Michael Denner and Hank Shermann playing riffs from all songs to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Mercyful Fate's MELISSA Album. Originally released on October 30th 1983. 100% Genuine MF Live Sound! Full Version Video!
In the annals of rock history, the riffs on the album Melissa are underrated to the point of of idiocy. I would say the album is equal to (or even surpasses) other instantly recognizable classics by Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and others of their ilk. Thanks for your contribution to rock and metal guys, you have brought many years of enjoyment to many people!
they were Pioneers in there sound, unique for sure!!! Melissa and don't break the oath are right thete in my book!!!! Of course the Greats that were mentioned were way earlier so ya there influence for sure. MY greats in my book! King diamond was cool, but lacked the riffs for sure!!
I put Denner and Shermann on the same level as KK Downing/Glen Tipton and Dave Murray/Adrien Smith. Iconic riffs and soloing from a guitar duo who complete two sides of the same coin.
I remember reading guitar world magazine back in 05 and they had 100 greatest guitarists of all time I think between 50 and 60 and they compared them to Glenn and KK sux that denner is not in the new mercyful fate ever since then there the underground version of Judas priest too me
Look at the smiles on their faces while playing the songs, it's beautiful. I love the Melissa album, it changed my life in ways i could have never imagined. The world needs more Mercyful Fate.
Me too! I was never the same after discovering this band. Had a great influence on me when I was in high school. It kind of made you tough in a certain way. The music got me through a lot of tough times as well. Good times! A++
Yeah all those musicians are awesome! Even the drummer for Diamond Snowy Shaw. He's doing his own stuff which is good as well. Love real classic metal. A++
@@kruse8888 Maybe one of the best riff writers? I have crowned Rolf Kasparek from Running Wild as the best riff writer. Tony Iommi of course the ones also
Agree, I was actually not familiar to most of Mercyful Fates catalogue of music or King Diamond honestly but after falling in love with Death's album Individual Thought Patterns where I first heard Andy Laroque's amazing solos dudes a machine!!
These guys had the tightest sound of a guitar duo, one of the best I have ever heard. Severely underrated guitarists that deserve praise!! When you go back and listen again, it's simply amazing how technical they were with the rhythms and their leads, all layered so beautifully to perfection.
Hank Shermann guitar = hell fire Michael Denner guitar = black magic together = perfect union I believe there are some musicians who are destined to play together, so the great peaces of music could be created. By my opinion you two are such musicians. Not many people (if any) were able to create such atmosphere in their music as you did.
+Patty Cummins Agreed. I hate electronic music. I remember when Mercyful Fate got back together (in 1993?) and my girlfriend at the time wanted to see Thrill Kill Kult and I wanted to see Mercyful Fate (It was Halloween night and that's like my Christmas, I'm a left-hand path guy), so we had a huge argument where she called me everything but a white man, and went to separate concerts. Even today, when I think of it, I still think "fuck that Russian bitch". She was hot tho.
Michael and Hank still have the best synergy of all guitar duos. Even after all those years it is still there. They complement each other perfectly. Their combined sound is so full that words simply can't describe it. Even in this impromptu take they sound so perfect.
Ben, No matter what Amps we use, it always turns out about the same! Sound is in the fingers. We normally uses Marshall with EL34, but to loud in an apartment :-)
Listening to these two playing and talking like this is a real treat. They have some great history together, in Mercyful Fate, Danger Zone and Brats. One of the best guitar duos for sure!
I agree, for me, there's Glenn Tipton/K.K. Downing (Judas Priest), Denner/Shermann (Mercyful Fate indeed)... and the rest (Murray/Smith from Iron Maiden's 80's era, Hansen/Weikath from early Helloween and a couple of others) :)
I imagine that Mercyful Fate won't be touring this summer due to the coronavirus situation. You fellas should use the spare time to make friends with Michael Denner. It wouldn't be a Mercyful Fate reunion without him!
I am very grateful to Shermann and Denner for helping me with his guitar riffs. Mercyful Fate is my main musical influences. And I hope that in the near future the band again reunite and record a new album. Cheers from Brazil!!!
I bought "melissa" The year it was released. I was 14 I think? Now I am 44 and I still hear those songs with the same enthusiasm. Definitely one of the best albums in the history of music. Thank you guys!
I had collected him from day one. Merciful Fate 👑 Diamond. Had a guy ink my field jacket with.. The bun on the cross kings first 4 track, nuns have no fun, inked on my skin
Yes we did a version of Zeps Immigrant Song, actually sounded pretty good, but was left out, good decision I think! We used 2 inch tapes at the time, and recorded over the Immigrant Song to save tape! Crazy but no studio version avail. There might be a reheasal room version, but we keep it Vaultet :-) / Hank
Why? I know it it your music but some things need to be released before you guys die god forgive me for saying this. I have seen and heard you play Bach in concert so??? Any way you too rule metal guitar, take care and stay heavy. \m/
Still metal AF after all these years. I think they are the best 1-2 punch in metal history. Thanks for everything Boys. I was always affraid of listening to Melissa bc i thought my stereo might rust, thats how f*cking metal that album is.
You guys are THE MOST UNIQUE BAND OF ALL TIME. There's no band that could ever be as original as Mercyful Fate. This is a once in a lifetime sound that could never and WILL NEVER be duplicated. The first MF song I ever heard was Doomed and when that chorus came up, "no way..." that was it for me. I became an advocate and full time promoter making sure every ear heard by making at least 1000 cassette tapes with Doomed and Evil and passed them out at concerts and party's. I know people were giving them to their friends because a few months after I started giving the samples away I was at a house party and some young kid pulls out blue labeled maxell tape (mine) and says "you guys gotta hear this". The look on peoples faces that never heard MF was priceless. GREAT BAND!!
