, SO NO COME BACK TO MYSELF, but it does work!!!
i did this it worked straight away.. but now have engine managment light on.. so what i wont look at it,does loose a little mid range .but really worth doing..(cls 320 diesel, 2006)
1952fletch excellant .you should find it will turn itself off like mine did after about 15/20 cycles of turning the ignition key on and off .but you shouldnt notice any dip in performance
Hi Peter my merc 280 is doing this and mercedes have said it's my actuator on my turbo and charged me £150. I'm gonna try your method and hope it works. Car has full power when cold but then engine light comes on and has no power and won't go over 2000rpm
Hi Peter. I have w211 280CDi - facing issues like sometimes limp mode or sometimes the motor jerks after putting the accelerator down. My turbo + actuator was refurbished the mechanical parst and electronics but I think the electronic on actutator is in the end again. - or this hack on your video does not have nothing to do with the actuator? Today I tryied your hack with the 4,7KOhm resistor it worked, no limp mode apperared, kickdown worket bud I felt that the motor is lazy. It has no power like it have normally. So I removed the resistor and made a test drive and the car starting to fly. I read the comments and everyone say that his car is flying with the resistor but mine was working but with 50% of power. What could be the issue? Thanks in advance for your reply.
Martin, It is different engine a little, but may be your swirl valve was in bad position, when you use resistor (may be because lot of mess inside intake manifold or ...?). Try again if it helps...
Hi @peter amberley I have recently had a problem with my e320 which looks like swirl flap motor trouble. I intend to send this to my mechanic to see if its the same issue. What resistor are you using? i.e ohms. When he described issue to me it sounded expensive to sod around with the motor itself. All the best.
Hello people, i have a Jeep Grand Cherokee 2007 with Mercedes 3.0 CRD and the same problem. I try to do it with 4.7K Ohm resistance (2 watts). And no work... maybe is not the right resistance, somebody test with 1/4 watt resistance also in others videos. Can you help me please to find the right resistance or another solution for this commun problem in our engines. Thank you.
@@peteramberley9952 But still, after few runs, when I kick-down throttle, I'm getting EPC error. Might it be intake manifold flap controling motor fault?
Just 4k Ohm resistor prized €0.1, Mercedes have offered repair for €800 (in CZ). Swirl flaps do not work at all but... who cares :) How did you know that? Some reverse engineering?
Install the Proven 200 crankcase gas separator. All problems begin due to the impact of oil in the turbine and engine. Turn around, we make a mount and a complete set .
I have recently replaced oil cooler ,Egr cooler and swierl flaps actuator.Cleaned extremely dirty manifolds and swirl flaps. This resistor trick is working until your car will loose torque as manifolds gets clogged. mine was so dirty that failed MOT due to high emmisions (UK).
Used a 4.7 Ohms 2 watt and the turbo isn't working now. The car works fine but the turbo is like bypass. For me it just disconnected the turbo. It suppose to act on the m55 signal, why it switch off the turbo ? And why the car worked fine without the turbo ( except there is no turbo power ) ? Weird no ? Any idea ?
@@peteramberley9952 0:40 at this video, you say that the swirl flaps should be open. Is there any way to discover their position? How would I know if the swirl flaps are closed? If they are closed, how should I open them?
@@Skenderovski there sprung loaded so there default position is open. The linkages are hard to see but performance wise you should know if there closed. If they are so badly carboned up there are stuck open you probley need to remove the inlet manifold
In my own case a fuse that deals with this and the turbo actuator blew. So if this fix doesn't work straight away check that the actuator on the turbo is working.
Used a 4.2K and its worked a charm, used OBD reader to clear engine management light and we are back to full power. 30 min, 3 inch of duck tape and a resistor and I'm up £800 guess the garage are getting a call Monday to say it wont be coming in after all. Many thanks.
robrg6 unless you have a merces compatible obd reader yiu wont turn the light off ,but after about 30 turns of the ignition on and off if theres no other faults it will reset.
Where do I buy this resistor? Will this one work on my s008 Dodge Sprinter diesel engine?? I'm going to remove my complete swirl valve assembly. JB Weld in the shafts so they don't fall into my motor. Remove my swirl valve motor. Then hopefully with the little resistor. No more codes! I Hope!! So. Where to purchase said Resistor?
