I must have played this over 1000 times and will probably play it another 1000 God willing. How beautiful! How true! But I wonder how someone so handsome in youth didn't maintain any of that in old age --??
Many women found him handsome at any age. He had five wives. He was 53 when he married his last wife. She was about 30 They were married for 16 years until Merle died at 79.
Merle Haggard is one of the greatest musicians of all time, even though he’s no longer with us. His music lives on. His Sons are also great musicians just like their Dad.
@@gregnormal55. Gosh, I have so many but my four most favorite areas: White Line Fever (think that’s the name - it’s about truck driving; Always wanting You; I’ve got a Yearning; and Do they ever think of me?
Hi Richard, how are you doing. I hope you are safe and in good health. I'm Patti from California, looking for a new friend and i saw your pic here. I hope you don't mind, thank you.
Merle always had the gift of words, and the voice to go with them. What a sad day it was when he passed on, but very grateful for the legacy of songs he left behind. Just love Merle and his great talent for writing. This was a great duet, just love both their voices ♥
@@brendaoquinn957 you have great taste of true country music. Not many of the legends left. But Alan Jackson and George strait are helping to keep it alive.
@@lydiaanderson7471 thank you sweetheart I am 74 year old and my husband is going through the way out of cancer he's coping but it's the music that gets us through nothing better than sitting with him and just listening to the words and emotions of the songs, so thank you with all of my heart. A rocker and blues fan, I discovered Merle in college and immediately recognized his gift. My first real foray into his catalogue was Best of the Best. Still a big fan 40+ years down the road.

There will NEVER be another Merle Haggard...Connie Smith, one of Dolly Parton’s favorite singers, PERFECTLY compliments Merle’s vocals. This duet between the two is absolutely precious. Too bad Country music doesn’t sound this good anymore.
Its why I no longer listen to country music. Im 68 and grew up with all the wonderful greats. What memories I have. Have seen both of them. Merle was my man crush when I was 16. Saw Connie sing in my church.
@@clu_tompkins You said why take credit for a song you did not write. I assume you are referrng to Merle Haggard. Looking at the writers named on the 1984 single, it shows 3 writers, as I listed.
I got to meet Merle in Townsville Australia when he was on tour here. He had Bonny Owens with him and it was the best concert that I have ever been to. GREAT!!
This is absolutely awesome to see 2 longtime friends of mine sing the wonderful words of Merle so wonderfully together as a duet. And love the comments before they began to sing. I'd bet Willie was in 7th heaven when he heard this song. Thanks for your fantastic work in posting this Johnbhoy 55.

Connie and Merle has got a voice that blends so beautiful and I really would love to have a cd that has Connie and Merle singing this song! He should have put Connie instead of Janie on this hit!

I agree with you that's one of the best lines ever - Every word of that song is memorable .. another is, "I can't seem to justify your leaving me and I'm bewildered at how it all came down"

As I am approaching 60, I agree with you,,,but for me, country music as been helping me with so many things for at least half of my life. There is just something special that comes out, not only in the lyrics, but with the steel guitar and fiddles and the wonderful guitar licks. The tremendous vocals by so many gifted people didn't hurt things either... :)
M Norm Hamlet on the steel guitar. He is now 87 years old, and going strong. I know him, and he the sweetest man alive. Still tours with Mario Carboni..."The HonkyTonk Rebels"

IM SO SORRY TO SAY . BEAUTIFUL CONNIE PASSED AWAY ABOUT ONE MINTH AGO. POOR MARTY BLESS THIS MAN /! SUCH A LOVING COUPLE AND THEIR LIVE SHINED SO BRIGHTLY . NEVER A MORE BEAUTIFUL COUPLE IN COUNTRY MUSIC ! LOVE THEM BOTH ! SHE WAS SND IS MARTYS MUSE !
Years ago in Pittsburghs Civic Arena,a large group of Country Stars put on a great show. While Connie was singing, the sound system quit. She didn't miss a beat, just cranked it up and reached every ear in the place.I fell in love again!
Best concert I ever went to Merle and his son and only man. I ever asked another graph from is Merle Hager and I met some of the best Henry Fonda Oliver. I traveled with the circus so Michael Landon. You name it but Merle Haggard is the only one I ever asked an article from and it was the most beautiful thing. And let's see 19. 9192 Spokane raceway. That was the horse races. And you gotta chicken dinner with it and you gotta place a $4 bet with this man. They just kept playing. It was a good 6 hour concert of just him and his son and his band singing. It was absolutely magnificent and things weren't how they are today. But you could look to your left and there would be bikers. You look to your right and there'd be you name it. Black white red yellow it didn't matter, it did not matter. And it was beautiful. There were little kids running around and then sleeping parents here. Wrap your blanket and set down in the middle there. And I got to enjoy this show and it was the best my goodness, and I have everyone of his songs. And it never fails that I cry dead every one of them. Willie, I love you too, Chris. Help saying enough about him. But will you got me through some not willia? Merrell, excuse me, murrol got me through some very hard times as did all of embed that comes from an old lady and if you can remember back then, if you're anybody out there really doesn't matter. Best most. Dedicated to his fans i've ever seen and i've been to a lot of concert
Ms Kathleen he lets you know he’s been there done that in his music. Country Music lost and icon when he passed. Too many of the true country artist have left this life much too soon.
How could you not be mezmerized by Merle Haggard I have always appreciated his music as a little. As a grown female I am IN LOVE the music this HERO sings about will find it's way thru generations
My husband and I saw Merle and Connie at a concert in Macon,GA Back in 1970-71. She had on a beautiful green knee length green dress. It was a wonderful time for my husband and I. And that’s the only concert I’ve ever been to.
I miss Merle there will never be another ever close to him. Common man song writer. I've listened to him for 60 years now. I miss him. He his teaching the angels how to sing.
