The 'Wilhelmus' has been officially the 'Dutch' anthem since 1932. The text was written around 1570 at the beginning of the Eighty Years' War to an existing melody. The current variant of that melody dates from the early 17th century. The Wilhelmus is considered one of the oldest national anthems in the world, although the lyrics of the Japanese national anthem are older.[1] The lyrics of the song have been put in Willem van Oranje's mouth, as if he had spoken it himself. The text reflects William of Orange's conflict about the revolt in the Netherlands: on the one hand, as a representative of the state authority, he tries to be loyal to the Spanish king, on the other hand, he follows his conscience, which dictates him primarily to serve God and the Dutch people. The song was popular as a military march and was a support in the fight of the Netherlands against the Spanish ruler. The song remained popular throughout the Eighty Years' War,[2] but it fell into obscurity[source?] until it was rediscovered in the 19th century. It was initially mainly popular in orange-minded and denominational circles, but during the Second World War it became a more or less undisputed national symbol.

Actually the Dutch Republic and the American Republic stood for mostly the same things. I'm actually kind of proud that the Dutch national anthem is usually sung better by drunk people before an important football match than solemnly or belligerently. What I like about is that it's written by a friend of the protagonist from his perspective, and that he, as in Willem van Oranje, feels the need to explain himself. Despite leading the revolt against the King of Spain, he did always honour him. He wasn't a traitor, he didn't try to take the crown. Besides leading the military part of the revolt he always kept putting forth legal arguments against the king, why he or his governing duke was out of line, in breach of ancient rights, privileges and treaties. That's also why the Dutch DOI, Het Plakkaat van Verlatinghe, doesn't state that the Netherlands leaves the Spanish Empire, it states that the Spanish king had left the legitimate throne of the Netherlands by being a tyrant and not respecting the ancient and natural (inalienable) rights of the people. Of course it was decided by battles, sieges, ship sinkings and polical plotting, but the legal case was always argued like it would have mattered to the King of Spain. It didn't because he was bloodthirsty zealot who believed his order from god to kill all protestants made the rest irrelevant, but still the rebels kept making the effort.

@@zulawoo I don't agree about the sarcasm. The rebels needed allies or at least be tolerated by Europe's nobility. They could not nor did they want to challenge the whole hierarchical structure of nobility, wich was controlled by honour. Challenging a king and claiming the people's souvereignty to remove a tyrant was already extremely daring and revolutionary. Also the Dutch were sneaky in supporting the US. The Dutch Republic was quite dependent on workable relations with the then much more powerful British. So they just kept trading with and selling weapons to the US without telling the British.

When you take first letter of each verse, you get "W I L L E M V A N N A S S O V". Today is the 'v' a 'u'. You get the name of one of the most important persons in our history Willem van Nassau/van Oranja-Nassau/van Oranje. The story is too long to write the whole story. And it's complicated. This was not the most beautiful version of the Wilhelmus I have ever heard. I miss the trumpets, trombones, etc. That makes the Wilhelmus more bombastic. As a member of a Dutch choir I had the honor of singing the Wilhelmus in a large church at least once with my choir and the audience. Together, perhaps more than a thousand people. There were trumpets. That was so beautiful!

"van Duitschen bloed" actually means "of German blood". William of Orange was originally from the House of Nassau from Dillenburg in what is now Germany (which wasn't a country before 1871). Of course WW2 changed things.
@AfterDune

A reply to an old comment, but had to do it :-). It doesn't mean "of German blood", it means "of Dutch blood", named after the language "Diets" (a predecessor of the present day Dutch language), which was what the people in the area of the current Netherlands spoke back then. That's also where the word "Dutch" comes from. During and mostly after WW2, people often sang "Dietsen bloed" instead of "Duitschen bloed", because nowadays that means "German". But originally, Diets, so: Dutch.

The 'I' in the song is William of Orange himself, so he is the one singing/speaking the text. And he did always honor the king of Spain (Philips II who was king of The Netherlands at that time) - until he no longer could because of Philips' cruel reign in The Netherlands. And indeed William was of German blood. The song was written in admiration of William of Orange, somewhere between 1568 and 1572. It is our national anthem since 1932 but through the ages the Dutch continued singing it, especially christians and adherents of the House of Orange.

It is a nice country and part of my ancestors came from there, but on the other hand, nation states are such an artificial construct and where you are born is a lottery anyway. But, it is always nice to visit the Netherlands, as I did just yesterday. I had to go to Roermond for some shopping. It just came to mind (actually Google reminded me) that today is the German national holiday, so you should have played the German national anthem. Don't worry, I couldn't care less about those things. I even forgot, since it is on a Sunday this year, so I don't have to work anyway, otherwise I would have had an extra day off and I might had remembered what day it is.

