Mercenary Samurai & the Rise of the Kamakura Shogunate

Traditionally one of the major breaks in Japanese history has been the creation of the Kamakura Shogunate, or Bakufu, which signified the dawn of the samurai. Since the Second World War, Japanese historiography has taken a different course, and a re-examination of the sources, notably by John Hall, has shifted the understanding: rather than marking any sort of decisive break in Japanese history, the Kamakura Shogunate was an extension of actions being undertaken by the Imperial Court in an attempt to reform the military and adjust to the increasing numbers of semi-privatized warriors--the famous Japanese samurai. This video, drawing heavily on the work of Karl Friday, explores that process.

Kamakura is a really cool city if you ever get the chance to visit it. A huge number of temples and shrines tucked into narrow coastal valleys which are connected by modern tunnels and Kamakura-era strategic roads cut up and over the hills for logistics a thousand years ago.

These medieval woodblocks are outstanding. It's incredible that we don't hear about them much more

I was reading/watching videos on portuguese conquest on the india and spice islands they would employ japanese samurai. 14th-15th century. it reminded me of that time Aztec warriors fought ottomans janissaries in the philippines in the 15th century.

suggested video Roman Knights did they influence the german tribe that most histories accept founded the knights(knighthood) concept or was it the other way around. plus that tribe lived on the border of the romans they were definitely influenced by the romans and they should have known about the roman knights.

Very interesting video. i've read a few books on the development of the samurai class in the Heian and early Kamakura period, including Hired Swords, but you were able to clearly articulate some of the vague ideas I had. I feel like the idea that the court nobles and provincial aristocracy measured power differently, through tax and labour, explains why the court and the bakufu could coexist like they did. I also like the description of the Shogunate as a warriors' workers union.

Why was Feudal Japan so in-love and wary of china at the same?

Probably for the same reason: they were strong and rich, which made them something to be both feared and emulated.

They were the most powerful entity in the ancient time of Asia (mostly south and south east Asia.) They were like Western countries in our time. Everyone in Asia was influenced by them. Despite the fact that ancient Chinese gave their neighbors their contempt as barbarians and tried to conquest all around them (like what they did with Vietnam, Korean, Mongol, Khitan and Tangut). So, the Japanese has that kind of love-hate relationship with China was normal at the time.

So essentially it holds true in Japan as well that the history of civilisation is the history of the struggle between classes