Awesome watching and listening to you Hank and Michael!! Appreciate you guys and your time. Great hearing you guys play those tunes that seem as magical now as they were back in the 80s, some damn good times! It's almost impossible to find raw metal with such tempo and time changes weaved so brilliantly. Melissa and Don't Break the Oath are impossible to beat, to do two masterpieces back to back testifies of the treasure Mercyful Fate had laid up in store.
Hank and Michael have always been a great guitar duo and rather under appreciated, in my opinion. Melissa has been a personal favorite of mine for many years. Thanks for the music and the video, guys.
Wow, this is so great!! Thanks for putting this up, Hank! I can "hear" King, Timi, and Kim along with the guitars! Getting tears in my eyes! (lol) \m/ Be great to hear the Oath as well!
Two of the GREATEST guitarists & songwriters ever. I admire their playing so much, HUGE influence on my guitar playing🤘 Thank you for such amazing Haunting, Timeless music!!!
Melissa was always my favorite fate album. When they started Coven I was filled with joy and laughed uncontrollably like I was 16 again. Thank you guys SO much for the history and for doing this! p.s Kim Ruzz was just perfect. 30 years ago we didn't use our real names on computer and 2 of my "handles" were Hank Sherman and Michael Denner. I STILL get mail addressed to Hank Sherman lol.
I only got to see Fate live once. One of my favorite bands of all time. I saw Exciter and Fate open for Motorhead. A huge influence on my own playing with Nokturnel. Eternally grateful for the music of Mercyful Fate, Loved this video!
I've learned all riffs of Don't Break The Oath, mow we're going to Melissa. Thank you guys, you're an inspiration for many of us. Mercyful Fate for ever
Wow, you guys are giant influenses on how I play. Mellissa is one of the first chord progressions I learned as a beginner back in the 80s. I just cant express how much respect I have for you both as musicians.
Yes my friends. Here we have it now. Riff-Mania in its best form. Absolutely breathtaking. I bought the album 1983 and I'm glad to have all official releases of the 80s. Into the Coven is the bringer of this session. Fabulous.
King and Mercy full have been around for a long time. I'm 42 and just recently decides to give them a listen. Recently like 4 years ago 😁. Musically I was hooked. These dudes could jam. Drums are great. Bass is cool. But these two guys work together and just straight up OLD SCHOOL JAM. Hell yea!
Man I still remember listening to this album for the first time and just sat there mezmerised through the whole thing. 30 years later it still gives me chills when I hear it. You guys are responsible for so many memories of mine, thank you for making such GREAT music.
These guys come from the deepest darkest dungeon in a castle that know one knows it's location. This dungeon has a secret door that opens up to the galaxies. Where wizards and warlocks bless them. Where the God's roam. They grace us with their presence once in a while...
Thanks for being around in the early 80's when I was a young teenager. I had a band I could hear and enjoy when others had the GLAM rock. Back in school it was nice to draw your logo on my text book covers (brown paper back) the teachers made us use. AND finally it was MF that made me want to play metal! Thanks to you and all that is Mercyful Fate!
Pure greatness, Mercyful Fate need reunion and we fans need you on the scene again. Must say that Melissa and Dont break the oath are in my top of greatest records everrrr!!!
Thank you guys for doing this. And a huge thanks for all the great music through the years. Mercyful Fate is timeless and I will listen to it till my dying day.
My favourite album of all time! Loved the dualing solos these guys produced through the early 80s. When Michael starts soloing 'that' Mercyful Fate sound pops right out! Awesome job guys.
Thank you fellows so so much. last night I get a dreaded phone call that my mom fell and broke her hip she's in New Jersey I'm in California and I can't go to New Jersey without quarantine for 14 days so I'm kind of f*****. however this really made my day and picked up my spirits thank you thank you thank you fellows so much You have no idea how much I needed this. 🤓😷
I have the mercyful fate the beginning album signed by all but Michael Denner who refused to sign it in Columbus Ohio stating that I would sell it and make a profit. Guess what 20 years later I still have it. It is a treasure to me that I will carry to the grave. Love Mercyful Fate thanks you for all the years of influence to me
The first time I heard this album 25 years ago. Since then, it's my favorite at all. Thank you guys!!! Bagging for new album of MF! Greetings from Pooland
Holy fucking shit!! So good to hear those riffs played live again, even if only for a few moments...monumental album, took the Sabbath and Priest torch and burned it newer and brighter..so EPIC...so many sick stories of my life with this album as the soundtrack... love to you good brothers Hank and Michael!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guys, you're GUITAR HEROES of several generations of metalheads worldwide ( I and Lars included...), and yet you're simple and humble as holy men. Fantastic. Thanks for the inspiration, through the well of Time.
This video is just so awesome. .I remember seeing mercyful fate at Mississippi nights in St . Louis Missouri..my first true metal concert/ I guess 92 or 93..and the first thing I remember was seeing was your amps and the first power cords coming out of em..bone crushing sounds. I still remember the show like it was yesterday. I still wish I can relive that night..
Big praises from one of your biggest fans!!! \m/ I spent years listening to these amazing riffs. Mercyful Fate truly were, as James Hetfield once said, The Riff Masters! :) Many greetings for Republic of Srpska! P.S. Really miss Sherman/Denner duo... Vlad