Hello good afternoon and thank you for your professional contribution. An inquiry please. What is the value of that resistor? I have the same problem and wanted to test it. Is there no problem not having the servomotor connected? Many thanks from Spain
4k ohm resistor .no problem .default is set open ,I believe they are only for emissions low readings but you will not notice any difference in performance
@@peteramberley9952 Thanks a lot for taking care of my consultation. I have a 5k resistor can be valid? . I appreciate your contribution so professional that you are not a mechanic just changing parts. I am very grateful, a cordial greeting from Malaga Spain
@@peteramberley9952 Good afternoon Mr Peter. Tomorrow I will get a resistance of 4 k. I have tried the 5 k and when testing the vehicle the turbo does not enter. The vehicle stopped working the turbo and it appears in the diagnosis short circuit in m55 and several more faults that I suppose are related. Tomorrow I will try the 4k resistance to see if it works for me and I solve that problem and I will inform you
@@peteramberley9952 Good morning Mr Peter. How is. I tell him what happened to me in case it is what happened to him. Driving with the vehicle the turbo stopped acting without any sense, it changes perfectly but the turbo does not get to enter. I saw the video of him, so try what I saw, since I don't know exactly what his problem was due to language. The fuse is correct, what appears to me is a short circuit in the m55 and the turbo actuator. If he could give me something I would be extremely grateful. I am going to locate a 4k resistor as he instructed me. Thank you very much
Helloo Peter I just want to ask you does it works when my car has p2510 code it suposed to be actuator, sometimes car goes to limp mode but when I turn off the engine and turn On again it runs with no problems after few days it makes that again?? Please I need your answer!!
Mine did exactly the same thing then would rest itself .I can't remember the codes anymore but it gave off quite a few codes ie air flow meter,dpf,o2 sensors.for the sake of £1.00 for a resistor I would definitely try it.
ENGINE MANAGEMENT LIGHT HAS NOW GONE OFF AND STILL DRIVING REALLY GOOD . I HAD A LOT OF FAULT CODES STORED (IE LAMBDA SENSER /O2 ,AIRLOW SENSERS,DPF.) ALL OF WHICH CAN BE ATRIBUTED TO THE SWIRLFLAP MOTOR FAULT, I DID CHANGE ALL SENSERS BEFOR SO CANT SAY 100 PERCENT THEY WASNT FAULTY BUT NONE SOLVED THE LIMP HOME MODE .
I did this and it worked to stop limp mode. One question, do I need to ensure my swirl flaps are set to open? If so is there a way to see/adjust the lever manually?
Easy Baby it doesnt really matter the flaps are factory set to be sprung open so if there not working they will automatically be open the resistor sends the correct reading to the ecu to think they are working.
Hi Peter, Thank you so much for your series of 3 videos on this Swirl Flap Motor issue. I'm in Australia and have a 209 Jeep Grand Cherokee with this same Mercedes motor in it. I was told by the local dealer about this problem when I explained to him what had happened - he explained the issue rather quickly stating it was a known issue with the Jeeps and he gave me enough info so that when I came across your videos I knew I had the right issue. The local dealer then quoted me 2x mechanics at 6 hours each PLUS parts to replace the Swirl Flap Motor; knowing the main issue was the oil dripping into the connection as you explained and which he explained to me before quoting the work. His quote came to around $1200 AUD for labour plus parts, which are triple the O/S price here in Australia. So I'm guessing not much change out of $2500 AUD. Not being a motor mechanic but being an electrician by trade (who hates working on cars) I decided to have a go at your fix ... I only had 2500 reasons to give it a shot. ;) So I watched your second and last video several times and followed your advice and read all the comments here and had a crack at it. There was only one thing I did differently and that was because I could only find an old 3.3kOhm small sized (5mm long) resistor in amongst my salvaged electronic parts and used that instead of the larger (near 10mm long) 4.7kOhm resistor I found. I figured that at the very worst case I would replace it with the physically larger 4.7kOhm resistor if it didn't work. But as it is only to trick the ECU into thinking the Swirl Flap Motor is there and healthy I believed it would work. I don't know what the actual resistance of the Swirl Flap Motor is but 1.4kOhm less that the recommended resistor is not a great deal of difference. I just hope it doesn't do anything to the ECU. Cross my fingers here but it shouldn't. I'm very pleased to inform you it worked a treat the VERY FIRST TIME I started the Jeep. Within a few seconds of starting, the Swirl Motor fault light had disappeared. So I took it for a 10km test drive and it was back to it's normal self. FANTASTIC! BLOODY AWESOME! A high five to the missus and we're both very grateful you took the time to post your videos. When You're in Australia Peter let me know and we'll shout you out for a night in Echuca, VIC - the Paddle-steamer Capital of the world; much older than the Mississippi. Thanks heaps buddy. Brian Lord hi brian a very big thanks to you and your story :) and brother accross the other side of the world . Its for people like you i enjoy shareing my little knowledge and experience with .happy new year cobber :)