The Wilhelmus is the oldest national anthem in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records. Yet that is not entirely true: it is the oldest song to be chosen as the national anthem. The song originated around 1570. Officially it only became the national anthem of the Netherlands in 1932. Folk songs, such as "God save the Queen" from England and the "Marseillaise" from France emerged later in 1745 and 1792. The Wilhelmus is a propaganda song and is about William of Orange, the leader of the revolt against Spain during the Eighty Years' War. Because of the I-form it seems as if they are the words of William of Orange himself. After defeating the Spaniards, the Netherlands became independent.

Zeer christlijk was gedreven mijn prinselijk gemoed, standvastig is gebleven mijn hart in tegenspoed.

There is so much to tell about the Dutch Anthem that it is very confusing at his start. We sing about that we are from german blood "not Dutch" which makes this anthem allready very strange and weird, also how we honor the king of Spain, like where is our pride, But maybe it comes clear when we know the whole anthem that no dutchie does at all, me neither. We sing the first couplet that starts with the letter "W" where the song has at least 8 couplets more for every letter that the name "Wilhelmus" has. The language is very, very old, for most of us dutch almost unreadable, that makes it hard to understand aswell.

It's not German blood, it's actually Dutch blood, which (in Dutch) is called "Diets". The English word "Dutch" comes from that as well. Regarding the Spanish king, The Netherlands didn't exist yet, not even the Republic of the Seven Provinces. We were ruled by the Spanish king, Charles V, which William of Orange had good connections with. Charles wasn't a tyrant (well, except for the persecution of protestants...). And this Charles was the one William had always honoured. His son however, Phillip II, was someone who William had a completely different relationship with. And at that same time, many Spanish mercenaries had occupied the lowlands, mainly due to the rise of Protestants, which Phillip hated. And with the occupation came a lot of bloodshed (by the Spanish). It was then that William was to start uniting the lowlands and stand up against the occupying Spanish forces. So, William had always honoured the Spanish king, but fought against the occupation and all the terrible things that came with it. Apologies for the wall of text 😂. I hope it makes a little more sense.

As a musician I hate the way how this is sung. I get that this is done because of the lyrics, but the more common instrumental (concert band) version sounds so much more powerful. Just like with the orchestral version of Unchained Melody, it's just this feeling of coming together as one that gives the anthem it's great full sound: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--IRSUQnKkgw.html

Important to understand the song was that by decree of the Pope it was decided that the king was placed on the throne by God. So a rebellion to the king (of Spain) was a rebellion against God. The penalty for heresy was death (mostly burning at the stake). To "save the soul" of the person, he was tortured first to confess and repend. So, the song is partly to reassure the soldiers and patriots they would still get their place in heaven when supporting the revolt against the Spanish

The cc is wrong. "Dat ik doch vroom mag blijven" (6th verse) vroom does not ever translate as brave, vroom means devout. And yes that is a religious term, but do not forget it was written just after being freed from Spain and Catholicism. Being a devout christian was meant to be in here, as opposing the power of Rome and Spain. So it translates as "Make sure that I remain devout" grant is a term that should not have been used, because the question is about certainty of being devout. (srry polyglot translator here, hates the bad subtitling) Duitsen bloed = German blood here. It refers to the German root of the Dutch Royal family. No ffing idea where the translator came up with that one, but it is wrong again. The orginal Dutch version never read "dood" but "doet" old Dutch for the same thing. Same with "hart" which reads "hert". I dunno, but bad Dutch text and worse translation. Besides we only sing the 1st and 6th verse once, not ever repeat it. So I am sorry, but I have to dislike this video, regrettably.

Before “vroom” meant “devout”, it used to mean “brave, stout, healthy, firm”. Towards the end of the 16th century, its meaning had been solidified in just one meaning: devout. But look at earlier and even contemporary prose and songs, like the other famous protest song from the era “Merck toch hoe sterck”, and you’ll see that “vroom” means “brave”, and not (yet) devout.

I think the only strong part of our anthem is the melody. The lyrics didn’t really survive the centuries that passed since their creation all that well. The melody existed well before the lyrics were written, by the way. The original was a song that was created/sang during the siege of Chartres by the Huguenots in 1568. That melody was much more up-tempo and simpler. The slower tempo and the embellishments were added in the 17th century (source: Wikipedia).

Not right... The way they sang our Anthem has a somewhat blasphemic, satiristic twist in it and so it should be sung with devotion, dignity and respect because it's from Christian origin. It actually describes how the Protestant Christians have suffered and survided the Spanish/Roman Catholic oppression during the 1500 - 1600's. That's why we call it the 80 year war. Back then we fought for our freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and so on... I hope this helps you to understand our Anthem better.

