Meria, Scholar of Antiquity cEDH Gruul deck tech the new Urza

Did you think of adding the artifact lands? With the commander out, the red artifact land becomes a dual land. You can tap them to help activate the commander's ability too.

Hi Mons, no shade intended, but just so you (and everyone else) know, the red goblin Conspicuous Snoop is pronounced, Con-spick-you-ous snoop :) Conspicuous means “standing out,” or, “being obviously visible.” Many Americans too, struggle with the spelling of this word haha I have friends all the time who call it con-spish-ous, and it drives me insane 😂 I’m a writer. If you follow the naming convention of "bolt", then: 3 damage = "bolt" 2 damage = "shock" 1 damage = "jab" However, most people I know call one damage a "ping". It's the onomatopoeia for a high-pitched metallic sound. On topic, she seems fine, but Urza bringing the Karn-struct and access to blue makes the comparison pretty surface-level. I'm going to try out Daryl before I even giver Meria a second look.

Great Deck Tech, love to see a commander both similar to Urza and also with Snoop lines. You are right on Howling Mine. It's such a bait. Once you play it your commander will be the main target for removal and suddenly all your opponents draw even more cards. Not a good include.

This is pretty meta dependent, but if you have a lot of interactive blue decks at the table you could include Gutteral Response

Very excited for this commander! I decided to go a more heavy stax version of the deck that includes food chain. I'm personally on blood moon and magus bc there's also null rod/ouphe/karn/and the orbs/spheres, so just overall denying all the mana seems good.

My idea for this deck is along the Stax theme. The main combo is Karn and Mycosynth Lattice that locks down opponents from ever doing anything again. Forcing them to concede or guaranteeing you find a combo that shows a win.

Very good deck tech. I have been brewing Meria and chose to go with KCI loops instead of Snoop lines. I'm using KCI+Scrap Trawler+Myr Retriever.

did you put the goblin recruiter pile wincon in this deck cuz its really good or did you just want to show us / popularize/ test another mono red wincon?

I'm thinking that KCI-combos would work great with this commander. Synergistic with the underworld breach-package, as well as with the deck in general

The main problem I found with the recruiter combo was that being that is has a pile of 4 cards (including recruiter) it is easy to exile a key part when digging with exile ability. Hitting Kiki-Kiki and not being able to cast it sucks, an most of the time you can't because of the RRR. Also the grinding station/breach combo can't win through Rod/ouphe. The other issue with the recruiter line is you really want red mana not lots of G. It would be better if you had a mono green combo pack consisting of creatures, maybe two cards. This gives you less chance of accidental exile which in my limited testing happened way to often. At least if the Combo parts are green you have more chance you can cast them from exile with your artifacts.

Is Birgi/harenfel a consideration for the deck? On the one hand, you could be adding the red mana with birgi just for casting the rocks, possibly adding a way to filter to the Kiki jiki combo. On the flip side, if your commander gets too targeted, then you can use the harenfel side to dig through the deck for answers and fill your graveyard for breach.

Is there any reason to play LED in this deck? Or just not necessary?

Consider playing memory jar? Seems like an amazing fit in to counter Orical

What about Paradise Mantle? 0 drop mana rock equipment, which turns Meria into a mana dork as well. So kind of a 2 mana rocks for 0, in a way.

Have you considered Cloudstone Curio/Dockside lines? You have so many 1cmc creatures to bounce back with Dockside that it seems trivial. Create infinite treasures, exile and play your deck. It could replace the Snoop line and free up space for other things.

I think you could go for a more focused breach strategy if you wanted to. You don’t have many tutors that can grab breach but Meria is also a card draw engine. So you can flip through your deck pretty quick.

Is there any merit in building Meria over Jetmir? I wanted to build a Jetmir stax but I also got the good old Winter Orb and the likes that makes me want to build Meria instead.

My question for combos that have a lot of pieces like the Snoop piles; what do you do when you have one or two of your combo pieces in hand?

With Meria there's a funny lock with void mirror and possibility storm With meria you can impulse the top card and play it so you're unaffected by void mirror Your opponents, not so much

I'm not sure what to cut, but if drannith magistrate is that much of a problem, it would be good to see another answer to it in the list, maybe lightning bolt? Umezawas jitte also could answer drannith/opposing dorks and taps for a green with commander.

Mons, do you think Raggadragga is actually just a better stax gruul commander compared to Meria? A lot of artifacts in Meria feels like dead in the water once she got interacted with.

I was searching and came to the same conclusion the other day. If you're gonna take this to cEDH you NEED to play Collector Ouphe and Null Rod. People are gonna get TONS of dockside value against this deck and those two are the only things that are gonna keep your opponents from actually using all those treasures. Also, Drannith Magistrate is what Lightning Bolt is for.

how does tapping artifacts with static ability stop them from going off?

Im a believer that dorks in this deck are "bad". If your commander is out, any dork drawn is just a worse 0 or 1 cmc artifact. Yeah you get screwed if drannith comes down, but rather than dorks I'd rather just run removal. What roll do dorks play in this deck in the end. We dont really need to ramp fast for anything, and replacing some of the dorks with other artifacts helps us draw more in the end. Just my 2 cents, but when I build this deck this is the route I'll be taking so I'll be able to test it out.

Urza deck usually runs eye of vecna instead of howling mine, any reason to run mine instead? How bout dualcaster twinflame combo, seems compact enough.

We are producing so much green mana with the artifacts, why not go for Tooth and Nail entwined and win with something like: Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Zealous Conscripts / Great Oak Guardian / Hyrax Tower Scout

So Kiki Combos... Why would you use Zealous conscripts when you have cheaper options? The way Combat Celebrant is worded it says it untaps all tapped creatures you control when you exert it. It doesn't specify the creature needs to be attacking. What about using Hyrax Tower Scout? It untaps a creature when it enters, you're in green so you have that option. And is the "Gain control of target permanent" better than Coercive Recruiter's ability "Whenever Coercive Recruiter or another Pirate enters the battlefield under your control, gain control of target creature until end of turn."? I mean, it seems to me I'd Pick Coercive Recruiter over Zealous Conscripts any day. Because then if I'm running Dockside I can infinitely copy Dockside so in case there is something that prevents me from attacking I can still combo off with infinite mana and casts from the top of my library. Its a corner case to be sure, but its just that little bit better imo. I mean, Imperial Recruiter can't get any of them since all of them have 3 or more power. But also Green isn't lacking in creature tutors. If I want to be mana efficient, Combat Celebrant or Hyrax Tower Scout seem to be the way to go, but if I want inevitability Coercive Recruiter seems to be a better choice. Sorry if this is a bit rambly, I Just think Zealous conscripts is a bit outclassed here.

I only have a doubt relative to the snoop combo: if you have infinite copies of conspicuous snoop thanks to Kiki jiki, how con you deal 1 damage for each goblin sacrificed? Mogg fanatic says “sacrifice mogg fanatic: Mogg fanatic deals 1 damage to target creature or player”, but conspicuous snoop don’t says that it becomes the card on top of your library, it says it “has all activated abilities of that card”, so you could win only if you have infinite Mogg fanatic, but you don’t! I’ll be happy to be denied because I’m super horny about this commander and would love to build it