Hi Peter I have a Merc c320 cdi 05 plate same engine , Symptoms are start car in morning will start ok run fine then with in a mile goes into limp mode . Turn engine of the restart all is fine again , goes fine then of of sudden starts jerking then limp mode , restart again same thing ,,,,,,, no management light. Fare bit of smoke in limp mode.If I do the swirl flap job what resistor size 4K but what wattage ? Do you think it's egr problem ?on the diagnostic machine it did say something about egr but 400£ for egr is a bit to much , I have pulled it of cleaned it and looks ok can much go wrong with them .? Would appreciate your help if you can as i can't afford to throw money at it. Kind regards paul
My car exactly the same thing .it all started when i booted it and it blew the intercooler pipe off .i drove it for about 10 miles to get home and it was dying .put the hose back on and all sorts of problems started after that .only the glowplug light started flashing first of all.you can test the egr valve by a vacume test or pour a fluid in there see if it seals atf etc. But you can take the induction side of the turbo which only takes about 15/20 mins and see if theres much oil dripping out from around the intake pipe and also you will see the wireing connector directly under the pipe (oil drip)which is why they short out .you dont need a high wattage resitor .but have a look and see if the conector has oil around it and for the sake of 40 pennies it could be a cheap fix
Hi thanks for getting back to me . I have pulled the pipe of the turbo and there is oil all over that black part just where the plug , plugs in so may be some oil has got in there and shorted it out ..... But I don't get it ... Today I went out got on duely , gave it some ,,,,,, jerk jerk jerk lots then lots of smoke and limp mode 3000 rpm . Turn of engine dark to normal then again same thing wired . Il order a couple of 4 k resistors will 2 watt be ok Regards paul
billy bob the wattage is not really an issue thickness of the wire really .its the ohms (resistance) that counts that matches the swirlflap motor signal
Hello Peter Car has now got engine light all time now , but for the life of me I can't see were to get a 4K resistor from , Maplins 3.9 -4.7 k only rang up lots of sits and electric company's and no one seems to have them ,,,, do you have any idea on where to get one Regards paul
hi,i have same problem with me mercedes ml280 w164. what resistor do use? is a temporary fix or real good fix so no more wory, So more consumption ? less power?,or better to change it the swirl flap motor.?thanks ,good video,!!!chers
hi lucian the swirl flaps are sprung fully open on default . i didnt notice any difference in fuel economy or performance . bassically its fooling the computer to think it opperating as normal
i cant remember the resister value off hand but if you send me your details I have some spare I can send you one . I never noticed any difference in performance ,consumption or smoke , obviously it would be better to replace the motor but ! you could also have a problem with the inlet manifold . I don't really see the logic behind the reason too put the car in limp home mode in the first place other then maybe more money for repair bills for Mercedes benz ( I don't know the reason for the swirlflaps unless its to get the emissions down for government figures, but I cannot forsee any harmfull reason as to why you should not trick the ecu with the resistor to tell it that the motor/swirlflaps are in the returned position .
I'd tried it on my 2007 ML320 CDI it ran normal on the first 8Km then return to limp home mode after that. anyone has any idea what could be the problem. thank you.
I used a 4,7 k, but had to changeit to 4.02 k after that it was great- but had only driven about 1-2 miles. but it feels a lot quiker. react faster. gone be intressting to so if it make the engine better or it is just the feeleing. thanks anyway.
@@luboslavh1586 I had a check engine ligth. not shore if it was for the conection I forgot to put on agaian, but It would not go off. so I had the 4 kohm. and it workt. but it could work with 4.7 too,,just try.
Got the p2513 on e220 cdi w211 inlet port shutoff m55 position x/y. Is it thesame thing as this. I only get limp mode when kick down on high speeds. Then have to turn off then turn on for it to get out of limp mode vice versa.
md mm for the sake of 40p for a resister you might aswell try it .but on the v6 s the turbo inlet pipe drips oil in an electrical connector where as your turbo is lower down
hey i have a cls 320cdi from 2007 i have a m55 issue i think its the same problem the car has no power after 3000 rpm i will try this but i can not do more problems with this fix????how long can you drive whit this fix?thx
no it will not cause any problems the car runs fine without the swirl flap operating .they are default set to be open .there is no time period ,basically you are fooling the computer to think the swirlflap motor is operating correctly . I guess its the equivalent to an egr valve bypass .
@@rbrood267 that's the right resister. It shouldn't drop a code. I would check it's in the right holes and a good connection, it's never dropped a code befor. Or you have a faulty resistor