That's not even the complete anthem yet. Our Wilhelmus has got a total of 15... yes, FIFTEEN verses. 😅 Enjoy the official translation below... it's quite a read! Official translation: William of Nassau, scion Of a Dutch and ancient line, I dedicate undying Faith to this land of mine. A prince I am, undaunted, Of Orange, ever free, To the king of Spain I've granted A lifelong loyalty. I 've ever tried to live in The fear of God's command And therefore I've been driven, From people, home, and land, But God, I trust, will rate me His willing instrument And one day reinstate me Into my government. Let no despair betray you, My subjects true and good. The Lord will surely stay you Though now you are pursued. He who would live devoutly Must pray God day and night To throw His power about me As champion of your right. Life and my all for others I sacrificed, for you! And my illustrious brothers Proved their devotion too. Count Adolf, more's the pity, Fell in the Frisian fray, And in the eternal city Awaits the judgement day. I, nobly born, descended From an imperial stock. An empire's prince, defended (Braving the battle's shock Heroically and fearless As pious Christian ought) With my life's blood the peerless Gospel of God our Lord. A shield and my reliance, O God, Thou ever wert. I'll trust unto Thy guidance. O leave me not ungirt. That I may stay a pious Servant of Thine for aye And drive the plagues that try us And tyranny away. My God, I pray thee, save me From all who do pursue And threaten to enslave me, Thy trusted servant true. O Father, do not sanction Their wicked, foul design, Don't let them wash their hands in This guiltless blood of mine. O David, thou soughtest shelter From King Saul's tyranny. Even so I fled this welter And many a lord with me. But God the Lord did save me From exile and its hell And, in His mercy, gave him A realm in Israel. Fear not 't will rain sans ceasing The clouds are bound to part. I bide that sight so pleasing Unto my princely heart, Which is that I with honor Encounter death in war, And meet in heaven my Donor, His faithful warrior. Nothing so moves my pity As seeing through these lands, Field, village, town and city Pillaged by roving hands. O that the Spaniards rape thee, My Netherlands so sweet, The thought of that does grip me Causing my heart to bleed. A stride on steed of mettle I've waited with my host The tyrant's call to battle, Who durst not do his boast. For, near Maastricht ensconced, He feared the force I wield. My horsemen saw one bounce it Bravely across the field. Surely, if God had willed it, When that fierce tempest blew, My power would have stilled it, Or turned its blast from you But He who dwells in heaven, Whence all our blessings flow, For which aye praise be given, Did not desire it so. Steadfast my heart remaineth In my adversity My princely courage straineth All nerves to live and be. I've prayed the Lord my Master With fervid heart and tense To save me from disaster And prove my innocence. Alas! my flock. To sever Is hard on us. Farewell. Your Shepherd wakes, wherever Dispersed you may dwell, Pray God that He may ease you. His Gospel be your cure. Walk in the steps of Jesu This life will not endure. Unto the Lord His power I do confession make That ne'er at any hour Ill of the King I spake. But unto God, the greatest Of Majesties I owe Obedience first and latest, For Justice wills it so.

The anthem was made around 1580's on an already excisting melody. The text are the words of William of Nassau, Prince of Orange. So we sing what he is thinking and feeling. In a way a strange thing for a national anthem. Since 1932 its our national anthem, before that we had another one. Most times we only sing the first verse and on special occasions or in the church the 6th verse (of 15). I think there are many better versions than this one. The one from Andre Rieu ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OvgT_-pgvhA.html gives a better feeling the way we most times hear/sing it.

Sorry but you're mistaken. "van Duitschen bloed" in the time the poem was written meant "Of the people" and since this was well before the very notion of a nationality in the modern sense, the translation is actually correct with regards to the intended meaning. In fact, just a few decades before the Dutch revolt, the area that made up the Netherlands were mostly part of the Holy Roman Empire (of the German Nation). So, The distinction between "Dutch" (Dietsch as some would call it) and German is about the same as the difference between i.e. Bavarians and Saxons, or Tyrolleans and Hanoverians, all "Deutsche" with just minor regional differences, all speaking dialects of a language that still had a very high degree of mutual intelligibility and pretty much all under the same or very similar imperial laws. The present understanding of any distinction between a Dutchman is a German or an Austrian or the Swiss is pretty much a modern (say from the age of enlightenment onwards) concept which would have been alien to the people then. In fact, most of the "nationalist" sentiments we understand today were invented (and such ideas spread in books and print) in the 19th century when the modern nation state developed as a concept.

The Devina Michelle version at the Dutch F1 Grand Prix touched me more than the original anthem. Many Dutch people don't relate to this outdated, weird spelled, lyrics anymore. Apart from the chorus, they don't know the lyrics of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and so on verses of the anthem. It's fine to be enthousiastic about hearing this version of the anthem, although I have to make a correction that many Dutch people don't even get past verse 1 (including myself) on the anthem, because it's so outdated. Context: Prince Filips II of Spain delared Willem van Oranje (Netherlands) "vogelvrij", meaning 'he gave permission for Willem van Oranje to be killed by anyone'. So far 'the King of 'Hispanje' (King of Spain) I have always honored'. Beautiful anthem
